Self-Monitoring With Coping Skills and Lifestyle Education for Hypertension Control in Primary Care.

Self-monitoring with support, lifestyle modifications, and emotion management improves blood pressure (BP). Patients with hypertension need continual support to modify behaviors, but time pressures limit lifestyle education in primary care settings. Using mixed methods, we aimed to study the feasibility and acceptability of an innovative 6-week program that combined self-monitoring with coping skills and lifestyle education for patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Patients with uncontrolled hypertension interested in lifestyle modifications before intensifying medications were enrolled fro

Randomized controlled trial of an Internet-of-Medical-Things device for patient-guided anorectal biofeedback therapy.

Biofeedback therapy is useful for treatment of functional defecation disorders but is not widely available and is labor intensive. We developed an Internet-of-Medical-Things (IoMT) device, enabling self-guided biofeedback therapy. This study assesses the safety and efficacy of self-guided biofeedback therapy using the IoMT device in comparison to standard operator-led therapy. Patients experiencing urge or seepage fecal incontinence (≥1 episode/week) were randomly assigned to either our IoMT system or to the conventional anorectal manometry-based therapy. Both interventions comprised six weekl

A Psychosocial Support Program for Young Adult Childhood Cancer Survivors in Austria: a Qualitative Evaluation Study.

Many adolescents and young adult (AYAs) childhood cancer survivors face disease- or therapy-related late-effects, which limit their participation in various areas of daily life. AYAs are often left alone in our health care system, and many worry about their ability to cope with long-term sequelae, and some are even lost to follow-up. Therefore, in the present study, a targeted aftercare program was developed and evaluated with the goal of facilitating three important "life skills": (1) self-perception, (2) social interaction and conflict management, and (3) self-conscious communication of supp

Training of parental scaffolding in high-socio-economic status families: How do parents of full- and preterm-born toddlers benefit?

BACKGROUND: Preterm children have an increased risk regarding self-regulation development. Given the strong link between parenting behaviour (i.e., scaffolding and sensitivity) and children's self-regulation, parental training presents a promising way to counteract the negative consequences of preterm birth. AIMS: We explored the effectiveness of parental training by comparing a basic scaffolding training and a combined scaffolding/sensitivity training to an active treatment-control group (stress management). Basic and combined treatments should increase parents' domain-specific self-efficacy

Physical Therapy Targeting Autonomic and Dura Mater Function: SPINEPASS Randomized Clinical Trial Protocol.

IMPORTANCE: Persistent post-traumatic headache (PPTH) or concussion is a significant United States military problem, and pharmacological treatment is often ineffective. Headache is commonly migraine-like with associated autonomic nervous system (ANS) symptoms. Injury to the brain and neck likely co-occur during concussion, and recent research suggests resulting upper cervical hypermobility may trigger an ANS response and PPTH. A promising rehabilitation program (SPINE self-management techniques for Persistent headache After concuSSion [SPINEPASS]) has been developed, directed toward dysfunctio…

Fear of falling is associated with physical functioning, activity performance, and participation in individuals with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FoF) is a common concern in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Understanding whether and how FoF affects activities and participation is crucial for developing effective rehabilitation programs in individuals with MS. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between measures of FoF (degree of FoF and avoidance behavior due to FoF) and measures of activities and participation in ambulatory individuals with MS. We also aim to investigate whether avoidance behavior due to FoF is relevant beyond the effect of degree of FoF. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey-based d

Stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of a decision support tool for physical restraint use in intensive care units (ARBORea Study): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care units (ICUs) manage patients with or likely to have one or more life-threatening acute organ failures that might require the use of invasive supportive therapies. The use of physical restraint is frequent, with rates up to 50%, and usually initiated to maintain patient safety especially if the patient is agitated. Physical restraints have been associated with delirium, post-traumatic stress disorder and physical injuries while restricting patients' individual freedom. Moreover, the incidence of invasive therapeutic devices' self-removal by patients might not be dec

Effect of a continuous care model-based program on fatigue, self-efficacy, and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD), are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. One of the major challenges of this disease is chronic fatigue, which is considered one of the most common and debilitating non-motor symptoms. Increased fatigue in these patients reduces their self-efficacy, which directly correlates with decreased quality of life (QOL) and worsening motor and non-motor symptoms. Given the profound impact of PD on patients' daily lives, adopting effective approaches to improve their QOL is essential. The continuous care model (CCM), de

Cognition, Health, and Social Support of Formerly Homeless Older Adults in Permanent Supportive Housing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Formerly homeless older adults residing in Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) represent an invisible subsector of two distinct, yet related populations: the homeless population and the elderly population. Little research is focused on the complex health concerns facing this aging population within the homelessness response system. Of particular concern is the identification and support of individuals with cognitive impairment and co-occurring chronic conditions. We collaborated with a leading housing services provider to develop a systematic screening system for case
