[Long-term effects of neonatal medium-degree hyperbilirubinemia on brainstem evoked potentials].

Since neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (greater than 20 mg/100 ml) represents a risk factor for acoustic defects, we examined the effects of moderate hyperbilirubinemia less than 20 mg/100 ml) on the acoustic pathway maturation through the BAEPs technique. Twenty-three children who had suffered from moderate neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (5 FT, 18 PT) were tested at the end of their 1st year. No statistically significant differences were found between their response characteristics and those of a similarly aged control group. We conclude that a low-to-moderate degree of hyperbilirubinemia at birth sh

Osteogenesis imperfecta and associated hearing loss in five kindreds.

We examined audiometric data of 30 medically confirmed cases of osteogenesis imperfecta, evaluating pure tone threshold and impedance data to determine the prevalence, type, and degree of hearing loss in five kindreds. Nineteen of the 30 individuals evaluated had normal hearing bilaterally, while 11 had hearing losses of various types and degrees. The results of pure tone testing, tympanometry, and acoustic reflex measurements suggest no clearly established pattern of hearing loss in this population. However, the presence of air-bone gaps and absent acoustic reflexes during the first and secon

Profound deafness. Associated sensory and neural degeneration.

The cases of deafness presented here have been selected primarily to illustrate the degree to which the acoustic ganglion has degenerated in profound or total deafness. Examples of seven types of acquired diseases of the inner ear and one type of probable congenital degeneration of uncertain cause are given. The number of surviving ganglion cells in each 5-mm section of the cochlea has been expressed as a percentage of the normal average count corresponding to that section of the organ of Corti. The state of the acoustic ganglion has been correlated with that of the organ of Corti and the peri

[The diagnostic value of the Stepping Test of Unterberger (author's transl)].

Of the vestibulo-spinal reactions, the "stepping test" is considered to be the most important, especially for unilateral peripheral vestibular disturbances. Electronystagmography was performed on seven patients after transtemporal neurectomy of the vestibular nerve, 17 patients with a nearly compensated vesitbular defect after vestibular neuronitis, and seven patients after suboccipital removal of acoustic neuromas. These results were then compared to the spontaneous stepping test. The test could not be performed on six of the seven patients with the operated acoustic neuroma, and on three oth

[Effect of narcotics on impulse conduction in the afferent pathways of visceral nerves].

In tests set up on cats immobilized with pyraxolone and anatruxonium the effect of non-inhalation narcotics on the evoked potentials of the cortex and subcortical structures with visceral and also somatic, acoustic and photo-stimulation was studied. With stimuli of different modality sodium ethaminal was found to inhibit evoked potentials of the cerebral hemispheres, diencephalon and midbrain cortex. Hexabarbital sodium suppressed biopotentials in specific, associative and non- specific brain structures in the event of visceral and somatic stimulation. Viadril enhanced the amplitude of potenti

Quantum engineering of GaAs nanoribbons for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion.

Gallium arsenide (GaAs) nanoribbons are promising candidates for advanced thermoelectric applications due to their unique quantum confinement effects, low-dimensional electronic properties, and tunable vibrational characteristics. In this study, we employed a robust computational approach combining the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) formalism with density functional-based tight binding (DFTB) to investigate the electronic, phononic, and thermoelectric transport properties of GaAs nanoribbons. A distinct ≈40 meV acoustic-optical phonon gap is identified, which suppresses acoustic-optic

Thickness-Deformation Collaborative Bandgap Control of Deep-Subwavelength Metallic Kirigami Metasurfaces.

Three-dimensional Kirigami structures, as large-deformation deep-subwavelength phononic crystals (artificial periodic materials with structural feature sizes much smaller than the acoustic wavelength, enabling miniaturization of acoustic devices), exhibit significant application potential in metal-based acoustic regulation devices. However, the intrinsic coupling mechanism of bandgap regulation under the collaborative effect of thickness and deformation (including the interaction between stiffness anisotropy, modal hybridization, and Bragg scattering) remains insufficiently systematically eluc

Structured Light Music for Stress Adaptation: The BDNF/TrkB Signaling Axis Mediating Neuroplasticity and HPA Axis Regulation.

Background/Objectives: Chronic stress poses a major threat to animal health and welfare, yet current interventions are often invasive, poorly compliant, or lack long-term feasibility. This narrative review synthesizes preclinical mechanistic evidence from mammalian animal models to examine how structured auditory stimulation engages neurotrophic signaling. Structured light music-an auditory stimulus with defined acoustic parameters (e.g., tempo, intensity, and spectral frequency)-has emerged as a promising non-invasive strategy for promoting stress adaptation. However, the molecular mechanism

Vocal Outcomes After Cell-Based Outer Vocal Fold Implant in Porcine Bilateral Vocal Fold Resection.

OBJECTIVE: Cell-based outer vocal fold replacement (COVR) consists of human adipose-derived stem cells and is a potential treatment for severe vocal fold injury. Prior rabbit studies demonstrated enhanced wound healing and COVR's safety in pigs. Building on prior work defining pig-specific acoustic parameters, this study evaluates phonatory recovery and establishes quantitative voice assessment frameworks following bilateral cordectomy and COVR implantation in a large animal model. METHODS: COVR implantation was performed in eight Yucatan mini-pigs after bilateral vocal fold resection. Functi

Windy events detection in big bioacoustics datasets using a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network.

Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which involves using autonomous record units for studying wildlife behaviour and distribution, often requ … a relative increment of >28 %. Our study demonstrates the promising application of YAMNet in the bioacoustics and ecoacoustics fields, addressing the need for wind-noise-free acoustic data. We released an open-access code that, combined with the efficiency and peak performance of YAMNet, can be used on standard laptops for a broad user base.

Chronic short sleep duration lengthens reaction time, but the deficit is not associated with motor preparation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between chronic sleep duration and reaction time performance and motor preparation during a simple reaction time task with a startling acoustic stimulus in adults. This cross-sectional study included self-reported short sleepers (n = 25, ≤ 6 hr per night) and adequate sleepers (n = 25, ≥ 7.5 hr per night) who performed a simple reaction time task requiring a targeted ballistic wrist extension in response to either a control-tone (80 dB) or a startling acoustic stimulus (120 dB). Outcome measures included reaction times for each stimu

[Experimental study on high-frequency subharmonic scattering characteristics of ultrasound contrast agent microbubbles under low ambient pressure].

Correlation between nonlinear subharmonic scattering of ultrasound contrast agent microbubbles and ambient pressure is expected to be used for local brain tissue pressure monitoring. Although high-frequency ultrasound has achieved high-resolution imaging of intracranial microvessels, the research on high-frequency subharmonic scattering characteristics of microbubbles is insufficient at present, which restricts the research progress of estimating local brain tissue pressure based on high-frequency subharmonic scattering of microbubbles. Therefore, under the excitation of 10 MHz high-frequency

Ultrasound as a stimulus for musculoskeletal disorders.

Ultrasound is an inaudible form of acoustic sound wave at 20 kHz or above that is widely used in the medical field with applications including medical imaging and therapeutic stimulation. In therapeutic ultrasound, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is the most widely used and studied form that generally uses acoustic waves at an intensity of 30 mW/cm2, with 200 ms pulses and 1.5 MHz. In orthopaedic applications, it is used as a biophysical stimulus for musculoskeletal tissue repair to enhance tissue regeneration. LIPUS has been shown to enhance fracture healing by shortening the time to

Seizures and proto-oncogene expression of fos in the brain of adult genetically epilepsy-prone rats.

The mechanisms and brain circuitry that render genetically epilepsy-prone rats (GEPRs) susceptible to acoustically induced seizures are not completely known. The present study explores the neuroanatomy of acoustically induced seizures by immunohistochemical analysis of the proto-oncoprotein fos after intense acoustic stimulation (AS) with and without seizures. Acoustic stimulation induced tonic convulsions in GEPR-9s, but not in control rats. Locations of brain nuclei showing fos-like immunoreactive (FLI) neurons following AS with and without seizures were mapped. Semiquantitative methods were
