Previously unrecognized similarities among metabolic responses to various maneuvers used to evoke anxiety in patients with panic disorder are described. On the basis of these observations, a new biological model is proposed for panic disorder, in which the primary defect--which is neuroendocrine rather than psychiatric--is operationally placed within the redox-regulating apparatus of the brain stem. This model is consistent with many clinical features of panic disorder and also provides a theoretical framework for further studies of the pathophysiology of this and related conditions (e.g., hyp

The effect of cervical sympathetic stimulation upon regional blood flows was investigated in albino rabbits during graded hemorrhagic hypotension and mild to moderate hypoxic hypoxia. Regional blood flows were determined using labelled microspheres. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) decreased in response to progressive hypotension and increased considerably during hypoxia (100-200%). Unilateral sympathetic stimulation did not change the ipsilateral cerebral flow responses under either condition. There was a greater tendency to autoregulate down to lower blood pressures in deep than in superficial cere

The effect of angiotensin II on the pressor response of the mesenteric vascular bed to periarterial adrenergic nerve stimulation (PNS) was compared between spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Angiotensin II (1-20 ng/ml) caused a marked potentiation of the vasoconstrictor response to PNS (8 Hz, 2 msec, for 30 sec) in a concentration-dependent manner without significantly affecting the base-line perfusion pressure in either WKY or SHR. The facilitatory effect of angiotensin II was significantly greater in SHR than in WKY preparations. The effective con

In connection with two observations of suprasacral complete spinal cord patients showing a clear sublesional spasticity and paradoxically and inactive and unreactive detrusor, the authors discuss the mechanisms that are usually considered: vesical distension, sacral peripheric neurogenic lesion, reflex inhibition of the detrusor of somatic origin. They express the hypothesis of an inhibition hyper-reflex of sympathetic origin, reversible under phenoxybenzamine treatment, consider the urodynamic evaluation and the therapeutic treatment and compare this type of neurogenic vesical dysfunction to

1. The changes in cardiac output and mean right atrial pressure (R.A.P.) evoked by stimulation of the cardiac autonomic nerves were investigated in cats under chloralose anaesthesia, with unopened chests and spontaneous respiration, and with active vascular reflexes. Cardiac output was measured by thermal dilution; the technique used was calibrated against the direct Fick method.2. The initial values of R.A.P. and output were varied by infusion of dextran-saline solution followed by withdrawal of blood. At positive values of R.A.P. withdrawal of blood caused a fall in R.A.P. with no change in

Physiological activation of the sympathetic adrenomedullary (SAM) axis following both thermal and non thermal stress was assessed by changes in serum norepinephrine, glucose and/or protein as well as indices of peripheral blood flow. The occurrence of elevated serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) did not reliably reflect SAM activation as might be predicted from pharmacological studies that document a beta adrenergic receptor mechanism in the parathyroid gland that mediates catecholamine stimulated release of PTH into the circulation. The beta agonist isoproterenol at 1 microgram/min for 60 min did

Plasmatic renin activity (PRA) was studied in patients receiving L-dopa, together with a decarboxylase inhibitor, at rest times and after periods of physical exertion. Although we can superimpose the results from unrelated Parkinson's disease patients on those of the control group, the results are inversed in stabilized patients (lowered PRA) and dyskinetic patients (increased PRA). There is a definite correlation between the increase in PRA and intensity of the dyskinesia. Dosage is the only other factor differentiating the two groups of Parkinsonians treated. The figures relative to arterial

Measured on isolated rat-stomach fundus strips, the isolated cervical sympathetic trunk, and on the superior cervical ganglion, chloroquine and mepacrine have parasympatholytic, spasmolytic, ganglionic blocking and local anaesthetic effects. On rising the doses these manifest themselves in a given sequence. On the basis of this fact it is concluded that the inhibition of gastric motility by chloroquine and mepacrine in the rat, is based on the parasympatholytic property of the drugs in question.

UNLABELLED: The mechanism of catecholamine (CA) release induced by transmural stimulation (TS) and the participation of acetylcholine (ACh) in this mechanism were studied using isotonic contraction of excised vas defernse of rats. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of bretylium (Br) on sympathetic activity was observed.
RESULTS: 1) The effects of various kinds of drugs on isotonic contractions induced by TS, exogenous ACh and exogenous noradrenaline (NA) were observed with the results shown in Table 1. The following has been concluded: (1) TS-induced contraction is due to stimulation of the e

Dopamine in the presence of cocaine, 5,6-dihydroxy-2-dimethylaminotetralin (M-7), apomorphine and N,N-dimethyldopamine produced dose dependent inhibition on the heart rate increase due to stimulation of the right cardioaccelerator postganglionic nerves. Inhibitory actions of these compounds were antagonized by bulbocapnine. Also bulbocapnine antagonized the blood pressure increase due to N,N-dimethyldopamine but did not antagonize the pressor response of dopamine.

1. A preparation of the taenia from the caecum of the guinea-pig has been used. Acetylcholine caused contraction and noradrenaline caused relaxation. When the perivascular nerves running to the taenia were stimulated, at low frequencies there was sometimes contraction and sometimes relaxation. At high frequencies there was always relaxation. In the presence of hyoscine there was relaxation at all frequencies, the relaxation increasing as the frequency rose up to 20/sec. The relaxation was not affected by the presence of hexamethonium, but was blocked by bretylium.2. When stimulation was applie
