A case is reported of severe anaphylactic shock occurring in a 32 yr old woman after foetal extraction during caesarean section. The agent responsible was the latex from the surgical gloves used. This was proved by the different allergological tests carried out: positive prick-tests to the latex, positive human basophil degranulation test and the finding of specific anti-latex IgE. All the tests carried out using the anaesthetic drugs were negative.

The effect of the adult worms and migrating L1 larvae of Trichinella spiralis on the production of specific IgE antibodies was determined in BCF1 mice. To achieve this, we combined the effect of two anthelminthics: thiabendazole, to produce chemosterilization of adult females, and napthalophos, to expel adult worms from the intestine of infected mice on the desired day. Vancomycin is becoming increasingly used for prophylaxis, and treatment against resistant forms of penicillinase-producing staphylococci. This drug, and the aminoglycosides as a group, have serious side-effects and organ toxicity, and may interact with anaesthetic drugs, particularly muscle relaxants. Two cases of anaphylactoid reactions to vancomycin are reported. The first patient subsequently developed oliguria and marked oedema, while the second developed non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema.

Immediate anaphylactic reactions after intradiscal chymopapain (CP) injection may occur in 1% of patients undergoing chemonucleolysis (CN). Skin prick testing to CP (10 mg/ml), a prescreening history, and CP serum-specific IgE determinations by the RAST method were performed in order to identify patients presensitized to CP before CN. Follow-up repeat CP skin testing and serum-specific IgE were done 2 to 6 weeks after CN to detect CP IgE-mediated sensitization resulting from the injection. An antibody of known specificity and active in long (72 hours) latent period passive cutaneous anaphylactic reactions, was isolated and partially purified from bovine serum. This antibody was not associated with immunoglobulins IgG, IgM or IgA.
