Used with blood or serum, a new anti-K39 antibody immunochromatographic strip test (IT-Leish; DiaMed AG) proved sensitive (range, 99 to 100%) and specific (range, 95 to 100%) for the noninvasive serodiagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in India. Used with serum, the IT-Leish test and the existing Kalazar Detect test (InBios International, Inc.) yielded comparable results for symptomatic infection and identified apparent subclinical infection in 15 to 32% of healthy residents in a region where visceral leishmaniasis is highly endemic.

Hepatitis C and human fascioliasis are two of the most important public health problems locally and internationally. Each one has its own complications regarding spreading to man, clinical picture, laboratory and serologic diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Bats and their ectoparasites are associated with bacterial agents of unknown pathogenicity. We tested sera from 56 Eptesicus fuscus from Georgia against Borrelia hermsii, Orientia tsutsugamushi, Rickettsia conorii, and Rickettsia rickettsii. Two flocks of turkey breeders experienced an increased mortality and high culling rate in the first weeks of egg production. Neurologic illness associated with acute St. Louis encephalitis, West Nile, and Japanese encephalitis virus infection includes acute aseptic meningitis, encephalomyelitis, and a poliomyelitis-like syndrome. Few post-infectious immune-mediated neurologic events associated with flaviviral infection have been reported. The authors report on a woman with apparent post-infectious encephalomyelitis associated with recent St. Louis encephalitis virus infection, suggesting that neurologic illness from flaviviruses may also be seen in the post-infectious period following mild clinical illness.

A dipstick assay for the detection of brucella-specific immunoglobulin M antibodies was evaluated with 707 sera from 247 laboratory-confirmed brucellosis patients and 342 control sera from brucellosis-free individuals. These sera were collected from six different countries. The assay was found to be highly sensitive and specific. In addition, the test is easy to use and does not require specialized training or equipment, and the components are stable without a requirement for refrigeration. All of these factors make the test ideal for developing countries and rural settings.

We report two cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) associated with Crohn's disease (CD). The first case was a 60-year-old man with longstanding CD who next developed a seropositive, nodular RA. This patient also had bilateral sacroiliitis, but without positive HLA B27. The second was a 65-year-old female with a 15-year history of seropositive RA who presented secondarily a CD. Seronegative arthritides are a heterogeneous group of diseases that includes rheumatoid arthritis with negative rheumatoid factor. Between 1980 and 1984 we studied 38 patients with seronegative arthritis. Thirty of these patients were reassessed in 1994 after 9 to 20 years of evolution.
