Investigation of the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in fibromyalgia: A new quantitative approach to evaluate anxiety level in fibromyalgia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is identified by widespread musculoskeletal pain, sleep disturbance, nonrestorative sleep, fatigue, morning stiffness and anxiety. Anxiety is very common in Fibromyalgia and generally leads to a misdiagnosis. Self-rated Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and doctor-rated Hamilton Anxiety Inventory (HAM-A) are frequently used by specialists to determine anxiety that accompanies fibromyalgia. However, these semi-quantitative anxiety tests are still subjective as the tests are scored using doctor-rated or self-rated scales. METHOD: In this study, we investigated

Osteophyte detection for hand osteoarthritis identification in x-ray images using CNNs.

In this paper we describe a class of analog algorithms based on the concept of cellular neural networks (CNNs) for detecting osteoarthritis (OA) from x-ray images. The indicator of OA that we examine is the presence of bony spurs or osteophytes in the vicinity of the weight bearing joints of the fingers. Results on a series of hand x-ray images are shown to be promising.

A neural network for recognizing movement patterns during repetitive self-paced movements of the fingers in opposition to the thumb.

A data glove is a typical input device to control a virtual environment. At the same time it measures movements of wrist and fingers. The purposes of this investigation were to assess the ability of BrainMaker, a neural network, to recognize movement patterns during an opposition task that consisted of repetitive self-paced movements of the fingers in opposition to the thumb. The neural network contained 56 inputs, 3 hidden layers of 20 neurons, and one output. The 5th glove '95 (5DT), a commercial glove especially designed for virtual reality games, was used for finger motion capture. The tra

Review of MR image segmentation techniques using pattern recognition.

This paper has reviewed, with somewhat variable coverage, the nine MR image segmentation techniques itemized in Table II. A wide array of approaches have been discussed; each has its merits and drawbacks. We have also given pointers to other approaches not discussed in depth in this review. The methods reviewed fall roughly into four model groups: c-means, maximum likelihood, neural networks, and k-nearest neighbor rules. Both supervised and unsupervised schemes require human intervention to obtain clinically useful results in MR segmentation. Unsupervised techniques require somewhat less inte

Can artificial systems become conscious?-Recursive embodied closure as an integrative framework.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence, connectomics, and computational neuroscience increasingly raise the question of whether artificial systems-or even pure computer simulations-could become conscious. Contemporary theories emphasize embodiment, predictive processing, homeostatic regulation, and continuous interaction between cognition, body, and environment rather than isolated computation. We propose recursive embodied closure as an integrative framework linking embodied, predictive, functionalist, and dynamical approaches to consciousness. Rather than replacing existing theories, the

TransEBUS: The interpretation of endobronchial ultrasound image using hybrid transformer for differentiating malignant and benign mediastinal lesions.

The purpose of this study is to establish a deep learning automatic assistance diagnosis system for benign and malignant classification of mediastinal lesions in endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) images. EBUS images are in the form of video and contain multiple imaging modes. Different imaging modes and different frames can reflect the different characteristics of lesions. Compared with previous studies, the proposed model can efficiently extract and integrate the spatiotemporal relationships between different modes and does not require manual selection of representative frames. In recent years,

Improving residual vision by attentional cueing in patients with brain lesions.

Visual attention is crucial for almost all processes of visual perception, particularly when perception is difficult. We were interested in the effects of cueing spatial attention in patients with cerebral lesions who face difficulties in visual perception in areas of residual vision at the border of visual field defects. In 23 patients with visual field loss due to post-geniculate brain lesions, stimulus detection performance and reaction times were mapped with high-resolution computer-based perimetry. A cueing procedure using Gestalt completion to attract attention to areas of residual visio

piRNA-disease association prediction based on multi-channel graph variational autoencoder.

Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) is a type of non-coding small RNA that is highly expressed in mammalian testis. PiRNA has been implicated in various human diseases, but the experimental validation of piRNA-disease associations is costly and time-consuming. In this article, a novel computational method for predicting piRNA-disease associations using a multi-channel graph variational autoencoder (MC-GVAE) is proposed. This method integrates four types of similarity networks for piRNAs and diseases, which are derived from piRNA sequences, disease semantics, piRNA Gaussian Interaction Profile (GIP) k

Lightweight Ensemble Learning based on Post-Hoc Probability Fusion with Its Application to Lung CT Image Classification.

INTRODUCTION: Deep learning model fusion has become one of the most effective methods to improve the performance of ensemble learning frameworks. However, the optimization of critical parameters within ensemble learning models to improve prediction accuracy remains a challenging issue. This study proposes a lightweight ensemble learning model fusion method based on post-hoc weighted averaging of predicted probabilities. METHODS: By appropriately adjusting the fusion weight coefficient and the decision threshold, the optimal fusion strategy is investigated to improve performance metrics includ

Evaluating the Role of Order and Time Information for Classifying Sequences of Healthcare Events Derived from Claims Data.

Sequences of healthcare events from claims data are increasingly used for predictive modeling. Despite the rise in popularity of neural networks, the benefit of modeling event order and timing remains underexplored. We simulated patient trajectories using parameters estimated from claims data including 22,000 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases and 22,000 age and gender-matched controls. The simulation reproduced irregular event timing and condition-related activity that increased near an incident diagnosis. We compared three model families for population classification: frequency-based

Interpretable abstractions of artificial neural networks predict behavior and neural activity during human information gathering.

Humans and other animals are driven to acquire information about opportunities in their environments, yet how they evaluate what is worth learning remains unclear. Here we combine artificial neural networks with symbolic regression to extract an expressive yet interpretable model that specifies how human participants evaluate decision-relevant information during choice. The recovered function depends primarily on the relative evidence accumulated across options rather than absolute uncertainty about each, revealing that participants seek information symmetry across alternatives rather than min

Estimating Visceral Adiposity From Wrist-Worn Accelerometry.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a key marker of both metabolic health and habitual physical activity (PA). Excess VAT is highly correlated with type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. The mechanistic basis for this pathophysiology relates to overloading the liver with fatty acids. VAT is also a highly labile fat depot, with increased turnover stimulated by catecholamines during exercise. VAT can be measured with sophisticated imaging technologies, but can also be inferred directly from PA. We tested this relationship using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 20

Data-driven modeling of imported malaria in Morocco and the impact of population migration.

Malaria remains a very critical health-threatening issue worldwide, and increasingly, migration is viewed as a cause of re-emergence in malaria-free zones. This study proposes a data-driven, deterministic compartmental model that explicitly accounts for human immigration when modeling malaria transmission from humans to mosquito populations. The human host is categorized into susceptible, asymptomatic, infected, and recovered classes, while the vector population is stratified into susceptible and infected compartments. The paper presents a rigorous mathematical analysis to prove the positivity

Federated learning with swarm intelligence for efficient and secure medical image analysis.

Collaborative learning in healthcare faces challenges, including strict regulations and fragmented data. This research introduces a federated learning framework that employs swarm intelligence to augment communication and enhance the analysis of medical images. The method optimizes hyperparameters, selects features, and assigns aggregation weights to federated clients simultaneously by combining Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and the Firefly Algorithm (FA) with deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The framework was tested on three medical datasets: COVID-19 chest X-rays (5,856 images)

Artificial intelligence links CT images to pathologic features and survival outcomes of renal masses.

Treatment decisions for an incidental renal mass are mostly made with pathologic uncertainty. Improving the diagnosis of benign renal masses and distinguishing aggressive cancers from indolent ones is key to better treatment selection. We analyze 13261 pre-operative computed computed tomography (CT) volumes of 4557 patients. Two multi-phase convolutional neural networks are developed to predict the malignancy and aggressiveness of renal masses. The first diagnostic model designed to predict the malignancy of renal masses achieves area under the curve (AUC) of 0.871 in the prospective test set.

Multimodal Freezing of Gait Detection: Analyzing the Benefits and Limitations of Physiological Data.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a debilitating symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), characterized by an absence or reduction in forward movement of the legs despite the intention to walk. Detecting FOG during free-living conditions presents significant challenges, particularly when using only inertial measurement unit (IMU) data, as it must be distinguished from voluntary stopping events that also feature reduced forward movement. Influences from stress and anxiety, measurable through galvanic skin response (GSR) and electrocardiogram (ECG), may assist in distinguishing FOG from normal gait and stop

The More, the Better? Evaluating the Role of EEG Preprocessing for Deep Learning Applications.

The last decade has witnessed a notable surge in deep learning applications for electroencephalography (EEG) data analysis, showing promising improvements over conventional statistical techniques. However, deep learning models can underperform if trained with bad processed data. Preprocessing is crucial for EEG data analysis, yet there is no consensus on the optimal strategies in deep learning scenarios, leading to uncertainty about the extent of preprocessing required for optimal results. This study is the first to thoroughly investigate the effects of EEG preprocessing in deep learning appli
