A Passive Three Degree of Freedom Transtibial Prosthesis With Adjustable Coronal Compliance and Independent Toe Joint.

The effects of including lateral compliance or a toe joint in transtibial prostheses have been studied independently, showing the potential to improve the gait biomechanics in terms of stability, walking speed, and metabolic cost. However, both of these features are not commonly found in commercial prostheses despite their importance in human gait. In this work, we present a multi-axis passive transtibial prosthesis with three degrees of freedom (DOF). The prosthesis includes a compliant and adjustable coronal articulation using beam springs, an independent 3D-printed flexible forefoot as a to

Motility Improvement of Biomimetic Trachea Scaffold via Hybrid 3D-Bioprinting Technology.

A trachea has a structure capable of responding to various movements such as rotation of the neck and relaxation/contraction of the conduit due to the mucous membrane and cartilage tissue. However, current reported tubular implanting structures are difficult to impelement as replacements for original trachea movements. Therefore, in this study, we developed a new trachea implant with similar anatomical structure and mechanical properties to native tissue using 3D printing technology and evaluated its performance. A 250 µm-thick layer composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers was fabricated…

Additive Manufacturing for Personalized Skull Base Reconstruction in Endoscopic Transclival Surgery: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transnasal transclival intradural surgery is limited by a high postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of three-dimensional printing to create a personalized, rigid scaffold for clival reconstruction. METHODS: Two different types of clivectomy were performed in 5 specimens with the aid of neuronavigation, and 11 clival reconstructions were simulated. They were repaired with polylactide, three-dimensional-printed scaffolds that were manually designed in a computer-aided environment based either on the real or on the …

Functional and morphological correlates of developmental dyslexia: A multimodal investigation of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) is a region crucial for reading acquisition through selective tuning to printed words. Developmental dyslexia is a disorder of reading with underlying neurobiological bases often associated with atypical neural responses to printed words. Previous studies have discovered anomalous structural development and function of the vOT in individuals with dyslexia. However, it remains unclear if or how structural abnormalities relate to functional alterations. METHODS: In this study, we acquired structural, functional (words and faces p

Fabrication of 3D Models for Microtia Reconstruction Using Smartphone-Based Technology.

OBJECTIVE: Microtia reconstruction is technically challenging due to the intricate contours of the ear. It is common practice to use a two-dimensional tracing of the patient's normal ear as a template for the reconstruction of the affected side. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning and printing have expanded the ability to create surgical models preoperatively. This study aims to describe a simple and affordable process to fabricate patient-specific 3D ear models for use in the operating room. STUDY DESIGN: Applied basic research on a novel 3D optical scanning and fabric…

Anti-pronator components are essential to effectively alter lower-limb kinematics and kinetics in individuals with flexible flatfeet.

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses are commonly used to correct for foot alterations and especially address excessive foot pronation in individuals with flatfeet. In recent years, 3D printing has taken a key place in orthotic manufacturing processes as it offers more options and can be patient specific. Hence, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether stiffness of 3D printed foot orthoses and a newly designed rearfoot posting have an effect on lower limb kinematics and kinetics in individuals with flatfeet. METHODS: Nineteen patients with flexible flatfeet were provided two pairs of customized…

Peptide-based electrochemical biosensor for juvenile idiopathic arthritis detection.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a wide group of diseases, characterized by synovial inflammation and joint tissue damage. Due to the delay in the implementation of biomarkers into clinical practice and the association with severe sequels, there is an imperative need for new JIA diagnosis strategies. Electrochemical biosensors based on screen-printed electrodes and peptides are promising alternatives for molecular diagnosis. In this work, a novel biosensor for detecting juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) was developed based on the immobilization of the PRF+1 mimetic peptide, as recognit

3D pre-operative planning and patient-specific guides for re-directional peri-acetabular osteotomy in children and adolescents.

Surgical procedures to correct hip dysplasia associated with subluxation or dislocation of the femoral head are complex. The 3D geometric abnormalities of the acetabulum and proximal femur vary across patients. We, therefore, suggest a patient-specific surgical treatment involving computer-assisted 3D planning of the peri-acetabular osteotomies, taking into account the femoral head position; 3D printing of patient-specific guides for the cuts, repositioning, and fixation; and intra-operative application of the simulated displacements with their fixation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV.

Stem cell and biomaterials research in dental tissue engineering and regeneration.

This review summarizes approaches used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with a focus on dental applications. Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common diseases resulting in tissue loss. To replace or regenerate new tissues, various sources of stem cells have been identified such as somatic stem cells from teeth and peridontium. Advances in biomaterial sciences including microfabrication, self-assembled biomimetic peptides, and 3-dimensional printing hold great promise for whole-organ or partial tissue regeneration to replace teeth and periodontium.

[Patch-testing methods: additional specialised or additional series].

The tests in the European standard battery must occasionally be supplemented by specialised or additional batteries, particularly where the contact allergy is thought to be of occupational origin. These additional batteries cover all allergens associated with various professional activities (hairdressing, baking, dentistry, printing, etc.) and with different classes of materials and chemical products (glue, plastic, rubber...). These additional tests may also include personal items used by patients on a daily basis such as cosmetics, shoes, plants, textiles and so on.

Experimental Demonstration of Microwave Bladder Fullness Detection with 3-D Pelvic Model.

Non-invasive microwave (MW) bladder state detection has potential as a support tool for individuals with urinary incontinence, to alert when the bladder is full and provide information on bladder volume. In this work, an experimental demonstration of MW differentiation of full and empty bladder is investigated. A realistic and anatomically accurate model of the pelvic region was 3-D printed and filled with a homogeneous tissue-mimicking background. Two antennas placed on the skin, supported in place by the 3-D printed model, were used to measure S-parameters for both full and empty bladder mod
