Coping response and family communication of cancer risk in men harboring a BRCA mutation: A mixed methods study.

OBJECTIVE: Providing genetic counseling and genetic testing to at-risk blood relatives (cascade screening) is important for improving BRCA cancer outcomes. Intra-familial communication of risk is critical for cascade screening efforts yet relatively little is known about men's role in communicating BRCA risk. We sought to examine men's coping response to their BRCA status and intra-familial communication of risk to inform the development of tailored interventions that could promote cascade screening. METHODS: We employed a sequential mixed-methods design. First, we measured coping response (q…

Vagueness and Ambiguity in Communication of Case Management: A Content Analysis in the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Case management (CM) is an integrated care strategy, characterised by a set of actions to support person-centred planning, coordination of health and social services. Decades of CM, organisational psychology and occupational research highlight how vagueness and ambiguity in role communication can create role conflict and job stress, negatively impacts staff turnover, intra-organisational collaboration, job performance, and that poor communication of CM impedes policy, quality analysis service development and practice. We conducted a detailed top-down hierarchical, quality analysis of communica…

Pseudoaneurysm of the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa with fistulous communication to the left atrium causing congestive heart failure.

Pseudoaneurysms of the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa can rupture and form fistulous communications between the left ventricle and left atrium. Pulmonary venous systolic flow reversal in such cases reflects elevated left atrial pressure due to shunting. This finding, particularly in the setting of endocarditis, is not specific for severe mitral regurgitation.

Evaluating person-centered factors associated with brain-computer interface access to a commercial augmentative and alternative communication paradigm.

Current BCI-AAC systems largely utilize custom-made software and displays that may be unfamiliar to AAC stakeholders. Further, there is limited information available exploring the heterogenous profiles of individuals who may use BCI-AAC. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to evaluate how individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) learned to control a motor-based BCI switch in a row-column AAC scanning pattern, and person-centered factors associated with BCI-AAC performance. Four individuals with ALS completed 12 BCI-AAC training sessions, and three individuals without neurological im

Short Communication: Plasma Lymphocyte Activation Gene 3 and Subclinical Coronary Artery Disease in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

Chronic inflammation, including among people with HIV (PWH), elevates immune cell expression of lymphocyte activation gene 3 (LAG3); however, low plasma LAG3 predicts cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in the general population. The associations among LAG3 plasma levels, subclinical atherosclerosis, inflammation, and HIV infection have not been well described. We measured plasma LAG3 in 704 men with and without HIV from the multicenter AIDS cohort study, who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography. HIV serostatus was not independently associated with LAG3 after adjustment for socio

Creating a Path for Systematic Investigation of Children With Cortical Visual Impairment Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

Purpose There is limited information about how to support children with cortical visual impairment (CVI) who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). An initial review designed to explore the available evidence was used to outline critical needs in moving research and intervention forward for children who use AAC and have CVI. Method Previous systematic reviews, six databases, and theses and dissertations were systematically searched, along with reviews of the resulting works cited. An initial yield of 575 articles was narrowed to 10, which discussed AAC interventions that inc…

Securing the Insecure: A First-Line-of-Defense for Body-Centric Nanoscale Communication Systems Operating in THz Band.

This manuscript presents a novel mechanism (at the physical layer) for authentication and transmitter identification in a body-centric nanoscale communication system operating in the terahertz (THz) band. The unique characteristics of the propagation medium in the THz band renders the existing techniques (say for impersonation detection in cellular networks) not applicable. In this work, we considered a body-centric network with multiple on-body nano-senor nodes (of which some nano-sensors have been compromised) who communicate their sensed data to a nearby gateway node. We proposed to protect…

[Is Neuron-Vascular Communication Disturbed in the Delayed Prenatal Brain Development of a Mouse Model of Down Syndrome?].

Developmental retardation of the brain with reduced cortical neurogenesis is observed in Ts1Cje mice, a model of Down syndrome (DS) as it is in people with DS; however, the mechanisms and the responsible gene(s) remain unknown. The goal of the present study is to establish a therapeutic approach for treating the delayed brain development in DS. To achieve this, we have utilized multiple OMICS analyses, including proteomics and transcriptomics, to uncover the molecular alterations in the brains of DS model mice. Furthermore, we have elucidated that a transcriptional factor, the Erg gene, which
