Raynaud's phenomenon associated with the use of pneumatically powered surgical instruments.

Five patients developed symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon and upper extremity paresthesias after 7-32 months of exposure to air-powered surgical instruments used for the harvest of bone for bone banks. Results of cold challenge plethysmography, nerve conduction studies, vibrotactile thresholds, and quantitative sensory testing were as follows: all patients had significant reproducible vasospasm with nondetectable finger systolic blood pressure (FSBP = 0) after local digital cooling; nerve conduction abnormalities included delayed median nerve sensory conduction (< 48 m/s) across 5 of 10 wrists;

Role of simian virus 40 gene A function in maintenance of transformation.

Mouse, hamster, and human cells were transformed at the permissive temperature by mutants from simian virus 40 (SV40) complementation group A in order to ascertain the role of the gene A function in transformation. The following parameters of transformation were monitored with the transformed cells under permissive and nonpermissive conditions: morphology; saturation density; colony formation on plastic, on cell monolayers, and in soft agar; uptake of hexose; and the expression of SV40 tumor (T) and surface (S) antigens. Cells transformed by the temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants exhibited the

Regionalization of Cutaneous Water Loss in Two European Lizards.

AbstractSkin resistance to evaporative water loss (EWL) is essential for terrestrial organisms to maintain water balance. In squamate reptiles, cutaneous EWL (CEWL) represents a significant fraction of total EWL. Recent studies found differences in CEWL among body regions of the same species, which may be due to region-dependent selection to modulate water loss or indirect selection on other skin functions such as resistance to abrasion. Regionalization might also be linked to scale size or number, as scales are a major component of a reptile's integument. We measured CEWL and scale morphology

A numerical study of non-Newtonian blood-based hybrid nanofluid flow over a stretching cylinder with Cattaneo-Christov heat flux and homogeneous heterogeneous reactions.

Non-Newtonian hybrid nanofluids have attracted considerable attention in biomedical and industrial thermal systems because of their superior heat transfer performance and complex transport characteristics. In particular, blood-based hybrid nanofluids containing copper (Cu) and alumina (Al₂O₃) nanoparticles offer promising applications in biomedical transport processes and advanced thermal management systems. However, the classical Fourier heat conduction model is often insufficient to accurately describe thermal relaxation effects and chemically reactive transport phenomena occurring in such c

A preliminary study of insect, bacterial, and fungal communities associated with Sus scrofa carrion in a tropical rainforest.

Carrion decomposition is an important component of the ecosystem and plays a significant ecological role in the food chain. During decomposition, arthropods and microorganisms help to decompose and recycle organic matter and nutrients. Although research has been conducted on microorganisms and arthropods associated with carrion across different biogeoclimatic ecoregions, no study has identified these communities from carrion placed under a tropical rainforest. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the arthropod, bacterial, and fungal communities associated with Sus scrofa Linnaeus. carrion

WS2/CuO-based non-enzymatic sensor for the detection of glucose in sweat.

BACKGROUND: Traditional blood glucose monitoring requires piercing the skin to obtain blood samples, which brings inconvenience and discomfort to diabetic patients. Sweat glucose content has been proven to be related to blood glucose concentration, so sweat glucose detection shows significant advantages in non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. The performance of enzyme-based glucose sensors is easily affected by external environments such as temperature and pH. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop non-enzymatic glucose sensors with good stability, low cost and high performance for sw

Severity-Dependent Peripheral Circulatory Responses to Neuroprosthetic Functional Electrical Stimulation in Chronic Stroke: A Four-Week Time Course Study.

Background and objective Chronic hemiplegia after stroke often results in disuse of the paretic limb, impaired peripheral circulation, and cold sensation. While functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been studied for motor recovery, its circulatory effects remain less explored. Neuroprosthetic FES (NP-FES), which delivers stimulation synchronized with voluntary electromyography (EMG) activity, may provide additional vascular benefits. This feasibility study aimed to evaluate whether NP-FES can induce observable changes in peripheral circulation in a day rehabilitation setting and whether

A Model of Acute Lung Injury Following Visceral Ischemia-Reperfusion by Supra-Coeliac Aortic Cross Clamping in Rats.

Open surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysms requires transient interruption of blood circulation, causing ischemia-reperfusion of downstream organs. Renal, mesenteric, and splanchnic arteries may be involved. No therapy has proven effective in preventing remote lung injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion after supra-coeliac aortic clamping. To study the pathophysiological pathways of acute lung injury and pharmacological treatments, an experimental model of aortic clamping has been developed in rats. Subcutaneous analgesia with Buprenorphine (0.05 mg/kg) is administered before the procedure. Ge
