Research priorities to reduce the global burden of dementia by 2025.

At the First WHO Ministerial Conference on Global Action Against Dementia in March, 2015, 160 delegates, including representatives from 80 WHO Member States and four UN agencies, agreed on a call for action to reduce the global burden of dementia by fostering a collective effort to advance research. To drive this effort, we completed a globally representative research prioritisation exercise using an adapted version of the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative method. We elicited 863 research questions from 201 participants and consolidated these questions into 59 thematic research av

Reducing neuropsychiatric symptoms in persons with dementia and associated burden in family caregivers using tailored activities: Design and methods of a randomized clinical trial.

Among over 5million people in the USA with dementia, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are almost universal, occurring across disease etiology and stage. If untreated, NPS can lead to significant morbidity and mortality including increased cost, distress, depression, and faster disease progression, as well as heightened burden on families. With few pharmacological solutions, identifying nonpharmacologic strategies is critical. We describe a randomized clinical trial, the Dementia Behavior Study, to test the efficacy of an activity program to reduce significant existing NPS and associated caregiv

Does Breast Milk Affect Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Severity, the Need for Pharmacologic Therapy, and Length of Stay for Infants of Mothers on Opioid Maintenance Therapy During Pregnancy?

BACKGROUND: The United States is in an opioid crisis with abuse among women on the rise over the past 10 years. Infants of opioid-dependent mothers are at risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Neonatal abstinence syndrome can affect multiple systems and disrupt normal growth and development. It is for this reason that strategies to promote health such as breastfeeding need to be explored. This brief evaluates current evidence regarding breast milk and the impact it has on NAS. PURPOSE: The question guiding this brief is: "Does provision of breast milk reduce NAS withdrawal symptoms, de

The adult suicide-prone patient: a review of the medical literature and implications for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

PURPOSE: Suicide is the 11th most common cause of death among American adults. Some individuals who commit suicide may have been treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the days preceding the event. Because suicide often is preventable, in this report we review methods that are useful in identifying individuals at risk of imminent suicide and give suggestions for obtaining interventional assistance. METHODS: A Medline search using the key terms "suicide," "adult," and "oral surgery" was conducted. Articles selected were published in peer-reviewed journals. RESULTS: Individuals who have

Elimination of neglected diseases in latin america and the Caribbean: a mapping of selected diseases.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, around 195 million people live in poverty, a situation that increases the burden of some infectious diseases. Neglected diseases, in particular, are often restricted to poor, marginalized sections of the population. Tools exist to combat these diseases, making it imperative to work towards their elimination. In 2009, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) received a mandate to support the countries in the Region in eliminating neglected diseases and other poverty-related infections. The objective of this study is to analyze the presence of selected dise

Salt fortification with iodine: Sudan situation analysis.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) constitute a severe public health problem in Sudan. IDD affects children and women throughout life. More than 2 out of 10 school age children have goiter. The prevalence reaches 40% in some regions of the country. Several interventional measures were introduced to control the IDD problem. While the situation with regard to production and supply of iodized salt was thus deteriorating, an Emergency Food Security and Nutrition Assessment Survey (EFSNA) revealed that the prevalence of IDD among adult women, as reflected in the presence of visible goiter, was as hi

No effect of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (EPA and DHA) supplementation on depressed mood and cognitive function: a randomised controlled trial.

Low dietary intakes of the n-3 long-chain PUFA (LCPUFA) EPA and DHA are thought to be associated with increased risk for a variety of adverse outcomes, including some psychiatric disorders. Evidence from observational and intervention studies for a role of n-3 LCPUFA in depression is mixed, with some support for a benefit of EPA and/or DHA in major depressive illness. The present study was a double-blind randomised controlled trial that evaluated the effects of EPA+DHA supplementation (1.5 g/d) on mood and cognitive function in mild to moderately depressed individuals. Of 218 participants who

Pediatric endocrinologic recommendations, pediatric practice, and current pediatric training regarding care of children with diabetes.

Many pediatric diabetes patients are cared for by community-based pediatricians. Training for pediatricians in optimal diabetes care should be based on both the recommendations of pediatric endocrinologists regarding optimal care and the practices of general pediatricians. Pediatric endocrinologists, general pediatricians, and pediatric residency coordinators were surveyed to assess the consonance of current recommendations, practices, and training in pediatric diabetes care. Not surprisingly, pediatric endocrinologists recommended more subspecialty care than pediatricians reported practicing.

Self-management program versus usual care for community-dwelling older adults with multimorbidity: A pragmatic randomized controlled trial in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity, the co-existence of 2+ (or 3+) chronic diseases in an individual, is an increasingly common global phenomenon leading to reduced quality of life and functional status, and higher healthcare service use and mortality. There is an urgent need to develop and test new models of care that incorporate the components of multimorbidity interventions recommended by international organizations, including care coordination, interdisciplinary teams, and care plans developed with patients that are tailored to their needs and preferences. PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness
