Experiences of South African speech-language therapists providing telepractice during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative survey.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated that speech-language therapists (SLTs) make a radical change to provide services to their clients safely via telepractice. For many practitioners, telepractice was an unfamiliar mode of practice that had to be implemented under emergency conditions. Limited literature on SLTs' experiences of implementing telepractice in the Global South during this time is available. AIMS: To explore the experiences of South African SLTs (N = 45) who implemented telepractice services during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS & PROCEDURES: SLTs across the country wer…

Representation of patients with non-English language preferences in motor vehicle collision trauma and emergency medicine research.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with non-English language preferences (NELP) represent a growing proportion of the USA population. Prior studies demonstrate disparate health outcomes related to NELP status; however, this patient population is often excluded from medical research. There is a paucity of literature describing the impact of NELP status on trauma, specifically injury and outcomes related to vehicle occupants injured during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). The goal of this study was to evaluate the representation of patients with NELP in both emergency medicine and trauma literature. METHO…

22q13.33 duplication involving SHANK3 gene: a boy and his mother with "persistent" language and speech sound disorder.

Patients carrying 22q13.33 duplication present variable neurodevelopmental phenotype. Among these, patients with genetic alteration disrupting SHANK3 gene are very rare and they also present neurodevelopmental disorder such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. The real incidence is unknown because mild and variable phenotype could cause reduction in diagnosed cases. We describe the first case of 22q13.33 microduplication disrupting SHANK3 gene, inherited from mother to son, that presents a "persistent" language and speech sound disorder as main symptom without intellectual …

Developmental Language Disorder Is Associated With Slower Processing Across Domains: A Meta-Analysis of Time-Based Tasks.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental language disorder (DLD) often exhibit slower processing on time-based tasks in comparison with age-matched peers. Processing speed has been linked to various linguistic skills and might serve as a global indicator of individual differences in language abilities. Despite an extensive literature on processing speed in DLD, it remains unclear whether slower processing is domain general or restricted to linguistic and/or auditory tasks. METHOD: This meta-analysis used robust variance estimation to compare response/reaction times (RTs) of DLD and age-matched…

Language systems from lesion-symptom mapping in aphasia: A meta-analysis of voxel-based lesion mapping studies.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is one of the most common causes of post-stroke disabilities. As the symptoms and impact of post-stroke aphasia are heterogeneous, it is important to understand how topographical lesion heterogeneity in patients with aphasia is associated with different domains of language impairments. Here, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of neuroanatomical basis in post-stroke aphasia through coordinate based meta-analysis of voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping studies. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of lesion-symptom mapping studies in post-stroke aphasia. We obtained c…

Comparing Themes Extracted via Topic Modeling and Manual Content Analysis: Korean-Language Discussions of Dementia on Twitter.

We randomly examined Korean-language Tweets mentioning dementia/Alzheimer's disease (n= 12,413) posted from November 28 to December 9, 2020, without limiting geographical locations. We independently applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and qualitative content analysis to the texts of the Tweets. We compared the themes extracted by LDA topic modeling to those identified via manual coding methods. A total of 16 themes were detected from manual coding, with inter-rater reliability (Cohen's kappa) of 0.842. The proportions of the most prominent themes were: burdens of family ca…

Specific disruption of the ventral anterior temporo-frontal network reveals key implications for language comprehension and cognition.

Recent investigations have raised the question of the role of the anterior lateral temporal cortex in language processing (ventral language network). Here we present the language and overall cognitive performance of a rare male patient with chronic middle cerebral artery cerebrovascular accident with a well-documented lesion restricted to the anterior temporal cortex and its connections via the extreme capsule with the pars triangularis of the inferior frontal gyrus (i.e. Broca's region). The performance of this unique patient is compared with that of two chronic middle cerebral artery cerebro…

Auditory brainstem response deficits in learning disorders and developmental language disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although learning disorders (LD) and developmental language disorder (DLD) can be linked to overlapping psychological and behavioral deficits, such as phonological, morphological, orthographic, semantic, and syntactic deficits, as well as academic (e.g., reading) difficulties, they are currently separate diagnoses in the DSM-5 with explicit phenotypic differences. At a neural level, it is yet to be determined to what extent they have overlapping or distinct signatures. The identification of such neural markers/endophenotypes could be important for the development of physiological diagnostic to…

Atom Search Optimization with Deep Learning Enabled Arabic Sign Language Recognition for Speaking and Hearing Disability Persons.

Sign language has played a crucial role in the lives of impaired people having hearing and speaking disabilities. They can send messages via hand gesture movement. Arabic Sign Language (ASL) recognition is a very difficult task because of its high complexity and the increasing intraclass similarity. Sign language may be utilized for the communication of sentences, letters, or words using diverse signs of the hands. Such communication helps to bridge the communication gap between people with hearing impairment and other people and also makes it easy for people with hearing impairment to express…

L2 Enjoyment of English as a Foreign Language Students: Does Teacher Verbal and Non-verbal Immediacy Matter?

This review explored the investigations on the role of teacher immediacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' foreign language enjoyment. Earlier investigations have proved that teacher immediacy, such as posture, body language, vocal variety, gestures, and smile, can significantly affect learners' positive emotions like foreign language enjoyment. It means that teachers should try both to control the feelings of their learners and manage their feelings to enhance enjoyment among learners. Moreover, studies have shown that teacher immediacy is significantly related to learner motiv…

Speech-Language Pathologists' Views of Using Virtual Reality for Managing Cognitive-Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Using virtual reality (VR) to support rehabilitation is an emerging area of research that may offer people with communication disorders a stable and safe communication environment to practice their communication skills. There are currently no VR applications that have been designed to assess or treat cognitive-communication disorders (CCDs) following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Therefore, this study aimed to explore the views of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who work with people who have a TBI to generate ideas and considerations for using VR in rehabilitation for CCDs. VR res…
