Zoom-out attentional impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has long been associated with an inability to experience wholes without full attention to the constituent parts. A zoom-out attentional dysfunction might be partially responsible for this perceptual integration deficit in ASD. In the present study, the efficiency of attentional focusing mechanisms was investigated in children affected by ASD. We measured response latencies to a visual target onset displayed at three eccentricities from the fixation. Attentional resources were focused (zoom-in) or distributed (zoom-out) in the visual field presenting a small (cont

Categorical vs dimensional classifications of psychotic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Both categorical and dimensional methods appear relevant to classifying psychotic disorders; however, there is no clear consensus on the most appropriate categories and dimensions or on the best approach for constructing nosologic criteria that integrate these 2 methods. This review examines the evidence on specific dimensions and categories that would best characterize psychoses. METHOD: Entries in the MEDLINE database between 1980 and 2011 were searched for studies of the dimensional and/or categorical structure of psychosis. Studies were included if samples represented a spectru

Possible genetic and epigenetic links between human inner speech, schizophrenia and altruism.

Unique mental abilities have been crucial for evolutionary success of Homo sapiens and for the development of his complex social organization. However, these abilities have also become a target for mental disorders which often result in a reduced fitness and in conflicts between the individual and the conventions of society. To account for this evolutionary maladaptation, we advance a new concept: that of "mis-exaptation", derived from SJ Gould and E Vrba's concept of exaptation. Mis-exaptation is a characteristic which, although it may confer positive effects in one field of activity, may rea

Factors associated with departure from supported independent living programs for persons with serious mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: Supported housing is a viable model that offers independence and opportunity for community integration. However, previous studies have shown that not all residents can sustain long-term tenancy. This study examined the extent to which personal and housing characteristics predicted positive and negative departures from independent housing programs that provided support services to persons with serious mental illness. METHODS: The sample consisted of 237 persons participating in a supported independent living program in Philadelphia. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estim

Risk factors affecting school readiness in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: With advances in neonatal care, more children born prematurely are successfully reaching school age. It is unknown how many will be ready for school and what factors affect school readiness. Our objective was to assess readiness of children born prematurely for entry into public school, and determine risk factors associated with lack of school readiness in this population. METHODS: This was a single-center prospective cohort study. Follow- up data were collected for 135 of 167 (81%) surviving premature infants with RDS requiring surfactant-replacement therapy. The children were see

[Psychosocial behaviour and subjective experience specific to the course of study of medical students in their first and fifth years of study].

AIM: This study concerns the evaluation of study-related psychosocial risk factors and resources in medical students at the beginning and before the end of their course of studies. METHODS: Written questionnaires were filled out by medical students in Lübeck and Freiburg in their first and fifth years of study and analysed with three standard instruments (AVEM, SAM, F-Sozu). The response rate was 84.5% (n=435) in the first and 83.0% (n=351) in the fifth year of study. RESULTS: At the outset of their course of study, most of the students evinced behaviour and subjective experience patterns wh

[Outpatient cardiological rehabilitation--acceptance and conditions related to choice of setting].

In view of the increasing demands for more co-operation and integration among health care providers and "uninterrupted" care delivery processes increasing attention is being paid to establishing the determinants of a more flexible form of rehabilitation setting. Interest is focused particularly on determining at what stages and under what conditions specific choices of rehabilitation setting are made. In 1838 patients admitted consecutively to a cardiological rehabilitation clinic, the study investigated how many patients opted for outpatient rehabilitation and what factors influenced the pati

Evolving a model for integrated treatment in a residential setting for people with psychiatric and substance use disorders.

This paper discusses the implementation of a residential, integrated treatment program serving dually diagnosed people with histories of homelessness. Attention is focused on the program structure and how the program developed over time. Program modifications tended to relax program rules and embrace a motivational, stage-wise model using harm-reduction principles. Despite initial skepticism regarding these modifications, outcomes such as program retention, abstinence from substances, employment, and hospitalization improved.

Health and Social Support in the Aftermath of the Maui Wildfires.

IMPORTANCE: Climate-driven wildfires are increasing in frequency and severity, but their association with midterm and long-term health trajectories during the course of recovery remain poorly characterized, particularly in underserved populations. OBJECTIVE: To assess the midterm health outcomes of wildfire exposure, including respiratory and mental health, and evaluate the interaction of social support with these health burdens. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Maui Wildfire Exposure Study (MauiWES) is a community-based, cohort study that enrolled 1174 adults in 2024, 6 to 14 months a

Protocol for a realist evaluation of a COPD clinical pathway in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex and common condition with significant health, social, and economic burdens, especially due to frequent hospitalizations and comorbidities. International research shows current care for COPD is limited by delayed diagnosis, poor coordination among providers, and inconsistent adherence to treatment guidelines, which negatively impacts patient outcomes. Clinical pathways offer a promising solution by improving care coordination, aligning treatment with evidence-based guidelines, and enhancing both patient experiences and system efficiency;

Steps to an ecology of brain and cognition: From environmental effects to dynamic neurocognitive adaptation and resilience.

Environmental influences on brain and cognition are often studied as isolated influences, although their significance depends on multilevel integrated processes. This editorial introduces the Special Issue "Physical, Social and Economic Environmental Effects on Brain and Cognition" and develops an ecological account of neurocognitive adaptation. Contributions addressing socioeconomic deprivation, selective attention, school climate, prenatal maternal anxiety, acute psychosocial stress, aviation expertise, cultural and evolutionary constraints reveal processes operating across multiple timescal

Rethinking waste management: From "waste as resource" to "place as responsibility".

Biomimicry in waste management (WM) is commonly associated with closing material loops, improving resource efficiency, and treating waste as a resource. This approach is valuable, but it remains insufficient for assessing and governing how waste systems affect particular places, distribute environmental burdens, and connect responsible actors with the consequences of their decisions. To address this gap, the paper introduces "place as responsibility" as a complementary perspective for WM. Drawing on biomimicry as a heuristic perspective, together with resilience theory, niche construction theo

A process model of psychological acceptance in technology-based service innovation: a symbolic interactionism perspective.

As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in service systems, the diffusion of technology-based service innovations is often gradual and contested rather than automatic. Prior research has provided robust explanations for early-stage technology evaluation by treating adoption as a discrete decision or momentary experience. However, it provides limited insight into the longer-term process through which user acceptance gradually develops through ongoing use. Drawing on symbolic interactionism, this study reconceptualizes diffusion of technology-based service innovation as a process of

What does the internet mean to older adults? Evidence from research on health information behavior.

As the amount of health information available on the Internet continues to expand (such as digital health records, online consultation services, and support groups), people have more opportunities to enhance their daily well-being. Meanwhile, the Internet became integral to accessing health information and services during and after COVID-19. The evidence regarding the Internet's impact on improving the well-being of older adults, however, is mixed and inconsistent in academic research. To address these inconsistencies and better understand the Internet's role, this integrative review synthesiz

History as Therapy: A Novel Interdisciplinary Framework for Meaning-making and Well-being.

This paper introduces History Therapy (HT)-an interdisciplinary framework that integrates historical knowledge with psychological and philosophical approaches to meaning-making, well-being, and happiness. HT addresses the contemporary crisis of meaning, marked by mental health issues and feelings of emptiness among diverse populations, from young people facing existential uncertainty to adults distressed by serious medical diagnoses. HT provides a method for participants to explore and analyze the worldviews of people from other eras and civilizations and compare their attitudes and beliefs wi

Mental Health Disorders in End-Stage Kidney Disease: A Narrative Review of Clinical Considerations for Integrated Management.

INTRODUCTION: End stage kidney disease (ESKD) is associated with a high prevalence of depression and anxiety, arising from both biological factors and the psychosocial burden of chronic dialysis care. Approximately 25%-30% of dialysis patients experience clinically significant depressive symptoms when assessed by structured clinical interview, though reported prevalence varies widely by assessment method. These disorders negatively impact adherence, hospitalization rates, and mortality, with diagnostic challenges arising from overlapping uremic symptoms and reliance on self-report tools. Biolo

Resocialization as a lens to understanding workplace reentry transitions: An integrative conceptual review.

Workplace reentry affects millions of workers annually, with over 15 million Americans supported by the Family and Medical Leave Act in 2024 alone. Yet research remains fragmented across contexts and lacks theoretical coherence. This integrative conceptual review synthesizes 264 articles spanning diverse reentry contexts following career breaks or leaves of absence, including family, medical, military redeployment, unemployment, retirement, sabbaticals, expatriation, and incarceration. We develop a unified theoretical framework grounded in resocialization theory that addresses the unique compl

Payment integrity in government programs: Takeaways from incorporating the behavioral sciences in US federal evaluations.

A primary way the US federal government delivers public goods and services is via monetary payments. Ensuring that these payments are calculated accurately, delivered on time, and made to the correct recipients is important for government fiscal health. Inaccurate or delayed payments can weaken public trust in the government and undermine government accountability. In this article, we examine findings from a set of impact evaluations assessing interventions designed to improve payment integrity in US federal programs. The low-cost, evidence-based interventions draw on insights from the social
