UNLABELLED: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an important condition that may progress to Alzheimer disease (AD) or other types of dementia. If MCI can be detected early, timely interventions may be implemented. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on neuropsychological tests and imaging studies but have limitations in terms of efficiency and accessibility. Therefore, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based deep learning approaches represent promising developments that may offer new frameworks for the early diagnosis of MCI.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a long short-term memory (LSTM)-base

Alzheimer's disease progresses heterogeneously across diverse cohorts, yet current predictive models fail to capture this complexity while remaining clinically interpretable. Here we present a multi-dimensional attention framework that simultaneously captures both temporal dynamics and biomarker importance to predict disease progression across three fundamentally different populations: the general late-onset population using the Alzheimer's Disease Prediction Of Longitudinal Evolution (TADPOLE) dataset (N=1669), cases with Down Syndrome-associated Alzheimer's disease using the Alzheimer's Biom

Social isolation and loneliness can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic social isolation on the cognitive functions and structural-functional state of the brain in middle-aged rats. Ten-month-old male spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), Wistar-Kyoto (WKY), and Wistar rats were housed individually for 15 weeks, while the control animals of respective strains were housed in groups. After 13 weeks, all the rats were trained to complete a spatial task in a Barnes maze. After the behavi

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a major global public health concern, with chronic infection affecting physical, psychological, social and work functioning, often leading to depression, anxiety, and stress. However, tailored online psychological interventions remain limited. This pilot randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of a culturally-adapted four-week mobile cognitive-behavioral intervention for reducing depression, anxiety, and stress levels among individuals with HBV in China. Thirty-seven HBV-positive participants (age 18-65) with moderate

Adolescence is a sensitive period characterized by significant neurocognitive development, with important implications for learning and decision-making. Working memory and reinforcement learning are essential for decision making and real-life dynamic adaptation to the environment and are often affected in individuals with anxiety and depression. Using a cognitive computational approach, we investigated associations between working memory, reinforcement learning, age, and symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression in 193 adolescents aged 12-24 years. Participants completed the Reinforcement

Quantifying structural brain changes is critical for diagnosing and monitoring neurodegenerative diseases. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the silver standard, limited accessibility and cost hamper routine use. We developed a deep learning-based framework using the nnU-Net for brain segmentation using computed tomography (CT) to assess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume changes, as an indirect marker of tissue loss, and evaluated its utility across Alzheimer's disease (AD) stages and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) subtypes. We included 2357 participants: cognitively unimpaired (CU, n

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that requires early diagnosis for effective management. However, issues with currently available diagnostic biomarkers preclude early diagnosis, necessitating the development of alternative biomarkers and methods, such as blood-based diagnostics. We propose c-Triadem (constrained triple-input Alzheimer's disease model), a novel deep neural network to identify potential blood-based biomarkers for AD and predict mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD with high accuracy. The model utilizes genotyping data, gene expression data, and clinical

Background/Objectives: Neurological and psychiatric disorders share overlapping mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurotransmitter imbalance. In this context, multitarget natural molecules have gained attention. 1-nitro-2-phenylethane (1N2PE), a major constituent of Aniba canelilla essential oil, is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinesterase effects, yet its neuropharmacological profile remains poorly understood. Methods: This study integrated in silico predictions and in vivo behavioral assays to characterize 1N2PE. Results: Pharmacokinetic

OBJECTIVE: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a recognized precursor to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), presenting a significant risk of progression. Early detection and intervention in MCI can potentially slow disease advancement, offering substantial clinical benefits. This study employed radiomics and machine learning methodologies to distinguish between MCI and Normal Cognition (NC) groups.
METHODS: The study included 172 MCI patients and 183 healthy controls from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, all of whom had 3D-T1 weighted MRI structural images. The cerebella

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department (ED) screening for cognitive impairment (CI) is crucial for early intervention, yet guidance on dementia screening protocols remains limited. Our objective was to assess the concordance between the Ascertain Dementia 8 (AD8) tool, a brief screening tool for CI, administered to ED patients and their informants.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of dyads, including patients ≥65 years without a diagnosis of dementia seeking care in the ED and their informants (e.g., family, friend with close contact). Trained research assistants used the 4

Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions of sounds, syllables, words or phrases, stretched sounds or silent pauses in which the person is unable to produce sounds and sound transitions. Treatment success is the highest if stuttering is treated before the age of 6 years, before it develops into "persistent" stuttering. Stuttering treatment programs that focus directly on the speech of the child, like the Lidcombe Program, have shown to be effective in this age group. Mini-KIDS is also a treatment that focuses directly on the speech of t

OBJECTIVE: The conventional methods for interpreting tau PET imaging in Alzheimer's disease (AD), including visual assessment and semi-quantitative analysis of fixed hallmark regions, are insensitive to detect individual small lesions because of the spatiotemporal neuropathology's heterogeneity. In this study, we proposed a latent feature-enhanced generative adversarial network model for the automatic extraction of individual brain tau deposition regions.
METHODS: The latent feature-enhanced generative adversarial network we propose can learn the distribution characteristics of tau PET images

Long-coronavirus disease (COVID) is an ill-defined set of symptoms persisting in patients following infection with COVID-19 that range from any combination of persistent breathing difficulties to anosmia, impaired attention, memory, fatigue, or pain. Recently, noninvasive transcutaneous electrical brain stimulation techniques have been showing early signs of success in addressing some of these complaints. We postulate that the use of a stimulation technique with transcranial magnetic stimulation may also similarly be effective. A 36-year-old male suffering from symptoms of dyspnea, anosmia, an

Car driving is supported by perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills trained through continuous daily practice. One of the skills that characterize experienced drivers is to detect changes in the driving environment and then flexibly switch their driving modes in response to the changes. Previous functional neuroimaging studies on motor control investigated the mechanisms underlying behaviors adaptive to changes in control properties or parameters of experimental devices such as a computer mouse or a joystick. The switching of multiple internal models mainly engages adaptive behaviors and under

BackgroundCognitive impairment is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that increases in risk and severity as the disease progresses. An accurate prediction of the risk of progression from the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage to the dementia (PDD) stage is an unmet clinical need.MethodsWe investigated the use of a supervised learning algorithm called the support vector machine (SVM) to retrospectively stratify patients on the basis of brain fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) scans. Of 43 patients with PD-MCI according to the baseline scan, 23 progressed to PDD within a 5-year period

Over the last decades, interest in transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has grown, as it might allow for causal investigations of the associations between cortical activity and cognition as well as to directly influence cognitive performance. The main objectives of the present work were to assess whether tES can enhance the acquisition and application of arithmetic abilities, and whether it enables a better assessment of underlying neurophysiological processes. To this end, the present, double-blind, sham-controlled study assessed the effects of six active stimulations (three tES protocol

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease without effective medications or supplemental treatments. Thus, predicting AD progression is crucial for clinical practice and medical research. Due to limited neuroimaging data, two-dimensional convolutional neural networks (2D CNNs) have been commonly adopted to differentiate among cognitively normal subjects (CN), people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD patients. Therefore, this paper proposes an ensemble learning (EL) architecture based on 2D CNNs, using a multi-model and multi-slice ensemble. First, the top 11 cor
