Rodents, particularly rats, are widely held to be the source of most human cases of leptospirosis. Feral rats were trapped at sites throughout Barbados during two six month surveys: from October to March 1986/87 and from October to March 1994/95. During the first survey, 63 rats were trapped, of which 26 (41%) were identified as Rattus rattus and 37 (59%) as Rattus norvegicus. In the second study, 100 rats were trapped, of which R. rattus comprised 24% (24) and R. norvegicus 76% (76). Cultures of blood, urine and kidney were made in EMJH medium. Leptospires were isolated from 12/63 (19%) and f

A simple method for detection of proviral DNA sequences of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was developed using dried blood specimens on filter papers. The whole blood was blotted onto the Guthrie paper. After the blood has dried, the blotted paper was punched out into small discs. The discs were then boiled to prepare the template for PCR (filter paper-PCR method). The filter paper-PCR method detected even a single HTLV-1-infected cell in three discs. The sensitivity of the filter paper-PCR method was equivalent to that of the method in which DNA was extracted with phenol and u

Twenty colostrum-fed piglets from three sows were separated from the sows 24 hours after birth and were randomly divided into five groups of four piglets each. Every piglet in each of four test groups was orally inoculated with about 10(10) colony forming units of Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella choleraesuis var Kunzendorf or one of two isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. One group served as uninoculated controls. Piglets infected with K. pneumoniae developed severe diarrhea beginning about 12 hours after inoculation. They became dehydrated and weak but continued to drink. There were no morp

Brucellosis has always been an unusual disease in children and, concomitant with the control of the disease in domestic animals, reports have become sparse. The pediatrician, therefore, may not be aware of the protean clinical manifestations of childhood brucellosis. In 1973, nine cases occurred during a three-month period in El Paso, Texas. All cases were marked by spiking fevers and lethargy of four days to four weeks in duration. Tender hepatomegaly or splenomegaly was striking in seven patients. Other characteristics included epistaxis, arthralgia, myalgia, and weight loss. Leukopenia and

Platelet-type von Willebrand disease (PT-VWD) is a rare thrombocytopathy caused by gain-of-function variants in GP1BA, leading to increased binding of von Willebrand factor (VWF). Because its phenotype closely resembles VWD type 2B (VWD 2B), misdiagnosis is common, and distinction requires Ristocetin-induced platelet agglutination (RIPA) mixing studies and molecular genetic analysis. Although individual case reports, case series, and earlier summaries exist, an updated and comprehensive synthesis of all published cases has been lacking. We report a 4-year-old boy presenting with easy bruising,

BACKGROUND: Syphilis and neurosyphilis remain significant comorbidities among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Data on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings in co-infected individuals are limited. This study aimed to determine which CSF parameters and HIV-related immunologic and virologic markers are associated with neurosyphilis in people living with HIV (PLWH), and to assess the impact of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on these relationships.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 211 people living with HIV undergoing syphilis serology and CSF testing at a tertia

OBJECTIVE: To identify the virulence factors responsible for toxic shock syndrome in causative strains submitted by field laboratories throughout the Czech Republic.
METHODS: To detect the production of TSST-1 and staphylococcal enterotoxins, the micro-slide gel diffusion test was initially used and later followed by reverse passive latex agglutination. Currently, the polymerase chain reaction is the preferred tool for the detection of toxin genes as well as genes for other toxins of S. aureus strains: exfoliatins A, B, and D, Panton-Valentine leukocidin, and the mecA and mecC genes responsib

BACKGROUND: EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia (EDTA-PTCP) is an in vitro phenomenon that may lead to expensive, time-consuming, and invasive diagnostic procedures as well as unnecessary patient treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of time, anticoagulant and detection channel on the platelet (PLT) count of EDTA-PTCP samples, and to suggest a better method for correcting spurious low PLT counts.
METHODS: In this study, 43 identified EDTA-PTCP samples were collected. The Sysmex XN-9100, Mindray BC-6900 and Mindray BC-5390 haematology analysers were used to test the

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, is a worldwide parasitic zoonosis. A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the exposure to T. gondii in equids in Europe. Serum samples from 1399 equids (1085 horses, 238 donkeys, and 76 mules/hinnies) bred in four European countries (Italy, Spain, United Kingdom [UK], and Ireland) were collected during the period of 2013-2021. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii was 18.9% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 16.9-21.0) by using the modified agglutination test (MAT) at a cut-off of 1:25. Seropositivity

Sheep are highly susceptible to Toxoplasma gondii, and miscarriage is the main clinical feature. This study investigated 227 sheep samples (210 myocardial tissues from slaughterhouses, 6 ewe serum samples, 3 aborted fetuses, and 8 dead lambs from veterinary clinics) from central China for T. gondii infection. Antibodies against T. gondii were detected using the modified agglutination test (MAT). PCR was performed to detect T. gondii DNA in the tissue samples. The results showed that four samples were seropositive (MAT titer ≥ 1:100), with a seroprevalence of 1.8% (4/227). The seropositive samp

Felids are definitive hosts of Toxoplasma gondii, being the only hosts that can spread the infection through oocyst shedding in their feces. The elevated presence of this parasite in the domestic cat (Felis catus), and its close contact with humans, make it necessary to obtain reliable diagnostic methods to detect positive animals as a public health measure. For this reason, in this study, the diagnostic performance of five different recombinant antigen-based techniques was assessed to diagnose T. gondii infection in cat blood plasma samples. Specifically, four T. gondii recombinant antigens (

Hepcidin is widely present in many kinds of fish and is an important innate immune factor. A variety of HAMP2-type hepcidins have strong antimicrobial activity and immunomodulatory functions and are expected to be developed as substitutes for antibiotics. In this study, the antimicrobial activity of Hepc2 from Japanese seabass (Lateolabrax japonicus) (designated as LJ-hep2) was investigated using its recombinant precursor protein (rLJ-hep2) expressed in Pichia pastoris and a chemically synthesized mature peptide (LJ-hep2(66-86)). The results showed that both rLJ-hep2 and synthetic LJ-hep2(66-8

Growing populations of Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) may result in increased disease transmission among wildlife and spillover to poultry. Lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) is an avian retrovirus that is widespread in Wild Turkeys of eastern North America, and infections may influence mortality and parasite co-infections. We aimed to identify individual and spatial risk factors of LPDV in Maine's Wild Turkeys. We also surveyed for co-infections between LPDV and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV), Mycoplasma gallisepticum, and Salmonella pullorum to estimate trends in prevalence and
