Personality changes after Toscana virus (TOSV) encephalitis in a 49-year-old man: A case report.

Toscana virus (TOSV) infection may often cause symptomatic meningitides and encephalitides. These usually subside in few days and their sequelae do not last for more than few weeks. We here report the case of a 49-year-old man who developed encephalitis after being bitten by phlebotomi in a region near southern Tuscany, where TOSV is endemic, and who developed postencephalitic seizures and subsequently, persistent personality alterations, characterized by sexually dissolute behavior and aggressiveness. One year after infection, the patient needs a combination of an SSRI antidepressant and a mo

The history of the Laboratory of Pathology of the Cluj-Napoca Oncological Institute.

The Laboratory of Pathology of the actual "Professor Ion Chiricută" Oncological Institute of Cluj-Napoca, former "Iuliu Maniu" Institute for Cancer Study and Prophylaxis, had the privilege that in its framework carry on an important part of their activity professors Titu Vasiliu and Rubin Popa, who are forming, beside Victor Babeş, the golden trinity of the Romanian pathology. The Cancer Institute of Cluj, one of the first in the World, was founded in 1929, especially by the clear-sightedness and the efforts of Professor Iuliu Moldovan, the master of the modern Romanian school of hygiene. Reorganization of the human central nervous system.

The key strategies on which the discovery of the functional organization of the central nervous system (CNS) under physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions have been based included (1) our measurements of phase and frequency coordination between the firings of alpha- and gamma-motoneurons and secondary muscle spindle afferents in the human spinal cord, (2) knowledge on CNS reorganization derived upon the improvement of the functions of the lesioned CNS in our patients in the short-term memory and the long-term memory (reorganization), and (3) the dynamic pattern approach for re-learning rhy

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and associated factors among children and adolescents in Borama town, Somaliland: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by a persistent pattern of symptoms, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and poor performance in school. Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder further have a higher risk of anxiety and depression and increasing risky behaviors, such as substance use. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental d

Clarifying the relationship and analyzing the influential factors of bronchial asthma in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma is closely related to the occurrence of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, which can easily have adverse effects on children's learning and social interactions. Studies have shown that childhood asthma can increase the risk of ADHD and the core symptoms of ADHD. Compared with children with ADHD alone, children with asthma and ADHD are more likely to show high levels of hyperactivity, hyperactive-impulsive and other externalizing behaviors and anxiety in clinical practice and have more symptoms of somatization and emotional internalization.

Examining emotion regulation in binge-eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Inefficient mechanisms of emotional regulation appear essential in understanding the development and maintenance of binge-eating disorder (BED). Previous research focused mainly on a very limited emotion regulation strategies in BED, such as rumination, suppression, and positive reappraisal. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess a wider range of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. acceptance, refocusing on planning, positive refocusing, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, self-blame, other-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing), as well as associations betwee

Does atomoxetine improve executive function, inhibitory control, and hyperactivity? Results from a placebo-controlled trial using quantitative measurement technology.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of atomoxetine (ATX) on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-related symptoms assessed as standard variables of a computer-based continuous performance test (cb-CPT) combined with a motion-tracking (MT) device. This was a 2-arm, 8-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in patients with ADHD (6-12 years). Therapy with ATX started with 0.5 mg/kg per day for 1 week, followed by 7 weeks on the target dosage of 1.2 mg/kg per day. Primary outcomes were cb-CPT/MT standard scores after 8 weeks using mixed mod

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with obstructive sleep apnea: a treatment outcome study.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth edition (DSM-IV) criteria, may also have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it is unclear whether treating OSA has similar results as methylphenidate (MPH), a commonly used treatment for ADHD. METHODS: This study enrolled 66 school-age children, referred for and diagnosed with ADHD, and 20 healthy controls. Polysomnography (PSG) performed after ADHD diagnosis showed the presence of mild OSA. After otolaryngological evaluation, parents and

Analysis of heart rate variability five minutes before the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Various experimental and clinical observations suggest changes in sympathetic and vagal neural regulatory mechanisms play a critical role in altering cardiac electrical properties and favor the occurrence of arrhythmic events. There is limited information about the influences of the autonomic tone on the development of episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with no evidence of organic heart disease. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in sympatho-vagal balance 5 minutes before the onset of atrial fibrillation. METHODS: We evaluated 28 patients with no

Group dialectical behavior therapy skills training versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with ADHD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and executive dysfunction. Current treatment guidelines recommend a multimodal approach. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven effective for alleviating core symptoms, improving executive functioning, and reducing emotional comorbidities, with benefits sustained for up to one year. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an adaptation of CBT that integrates mindfulness and emotion regulation components, has also shown

Association of Cannabis Use During Adolescence With Neurodevelopment.

IMPORTANCE: Animal studies have shown that the adolescent brain is sensitive to disruptions in endocannabinoid signaling, resulting in altered neurodevelopment and lasting behavioral effects. However, few studies have investigated ties between cannabis use and adolescent brain development in humans. OBJECTIVE: To examine the degree to which magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-assessed cerebral cortical thickness development is associated with cannabis use in a longitudinal sample of adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were obtained from the community-based IMAGEN cohort study, c

Mapping risk of gambling disorder in older adults: a neural network approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling disorder (GD) in older adults remains insufficiently understood, despite growing concerns about gambling-related harm in older adulthood. Risk profiles and clinical presentations in this age group may differ from those typically described in younger or mixed-age samples, reflecting age-specific psychosocial contexts, health conditions, and life transitions. Traditional statistical approaches may be limited in their ability to model the complex, non-linear interplay among psychological, behavioral, and contextual factors. The present study aimed to apply neur

Investigation of phubbing behavior in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and cognitive disengagement syndrome: a case-control study in adolescent.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity beyond developmental expectations. Problematic technology engagement, including increased smartphone use, is frequently observed among adolescents with ADHD. Phubbing, a term combining 'phone' and 'snubbing,' refers to ignoring others in a social setting by focusing on one's smartphone rather than engaging in face-to-face interaction and has been linked to impaired interpersonal communication. Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome

Mismatch Negativity and P300 in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Comparative Event-Related Potential Study Using Healthy Siblings as Controls.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that involves attention, impulse control, and/or executive function difficulties. Knowledge of the neural bases underlying ADHD is essential for developing accurate diagnostic and treatment methods. This study assessed cognitive dysfunction in children with ADHD with respect to endophenotypic traits of event-related potentials (ERPs), specifically the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P300 components, and compared them to those of healthy siblings. These ERP components serve as neurophysiological m

Intra-spinal microstimulation may alleviate chronic pain after spinal cord injury.

Chronic pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) is a form of central neuropathic pain that is debilitating and often refractory to current pharmacological treatments. Neurostimulation pain therapies, such as epidural spinal cord stimulation, have only moderate success in reducing SCI pain. The pathogenesis of SCI pain may involve a state of central neuronal hyperexcitability, especially in the spinal cord dorsal horn, that develops after injury. We hypothesize that the neuronal structures near the spinal cord injury site may be an important pain generator, and intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) m
