[Psychodynamics and therapy of trichotillomania].

After a short review of the literature, some aspects of the psychodynamics and therapy of trichotillomania with an adolescent patient are presented that up to now have not been described in great detail. Against the backdrop of previous fears of being abandoned, the patient feels threatened that while coping with the developmental tasks of sexuality and aggressiveness she will be dropped once again. This psychodynamically oriented therapy makes it possible for the patient to accept and verbalize the corresponding feelings in a relationship that gives a feeling of security. Therefore, the sympt

Factors associated with the development of psychiatric illness in children with early speech/language problems.

This paper reports on the correlates of psychiatric illness in children with speech and language disorders. Of 600 children selected from a community speech clinic, 50% were found to have diagnosable psychiatric disorders according to DSM-III criteria. These "psychiatrically ill" children were compared to the "psychiatrically well" children in the sample on a variety of developmental, socioeconomic, medical, and psychosocial factors. Although some differences were found between the well and ill children in other factors, the majority of the differences, and the most highly significant differen

The developmental consequence of different patterns of maltreatment.

From a longitudinal study of 267 high risk families, four different patterns of maltreatment were identified. The mothers have been tested, interviewed and observed in a number of situations starting during the last trimester of pregnancy and continuing at regularly scheduled intervals through the preschool period. The four maltreatment groups were: physical abuse; hostile/verbally abusive; psychologically unavailable; and neglecting. A control group of mothers who provided adequate care was selected from the remaining high risk sample. In an earlier follow-up, among the maltreated children a

Personality adjustment of children and adolescents with hypopituitarism.

Sixteen children and adolescents with extreme short stature secondary to hypopituitarism were compared to a matched group of physically healthy peers on a variety of psychological tests assessing general adjustment, body image, sex role development, sex-related fantasy, and reactions to frustration. With the exception of their reactions to frustrations, the psychological adjustment of children with hypopituitarism compared favorably with that of normal children. Children with hypopituitarism typically perceived less adaptive, mature solutions to frustrating situations than did peers of average

Cardiomyopathy in an Adolescent with McLeod Syndrome: Searching Beyond the Routine Assessment.

There are only few reports in the literature regarding McLeod Syndrome and cardiomyopathy and all of them are referred to adults with neurological symptoms and hyperCKemia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a neurologically asymptomatic 14-year-old male adolescent with hyperCKemia and dilated cardiomyopathy, due to McLeod syndrome. In our patient, the documentation of clinical suspicion of McLeod syndrome was achieved by genetic assessment. Our clinical awareness guided the decision to perform a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) evaluation although the echocardiogram w

Depression in High-Risk Offspring: The Mediating Role of Sleep Problems.

Parental depression is associated with offspring depression and sleep problems are prospectively associated with the development of depression. However, little work has examined sleep problems in the offspring of depressed parents and whether these problems partially account for the association between parent and offspring depression. This longitudinal study examined the indirect effect of sleep problems on the association between parent psychopathology and offspring depression in a sample of 10,953 10 to 12-year-old children participating in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABC

The impacts of early environmental adversity on cognitive functioning, body mass, and life-history behavioral profiles.

Early adverse experiences or exposures have a profound impact on neurophysiological, cognitive, and somatic development. Evidence across disciplines uncovers adversity-induced alternations in cortical structures, cognitive functions, and related behavioral manifestations, as well as an energetic trade-off between the brain and body. Based on the life history (LH) framework, the present research aims to explore the adversity-adapted cognitive-behavioral mechanism and investigate the relation between cognitive functioning and somatic energy reserve (i.e., body mass index; BMI). A structural equa

Brain structures with stronger genetic associations are not less associated with family- and state-level economic contexts.

We investigate whether neural, cognitive, and psychopathology phenotypes that are more strongly related to genetic differences are less strongly associated with family- and state-level economic contexts (N = 5374 individuals with 1KG-EUR-like genotypes with 870 twins, from the Adolescent Behavior and Cognitive Development study). We estimated the twin- and SNP-based heritability of each phenotype, as well as its association with an educational attainment polygenic index (EA PGI). We further examined associations with family socioeconomic status (SES) and tested whether SES-related differences

Timing of early correction of mandibular hypoplasia in skeletal class II malocclusion: a review.

Skeletal Class II malocclusion is a common malocclusion seen in clinics. It is characterized by maxillary protrusion and mandibular retrognathia and has a high incidence in adolescent mixed dentition and early permanent dentition. The early functional correction has achieved some clinical results in treating skeletal Class II malocclusion with mandibular hypoplasia. During treatment, the timing of correction is the key factor in determining the therapeutic effect, although it is difficult to understand. This review focuses on the timing of early correction of mandibular hypoplasia in combinati

The kyphosis-lordosis difference parameter and its utility in understanding the pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship of sagittal spinal shape in the pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is recognised. What is not clear is the relationship between the sagittal shape of those without scoliosis and the potential development of AIS, including the greater prevalence in females. The use of a new parameter, the kyphosis-lordosis (KL) difference, was developed to explore this further. RESULTS: The KL difference was calculated for 117 males and 79 females over seven years with 831 measures made. For females, the KL difference, between the ages of 9 and 12 ½ years, decreas

Multidimensional characteristics of young Brazilian volleyball players: A Bayesian multilevel analysis.

Brazil has been the benchmark for volleyball performance for at least two decades, providing a unique context to examine expertise development. This study examined the variation in body size, functional capacities, motivation for achievement, competitiveness, and deliberate practice of youth volleyball players associated with differences in biological maturity status, chronological age, and accumulated deliberate volleyball practice, adopting a Bayesian multilevel modeling approach. We considered 68 female and 94 male adolescent players (14.2 years, 90% confidence interval: 12.7 to 16.0). Play

FoxD1-driven CCN2 deletion causes axial skeletal deformities, pulmonary hypoplasia, and neonatal asphyctic death.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a severely disabling disease often leading to death. CCN2 (Cellular Communication Network factor 2, also known as CTGF) is a known mediator of fibrosis and clinical trials studying anti-CCN2 efficacy in pulmonary fibrosis are currently underway. Fork head box D1 (FoxD1) transcription factor is transiently expressed in several mesenchymal cell types, including those of fetal lungs. Differentiation of FoxD1-progenitor derived pericytes into myofibroblasts involves CCN2 expression and contributes importantly to maladaptive tissue remodeling in e.g. kidney and lung fibrosis m

Ketamine Reverses Lateral Habenula Neuronal Dysfunction and Behavioral Immobility in the Forced Swim Test Following Maternal Deprivation in Late Adolescent Rats.

Mounting evidence suggests that the long-term effects of adverse early life stressors on vulnerability to drug addiction and mood disorders are related to dysfunction of brain monoaminergic signaling in reward circuits. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the lateral habenula (LHb) as LHb dysfunction is linked to the development of mental health disorders through monoaminergic dysregulation within brain reward/motivational circuits and may represent a critical target for novel anti-depressants, such as ketamine. Here, we show that maternal deprivation (MD), a severe early life stres

The serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram suppresses activity in the neonatal rat barrel cortex in vivo.

Inhibition of serotonin uptake, which causes an increase in extracellular serotonin levels, disrupts the development of thalamocortical barrel maps in neonatal rodents. Previous in vitro studies have suggested that the disruptive effect of excessive serotonin on barrel map formation involves a depression at thalamocortical synapses. However, the effects of serotonin uptake inhibitors on the early thalamocortical activity patterns in the developing barrel cortex in vivo remain largely unknown. Here, using extracellular recordings of the local field potentials and multiple unit activity (MUA) we

Drug-involved Mexican-origin girls' HIV prevention needs: A pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to collect data to inform the development of an HIV prevention program for drug-involved Mexican-origin (MO) adolescent girls. Eighteen in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with drug-involved MO girls in addition to focus group discussions with nineteen other drug-involved MO girls and eight clinical service providers in 2009-2010. Emergent themes indicated that HIV prevention programs for drug-involved MO girls should be girl-centered, focused on relationship development, and include trained peer facilitators who share the same cultural and "s

Associations between oxytocin-related genes and autistic-like traits.

Oxytocin has repeatedly been shown to influence human behavior in social contexts; also, a relationship between oxytocin and the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been suggested. In the present study, we investigated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the oxytocin gene (OXT) and the genes for single-minded 1 (SIM1), aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator 2 (ARNT2) and cluster of differentiation 38 (CD38) in a population of 1771 children from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (CATSS). Statistical analyses were performed to investigate any associati

Melanoma in children and adolescents.

Childhood and adolescent melanoma is rare, accounting for only 1.3% for all cases of cancer in patients under the age of 20 years. However, in 15-19 year olds, melanoma accounts for up to 7% of all cancers. Review of reported cases in this age group reveals that predisposing 'paediatric' conditions such as a giant congenital melanocytic naevi or xeroderma pigmentosum are rarely present. Furthermore, inactivating germ-line mutations of the gene CDKN2A have only been reported in 1.5% of cases of early onset melanoma. Epidemiological studies suggest that interactions between solar exposure, devel

Testing of a 50 cc stroke volume completely implantable artificial heart: expanding chronic mechanical circulatory support to women, adolescents, and small stature men.

The development of a completely implanted total artificial heart at our institution has progressed to successful in vivo and in vitro testing of a device that is nearing clinical testing. This system consists of a 70 cc stroke volume pump originally designed to be used in men of average stature. Implantation of this system remains limited by patient size; hence, many women and adolescent patients will likely be precluded from support because of their smaller stature. A system similar in design, but with a 50 cc stroke volume pump has been developed. The first in vivo study of this device has b
