Effect of hay nets on subluxations, pain-pressure thresholds, and cervical range of motion in the axial skeleton of adult horses.

Horses have become more intensively managed, including the use of hay nets to increase intake time and reduce hay waste, but their impact on health is not well known. The objectives were to compare changes in subluxations, range of motion, and the pain-pressure threshold in the axial skeleton of horses fed hay with (NET) or without (CON) hay nets. In September 2021, 13 adult horses were blocked by bodyweight (BW) and randomly assigned to the NET or CON treatments for one year. After one year, horses switched treatments and the trial concluded in September 2023. Horses were housed in dry lots w…

Stretchable and self-healing carboxymethyl cellulose/polyacrylic acid conductive hydrogels for monitoring human motions and electrophysiological signals.

Stretchable conductive hydrogels have attracted great attention in flexible electronics. Nevertheless, conductive hydrogels would suffer from an inevitable damage during use, significantly reducing the reliability and limiting the practicability. Herein, stretchable and self-healing conductive hydrogels are designed form carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and Fe3+, which are applied for monitoring human motions and electrophysiological signals. The plentiful H-bonding and metal coordination endow the conductive hydrogels with good mechanical (fracture strain: 917 %; fractur…

Association of joint hypermobility with range of cervical motion and its impact on the motor unit loss in patients with Hirayama disease.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Some patients with Hirayama disease (HD) may have generalized joint hypermobility (GJH), which may excessively increase cervical range of motion (ROM) and then worsen the HD. The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of GJH in HD patients and to analyze the effect of GJH on cervical ROM and the severity of HD. METHODS: The Beighton scoring system (≥4) was used to diagnose GJH in 84 HD patients. All patients underwent assessments of cervical-flexion/extension ROM; motor unit number estimation in bilateral abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscles; handgrip strengt…

Assessment of Hip Range of Motion Limitations in Cases with Low Back Pain Based on the Classified Movement System Impairment.

BACKGROUND: The hip joint's limitation causes lumbopelvic compensatory motions, accumulating tissue stress on the lumbar spines. It is essential and valuable to evaluate hip rotation range of motion (ROM) in different low back pain (LBP) classifications to understand them and plan the best exercise program. This study aimed to compare hip rotation ROM between subjects with and without LBP classified in movement system impairment (MSI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 100 subjects with LBP were classified into different MSI subgroups (mean age of 41.66 ± 7.82 years), and …

An In Vitro Biomechanical Analysis of Contralateral Sacroiliac Joint Motion Following Unilateral Sacroiliac Stabilization with and without Lumbosacral Fixation.

STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric biomechanics study. PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of unilateral sacroiliac joint (SIJ) fixation for fusion with/without L5-S1 fixation on contralateral SIJ range of motion (ROM). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: SIJ fusion raises concerns that unilateral SIJ stabilization for fusion may increase contralateral SIJ mobility, leading to accelerated SIJ degeneration. Also, prior lumbosacral fixation may lead to accelerated SIJ degeneration, due to adjacent level effects. SIJ fixation biomechanics have been evaluated, showing a reduced-ROM, but SIJ fixation effects o…

Biomechanical Analysis of Tibial Motion and ACL Graft Forces After ACLR With and Without LET at Varying Tibial Slopes.

BACKGROUND: Lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) is being performed more frequently with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) to decrease graft failure rates. The posterior tibial slope (PTS) affects ACL graft failure rates. The effect of ACLR + LET on tibial motion and graft forces with increasing PTS has not been elucidated. HYPOTHESIS: LET would decrease anterior tibial translation (ATT), tibial rotation, and ACL graft force versus ACLR alone with increasing tibial slope throughout knee range of motion. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Twelve fresh…

Total Wrist Arthroplasty as a Motion-Sparing Option for Distal Radius Malunion in a Patient of Advanced Age: A Case Report.

CASE: A 62-year-old woman presented with wrist pain secondary to a distal radius fracture malunion 4 months after a fall onto an outstretched hand. She was not an ideal candidate for osteotomy and bone graft because of the degree of displacement and osteoporosis, so after nonoperative treatment was unsuccessful, she was offered total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) or arthrodesis and opted for TWA. CONCLUSION: At 14-month follow-up, the patient reported significant improvement in her pain and function. The current generation of TWA implants may allow use in the management of symptomatic distal radiu
