Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is now commonly used in emergency surgery to confirm the site of injury and observe the thoracic cavity, especially in cases of chest trauma with stable vital signs. VATS was used in all 33 chest trauma surgeries performed at our department from October 2009 to July 2023. The common injury mechanisms were traffic trauma and falls, but there were also cases of trauma from a bullhorn, heavy machinery and farm equipment, and penetrating injury. The common surgical procedures were treatment of rib fractures and pulmonary suture or partial lung resection,

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is an ideal treatment for glenohumeral dysfunction due to cuff tear arthropathy. As the number of patients treated with reverse shoulder arthroplasty is increasing, the incidence of complications after this procedure also is increasing. The rate of complications in reverse shoulder arthroplasty was reported to be 15%-24%. Recently, the following complications have been reported in order of frequency: periprosthetic infection, dislocation, periprosthetic fracture, neurologic injury, scapular notching, acromion or scapular spine fracture, and aseptic loosening of pr

Traumatic lesions of the triradiate cartilage (TC) are a rare occurrence and at a high risk for premature closure with consequent acetabular dysplasia and subdislocation of the femoral epiphysis. Based on their experience (5 cases: 2 type II and 3 type V according to the Salter-Harris classification system) and on the literature, the authors affirm that the most significant prognostic factors of this acetabular dysplasia are the age of the patient (under 10 years) and the type of lesion (Salter-Harris type V). After emphasizing how difficult it is to make a diagnosis (which is often made later

A 20-year-old male incurred a vertex injury of the skull, disruption of the transverse ligament of the atlas, and a Jefferson fracture--lateral displacement of the lateral masses of the atlas in relation to the lateral margins of the second cervical vertebra. The combination of Jefferson fracture with transverse ligament disruption was not appreciated initially (or even late) because of the head injury. The hospital course was complicated by the patient's initial unconsciousness and restlessness caused by associated intracranial injury. Roentgenograms in all views of the cervical spine were es

Approximately 4.1% of all fractures in the elderly involve the elbow. Most elbow injuries in geriatric patients occur as the result of low-energy mechanisms such as falls from standing height. Elbow injuries in elderly patients present complex challenges because of insufficient bone quality, comminution, articular fragmentation, and preexisting conditions, such as arthritis. Medical comorbidities and baseline level of function must be heavily considered in surgical decision making.

BACKGROUND: Diaphyseal-engaging stems are conventionally used in conversion total hip arthroplasty (cTHA) after prior intramedullary nailing (IMN) to bypass screw holes and previously instrumented meta-diaphyses. However, it remains unclear if cementless metaphyseal or standard cemented stems can also provide satisfactory fixation in this scenario. This study compared the early outcomes of cTHA using three femoral stem designs: metaphyseal cementless, diaphyseal cementless, and standard cemented.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 80 patients who underwent cTHA after prior IMN at a single aca

INTRODUCTION: Over 30% of temporary aircrew incapacitations are musculoskeletal, with 20% involving the shoulder. The purpose of this study was to analyze return to work (RTW) after shoulder surgery in an aviation-focused surgical practice serving a civilian commercial major airline's crew.
METHODS: This retrospective case series reviewed shoulder surgical procedures performed at a specialized orthopedic practice between 2023-2024, excluding second opinions, conservative treatments, and follow-up cases from other surgeries. Unrestricted and full RTW was defined as the days from surgery to the

Missed Monteggia fractures in children may cause pain, deformity, decreased range of motion, neurological symptoms, and late arthritis of the elbow. Numerous surgical techniques have been advocated to reconstruct missed Monteggia lesions. The purpose of the present study were first to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes after open reduction of the radial head and corrective osteotomy of the ulna, second to identify the factors associated with the preoperative radial notch/head appearance and the postoperative radiographic results. This study investigated the preoperative MRI presen

INTRODUCTION: After dorsal stabilisation of vertebral fractures by an internal fixateur the postoperative computed tomography is a standard procedure to control the positions of the pedicle screws, the success of the reposition, the clearance of the spinal canal and to plane an additive secondary ventral stabilisation. An intraoperative scan with a 3D image intensifier may clarify these questions directly after the implantation with the possibility of an immediate correction of the implants. The aim of this study was to find out the optimal point of time to perform an intraoperative 3D scan an

INTRODUCTION: Malunion is the most common and serious complications after fracture of the distal radius. Alterations of the normal biomechanics affect function of the wrist, which is associated with pain, disability and, in longer perspective, with arthrosis. Reestablishment of the normal anatomic relationships by corrective osteotomy is one of the most effective ways to prevent this scenario.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients, 19 women and 6 men with the mean age of 50 years with malunited fractures of the distal radius underwent corrective osteotomy. Operations were per

Accurate identification and evaluation of spinal column injuries in post-mortem settings are crucial for forensic investigations. While traditional autopsies have long been the gold standard, post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive and beneficial tool. This systematic review aims to compare the findings of PMCT scans with autopsies in cases of spinal column injuries. Out of 428 articles screened, 11 studies matched the inclusion criteria. PMCT was superior in visualizing fractures in the atlas, axis, and upper cervical spine compared to autopsies. Moreove

INTRODUCTION: Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) disruptions are rare, with posterior dislocations even less common. In pediatric patients, these injuries primarily manifest as medial clavicular physeal fractures. Posteriorly displaced SCJ injuries are of particular concern due to their potential involvement with mediastinal structures. Treatment options remain variable, with open or closed reduction favored in acute cases and conservative management considered in delayed presentations.
CASE REPORT: We present an 11-year-old male with a posteriorly displaced medial clavicular physeal fracture follo

PURPOSE: Preoperative virtual planning and osteosynthesis with patient-specific implants (PSIs) have become a quotidian approach to many maxillofacial elective surgery setups. When a process is well-organized, a similar approach can be harnessed to serve the needs of exact primary reconstructions, especially in midfacial trauma cases. PSI osteosynthesis of the mandible is, however, more challenging because a mirror technique of the facial sides is often unreliable due to inherent lack of symmetry, and movement of the mandible increases the risk of loosening of the osteosynthesis. The purpose o

Posterior wall components of acetabular fractures are challenging injuries to treat due to the frequency of comminution, marginal impaction and high contact forces of the femoral head on the posterior wall. A variety of fixation techniques for these components have been utilized including conventional buttress plating and free screws. The objective of this report is to describe the technical application of the DePuy Synthes 2.7mm nonlocking hindfoot and midfoot plate, a 5-hole implant (the "H-plate") (DePuy Synthes; Raynham, MA), in the surgical treatment of posterior wall fractures and to pre
