PURPOSE: γ Irradiated Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin has shown in vitro and ex vivo antitumor activity. However, to our knowledge the potential antitumor capacity has not been demonstrated in vivo. BACKGROUND: Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the standard adjuvant therapy for high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (HR-NMIBC). Toll-like receptors (TLRs) modulate the BCG immune response. The calmodulin antagonist trifluoperazine and its analog chlorpromazine, both amphipaths, induced chemical germination of spores of various species, as do many surfactants. Cation load can greatly influence this response. Calmodulin antagonism does not seem to be involved. A new fluorometric assay for dipicolinic acid based on the fluorescence of the dipicolinic acid chelate of Tb3+ was found to be simple and sensitive.

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is newly reported infectious disease observed mainly in HIV-infected patients, caused by a small gram-negative bacillus of the Rochalimea genus. From a purely dermatological presentation similar to that of Kaposi's sarcoma, it may evolve into a systemic disease. Bone lesions seem fairly frequent. We report a case of an isolated osteolytic lesion due to the BA bacillus.

A bacillus which corresponds closely with the description of B. granulosis Noguchi was isolated from 1 of 5 typical cases of trachoma in Chinese. Inoculation of suspensions of this bacillus into the eyelids of M. sinensis monkeys produced scarring and contraction of the tarsal cartilages with the development of a few conjunctival follicles in 2 out of 5 animals. The possible relations of the observed lesions with human trachoma have been discussed.

Trypanosoma congolense infected goats were vaccinated with Bacillus anthracis spore vaccine to determine the effect of such infection on the humoral immune response to the vaccine. The anti-anthrax antibody levels were severely depressed in infected goats. When trypanocidal therapy was administered to T. congolense infected goats 14 days after infection they developed antibody levels against Bacillus anthracis similar to uninfected controls.
