Six groups of ten beef calves six to eight months of age were shipped from western Canada and observed untreated for one week after arrival. BACKGROUND: Using sterile hand-drying products for surgical hand antisepsis incurs high economic and labor costs.
METHODS: In March 2024, a controlled study was conducted with 50 medical volunteers from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The study compared bacterial cultures on hands after drying with different products and using a rinse-free hand disinfectant, while also calculating the hand-drying cost per surgical procedure.

BACKGROUND: Few studies evaluated the post-endoscopic adverse events in patients with neutropenia. We investigated the development of infectious events after endoscopic procedures in neutropenic patients with hematologic diseases.
METHODS: Patients with neutropenia and hematologic diseases who underwent endoscopic procedures were enrolled. Neutropenia was defined as an absolute neutrophil count < 1500 cells/mm3 and its severity was subdivided as mild, moderate (< 1000 cells/mm3), and severe (< 500 cells/mm3). Infectious events were defined as fever or bacteremia within 7 days after endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR) is a rare phenomenon in metastasized melanoma associated with poor prognosis and rapid disease progression. Currently, no specific therapeutic options exist other than treating the underlying malignancy.
METHODS: Five cases of paraneoplastic neutrophilia in patients with advanced-stage IV melanoma were enrolled in our study. Cytokine concentrations in patients' serum samples were analyzed before and during PLR using a multiplex cytokine array. Further, immunohistochemical staining of tumor tissue biopsied during PLR was performed.

A 38-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of right chest pain and high fever. Chest X-ray and computed tomography scan revealed right pleural effusion and pleural thickness. Diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma was established by pleural biopsy. Serum level of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) was high. We performed extrapleural pneumonectomy which improved high fever and inflammation, however the patient died three months after surgery.
