Shigella flexneri, the causative agent of bacillary dysentery, enters into epithelial cells by a macropinocytic process. IpaA, a Shigella protein secreted upon cell contact, binds to the focal adhesion protein vinculin and is required for efficient bacterial uptake. IpaA was shown here to bind with high affinity to the N-terminal residues 1-265 of vinculin. BACKGROUND: There is little agreement as to the secretory process of renin granules in juxtaglomerular granular cells (JG cells) of kidneys, although a large number of studies of the regulation of renin secretion have been reported.
METHODS: The structural correlation between the stimuli and the secretory process was examined in mouse JG cells on renal cortical slices incubated with the beta-adrenergic agonist, isoproterenol; the loop diuretic, furocemide; the Ca2+ chelator, EGTA; and the actin filament-disrupting agent, cytochalasin B.

The paper reviews the prognostic factors which influence the radiosensitivity of non-small cell lung cancer. The clonogenic cell numbers, hypoxic fraction, tumour cell kinetics and inherent radiosensitivity are considered. In the future the measurement of these factors may play an important role in decision making as to the best management for patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
