Medial perirhinal cortex disambiguates confusable objects.

Our brain disambiguates the objects in our cluttered visual world seemingly effortlessly, enabling us to understand their significance and t … e fact that brain damage in human patients typically encompasses large portions of the anteromedial temporal lobe, such that the identification of individual substructures and precise neuroanatomical locus of the functional impairments has been difficult. We tested these competing accounts in patients with Alzheimer's disease with varying degrees of atrophy in …

Longitudinal trajectories of divergent cortical tau patterns in preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Approximately 10% of clinically unimpaired individuals with abnormal amyloid (A+; preclinical Alzheimer's disease) have "divergent" cortical tau pathology (A+TCortical+), defined as greater than expected tau in cortical regions relative to medial temporal lobe and/or cortical asymmetry on tau PET in addition to or instead of traditional medial temporal lobe tau burden. Although these A+TCortical+ individuals have subtle cognitive deficits at baseline, the longitudinal imaging and clinical outcomes are unknown. We aimed to characterize longitudinal trajectories of A+TCortical+ individuals compa…

The presymptomatic and early manifestations of semantic dementia.

People with semantic dementia (SD) or semantic variant primary progressive aphasia typically present with marked atrophy of the anterior temporal lobe, and thereafter progress more slowly than other forms of frontotemporal dementia. This suggests a prolonged prodromal phase with accumulation of neuropathology and minimal symptoms, about which little is known. To study early and presymptomatic SD, we first examine a well-characterized cohort of people with SD recruited from the Cambridge Centre for Frontotemporal Dementia. Five people with early SD had coincidental MRI prior to the onset of sym…

White matter abnormalities across different epilepsy syndromes in adults: an ENIGMA-Epilepsy study.

The epilepsies are commonly accompanied by widespread abnormalities in cerebral white matter. ENIGMA-Epilepsy is a large quantitative brain imaging consortium, aggregating data to investigate patterns of neuroimaging abnormalities in common epilepsy syndromes, including temporal lobe epilepsy, extratemporal epilepsy, and genetic generalized epilepsy. Our goal was to rank the most robust white matter microstructural differences across and within syndromes in a multicentre sample of adult epilepsy patients. Diffusion-weighted MRI data were analysed from 1069 healthy controls and 1249 patients: t…

Brain structural alterations in MDD patients with gastrointestinal symptoms: Evidence from the REST-meta-MDD project.

OBJECTIVE: While gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are very common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), few studies have investigated the neural basis behind these symptoms. In this study, we sought to elucidate the neural basis of GI symptoms in MDD patients by analyzing the changes in regional gray matter volume (GMV) and gray matter density (GMD) in brain structure. METHOD: Subjects were recruited from 13 clinical centers and categorized into three groups, each of which is based on the presence or absence of GI symptoms: the GI symptoms group (MDD patients with at least one GI sy

Arterial spin labeling provides a reliable neurobiological marker of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research on neurobiological markers of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been elusive. However, radionuclide studies of cerebral blood flow (CBF) have shown decreased blood flow (hypoperfusion) in the temporal lobes of individuals with ASD across ages and intelligence. This observation fits with current neuroscientific models that implicate temporal regions in social perception and social cognition. Arterial spin labeled perfusion MRI allows noninvasive quantification of regional CBF as part of a multimodal MRI protocol. This method is almost entirely absent from ASD research to d…

Transcranial direct current stimulation over posterior parietal cortex and temporoparietal junction improves contextual cueing.

Implicit contextual learning (ICL) refers to memory-guiding attention through spatial regularities that improve visual search performance, commonly known as contextual cueing. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is primarily associated with top-down, goal-directed (endogenous) attention, whereas the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is involved in bottom-up, stimulus-driven (exogenous) attention. In this study, we examined the role of these regions in ICL using anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS), hypothesizing that PPC stimulation would facilitate goal-directed attentional foc

The behavioral evidence of processing congruences and incongruences between Self- and Other-perspective-related representations during both perspective judgments.

Daily, we make visuospatial self-perspective judgments from our actual perspective (SPJ). However, social contexts often require imagining another viewpoint-visuospatial perspective-taking (VPT). VPT is costlier than SPJ, and gets even costlier in autism, schizophrenia, and aging. One explanation is interference from self-related representations. This interference may reflect a mechanism that processes various self- and other-related representations, supported by the temporoparietal junction (TPJ). Moreover, reportedly other-related representations also influence SPJ, though this remains debat

Report-modulated prefrontal activity and consistent posterior representations during conscious visual perception.

Understanding whether prefrontal cortex is necessary for conscious experience remains central to ongoing debates between global workspace and recurrent processing theories of consciousness. To dissociate neural processes underlying perceptual awareness from those related to report and access, we combined report and no-report visual masking paradigms with magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the spatiotemporal and network dynamics of visual awareness. Across both report and no-report conditions, early and sustained responses emerged in occipital and temporal cortices, beginning at ∼60-7

The brain computes dynamic facial movements for emotion categorization using a third pathway.

Emerging theories in cognitive neuroscience propose a third brain pathway dedicated to processing biological motion, alongside the established ventral and dorsal pathways. However, its role in computing dynamic social signals for behavior remains uncharted. Here, participants (N = 10) actively categorized dynamic facial expressions synthesized by a generative model and displayed on different face identities-as "happy," "surprise," "fear," "anger," "disgust," "sad"-while we recorded their MEG responses. Using representational interaction measures that link facial features with MEG activity and

Simultaneous intracranial recordings of interacting brains reveal neurocognitive dynamics of human cooperation.

Cooperative interactions profoundly shape individual and collective behaviors of social animals. Successful cooperation requires coordinated efforts by cooperators toward collective goals. However, the underlying behavioral dynamics and neuronal mechanisms within and between cooperating brains remain largely unknown. We recorded intracranial electrophysiological signals from human pairs engaged in a cooperation game. We show that teammate coordination and goal pursuit make distinct contributions to the behavioral cooperation dynamics. Increases and decreases in high-gamma activity in the tempo

Sensitive infant care tunes a frontotemporal interbrain network in adolescence.

Caregiving plays a critical role in children's cognitive, emotional, and psychological well-being. In the current longitudinal study, we investigated the enduring effects of early maternal behavior on processes of interbrain synchrony in adolescence. Mother-infant naturalistic interactions were filmed when infants were 3-4 months old and interactions were coded for maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness with the Coding Interactive Behavior Manual. In early adolescence (Mean = 12.30, SD = 1.25), mother-adolescent interbrain synchrony was measured using hyperscanning EEG during a naturalistic in

Neural attenuation: age-related dedifferentiation in the left occipitotemporal cortex for visual word processing.

The present study investigated the age-related neural basis of cognitive decline in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT)-a brain area that responds selectively to visual words processing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to estimate neural activity in this area, while young and old adults viewed words and line drawings. Our results demonstrated the existence of neural dedifferentiation of the left vOT in old adults during visual word processing. More specifically, this dedifferentiation was due to neural attenuation that is, decreased response to words rather than incre

Early reading skills and the ventral occipito-temporal cortex organization.

Learning to read impacts the way the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOT) reorganizes. The postulated underlying mechanism of neuronal recycling was recently revisited. Neuroimaging data showed that voxels weakly specialized for visual processing keep their initial category selectivity (i.e., object or face processing) while acquiring an additional and stronger responsivity to written words. Here, we examined a large and diverse group of six-year-olds prior to formal literacy training (N = 72) using various data analysis techniques (univariate, multivariate, rapid adaptation) and types of sti

Decoding the information structure underlying the neural representation of concepts.

The nature of the representational code underlying conceptual knowledge remains a major unsolved problem in cognitive neuroscience. We assessed the extent to which different representational systems contribute to the instantiation of lexical concepts in high-level, heteromodal cortical areas previously associated with semantic cognition. We found that lexical semantic information can be reliably decoded from a wide range of heteromodal cortical areas in the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex. In most of these areas, we found a striking advantage for experience-based representational struct

Establishing a role of the semantic control network in social cognitive processing: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies.

The contribution and neural basis of cognitive control is under-specified in many prominent models of socio-cognitive processing. Important outstanding questions include whether there are multiple, distinguishable systems underpinning control and whether control is ubiquitously or selectively engaged across different social behaviours and task demands. Recently, it has been proposed that the regulation of social behaviours could rely on brain regions specialised in the controlled retrieval of semantic information, namely the anterior inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal g

Temporo-parietal brain regions are involved in higher order object perception.

Lesions to posterior temporo-parietal brain regions are associated with deficits in perception of global, hierarchical shapes, but also with impairments in the processing of objects presented under demanding viewing conditions. Evidence from neuroimaging studies and lesion patterns observed in patients with simultanagnosia and agnosia for object orientation suggest similar brain regions to be involved in perception of global shapes and processing of objects in atypical ('non-canonical') orientation. In a localizer experiment, we identified individual temporo-parietal brain areas involved in gl
