The current article describes an image depicting an otorhinolaryngologic surgical intervention being performed on Kaiser Friedrich III. The image was captured by the lithography of an unknown artist and originates from a Cologne printing press. Kaiser Friedrich III was the penultimate German Kaiser and died June 15, 1888, in Potsdam, after ruling for only 99 days (the Year of the Three Kaisers). Management of Iatrogenic Bladder Injury due to Vascular Surgery: Case Report and Literature Review.

We report an unusual case of a 53-year-old male patient, previously undergone an extra-anatomic right-to-left iliofemoral bypass graft, who has developed gross hematuria after 4 months. The cystoscopic examination revealed a wall injury due to the presence of the graft crossing the bladder. Iatrogenic bladder injuries during vascular surgery are extremely rare. In the literature, only 11 cases of transvesical graft are reported. Choristomatous lacrimal gland tissue has been detected in many different sites of the ocular adnexa, but has never before been convincingly described in the submucosa of the lacrimal sac. A 77-year-old woman with epiphora had a biopsy of the sac wall preformed during a dacryocystorhinostomy that contained such a lacrimal choristoma. Leprosy is a rare disease and unfamiliar to many people. A 55-year-old woman was presented to our hospital complaining of nasal obstruction and anosmia. Nasal endoscopic examination revealed reddish-colored exophytic, nonulcerative masses in both nasal cavities. The present case is a 39-year-old man with mortal outcome from thymic carcinoid and Cushing's syndrome with high plasma ACTH. Three-day-old neonatal rats had their common peroneal nerve crushed 3 mm from the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle. At periodic intervals of 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 days following nerve injury the EDL muscles were removed, weighed, stained using the silver cholinesterase method and their muscle fibres counted. Comparison of histologic stains in the diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate commonly used histologic stains used to detect Pneumocystis, including Diff-Quik (DQ), Grocott's Gomori methenamine silver (GMS), Papanicolaou, and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). STUDY DESIGN: The study compared the ability of these stains to detect alveolar casts. RESULTS: Although there was a slightly higher average number of casts detected with DQ, the difference between this stain and GMS was not significant. Both Papanicolaou stain and H&E showed significantly lower averages. Some differences in H&E may be related to differences in preparation. CONCLUSION: Similar …

Occult congenital syphilis in macerated stillborn fetuses.

Five cases of macerated stillborn fetuses with congenital syphilis were studied. Despite severe maceration with visceral autolysis, spirochetes could be easily detected using Warthin-Starry stains. Clues that led to performing silver stains included the presence of an enlarged liver, spleen, chorioamnionitis, and nucleated red blood cells in villous capillaries. The Datura stramonium lectin recognizes with high affinity the disaccharide N-acetyllactosamine (Gal beta 1,4 GlcNAc). We have developed a highly specific cytochemical affinity technique in which an ovomucoid-gold complex serves as second step reagent for the visualization of this lectin bound to reactive sequences present in tissue sections.
