Cell populations and episodic periodontal attachment loss in humans.

The purpose of the present study was to assess possible associations between episodic probing attachment loss and cell populations in the supracrestal connective tissue in humans. 10 systemically healthy adult patients with untreated advanced periodontitis were monitored during a period of 10 months. At baseline and every month thereafter, probing attachment levels were measured at 6 sites of every tooth using an electronic pressure sensitive probe and flexible stents. Corresponding contralateral sites were identified where 1 site had lost 2 mm or more attachment within the previous month (P),

DENTAL WEAR DUE TO ATTRITION AND ABRASION IN FREE-RANGING COATIS (NASUA NASUA) FROM SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL.

Coatis (Nasua nasua, Linnaeus, 1766), omnivorous mammals of the family Procyonidae of the order Carnivora, are ubiquitous in South America. Their diet varies seasonally, with a greater intake of invertebrates and small vertebrates during fruit-scarce periods. This study aimed to evaluate dental wear and dental formula variations in free-ranging coatis from Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, using the modified Triadan system. Coatis typically have 40-42 teeth, with a dental formula of 2 × (3/3 incisors, 1/1 canines, 4/4 premolars, 2/2-3 molars). They exhibit heterodont, brachydont, and anisognathic d

Impact of tongue-palate squeezing on texture perception, oral processing, and bolus properties in hydrocolloid-enriched mashed potato.

Texture critically drives food acceptance or rejection, with oral processing varying widely among individuals and influencing dynamic perception and bolus formation. Adaptive strategies like tongue-palate squeezing often replace chewing in populations with masticatory or swallowing challenges (e.g., tooth loss, sarcopenia, xerostomia), yet their impact on texture perception, muscle activity, and bolus properties remain poorly evaluated, particularly in comparison to traditional chewing. This study compared chewing versus squeezing effects on texture perception, processing parameters (oro-expos…

ROS-scavenging and antibacterial properties of polydopamine-coated, drug-loaded bovine serum albumin nanoparticles.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease driven by dysbiotic dental plaque and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. We aimed to develop a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive drug delivery system based on polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (NPs) for the controlled release of minocycline hydrochloride (MH) and to evaluate its synergistic antibacterial and antioxidant effects. METHODS: MH-loaded BSA NPs were prepared using a desolventization method followed by PDA coating. The resulting PDA@BSA NPs@MH were characterized in terms o…

In Vivo Assessment of SED: A Novel Biomechanical Indicator for Periodontal Tissue Remodeling in Clear Aligner Therapy.

PURPOSE: Orthodontic tooth movement fundamentally relies on force-driven remodeling of periodontal tissues. However, the therapeutic predictability of clear aligner therapy (CAT) remains limited, particularly in periodontal-compromised patients. This limitation stems from a critical gap between biomechanical loading and biological remodeling. This study innovatively adopts strain energy density (SED) as a biomechanical parameter to investigate the integrated biomechanical and biological responses of the periodontium to CAT. METHODS: We employed a cross-scale biomimetic framework that combined

Bone Regeneration Techniques for Dental Implant Placement Comparing the Effect of Graft Material on Bone Volume and Long-Term Graft Stability: A Systematic Review.

The natural physiological bone resorption following tooth loss often results in reduced bone volume to place dental implants in a restoratively driven position. Bone regeneration procedures such as guided bone regeneration (GBR), sinus augmentation (SA), and alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) have therefore been developed to promote new bone formation. These procedures utilize bone grafting materials of which there are four types, namely, autogenous, allograft, xenograft, and alloplastic grafts. However, there is still no consensus on which material is superior. This systematic review aimed to …

A Retrospective Cohort Study Comparing the Surgery-First and Orthodontic-First Protocols for Correcting Skeletal Class II Malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: The surgery-first approach (SFA) with mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy (MASO) is increasingly utilized to overcome the limitations of conventional preoperative orthodontic decompensation and achieve earlier correction of facial deformities in skeletal class II patients. However, it also caused greater surgical trauma, and there are currently insufficient clinical data available for analyzing the surgical outcome. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study to compare the skeletal stability, overall treatment duration, and incidence of major complications between the SFA and

Comparative analysis of TNF-α, TLR-2, and TLR-4 in GCF before and after periodontal therapy.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, primarily driven by a dysregulated host immune response to subgingival biofilms. Toll-like receptors (TLR-2 and TLR-4) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) are key mediators of immune signaling and tissue breakdown, making them potential biomarkers of periodontal disease activity. This prospective, non-randomized interventional study evaluated TLR-2, TLR-4, and TNF-α levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) for periodontal disease monitoring and assessed the effects of nons

Fibroblast-derived versican exacerbates periodontitis progression by regulating macrophage migration and inflammatory cytokine secretion.

OBJECTIVE: Versican (VCAN), a prominent extracellular matrix component upregulated in inflammatory diseases, demonstrates context-specific regulatory mechanisms. Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease leading to periodontal tissue destruction and tooth loss, the pathological role of it remains poorly defined. Our study aims to examine VCAN-mediated mechanisms in periodontitis. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of bulk RNA sequencing and single-cell RNA sequencing data to examine VCAN expression level and source in periodontitis. Functional and correlation analyses were use…

Addressing myelination disorders: Novel strategies using human 3D peripheral nerve model.

Peripheral myelination disorders encompass a variety of disorders that affect myelin sheaths in the peripheral nervous system. The Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, is one of the most prevalent among them. CMT stems from a wide range of genetic causes that disrupt the nerve conduction, leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, sensory loss, and motor function impairment. Historically, the study of these disorders has relied heavily on animal studies, owing to the challenges in accessing human cells. However, the advent of human induce

GBR assisted in situ Onlay bone grafting for the posterior mandible horizontal ridge augmentation: a case report and literature review.

The posterior mandible is the primary area for occlusal function. However, long-term tooth loss in the posterior mandible often leads to rapid absorption of both buccal and lingual trabecular bone plates and subsequent atrophy of the alveolar ridge. This ultimately results in horizontal bone deficiencies that complicate achieving an optimal three-dimensional placement for dental implants. Conventional techniques employed clinically for horizontal bone augmentation have limited efficacy, cause significant surgical trauma, and require extended treatment duration. Consequently, the selection of a…

Injectable pH-Responsive Hydrogel Adapted to Gingival Crevicular Fluid Microenvironment for Periodontitis Therapy.

Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that results in the progressive destruction of periodontal tissues and even tooth loss. Although scaling is commonly used in clinical treatment, it often fails to adequately solve the underlying inflammation. Rutin, a natural flavonoid with demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, shows therapeutic potential for periodontitis but suffers from hydrophobicity-induced poor bioavailability. Unlike conventional pH-responsive systems targeting acidic inflammation microenvironments, the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in progressing periodon…

Fixture design effects on posterior dental implant stability using finite element analysis (FEA): a systematic review.

Tooth loss is prevalent in the posterior region, and dental implants require optimized fixture design to ensure biomechanical stability, which is often the approach using finite element analysis (FEA). This systematic review, using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines in its writing, aimed to assess the influence of fixture design on posterior implant biomechanical stability, such as stress and strain, by FEA analysis. The study search used PubMed, ScienceDirect, MDPI, SpringerLink, and OpenAire databases to find studies that analyzed fixt…
