Controlled Hypoxia Acutely Prevents Physical Inactivity-Induced Peripheral BDNF Decline.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a crucial mediator of neuronal plasticity. Here, we investigated the effects of controlled normobaric hypoxia (NH) combined with physical inactivity on BDNF blood levels and executive functions. A total of 25 healthy adults (25.8 ± 3.3 years, 15 female) were analyzed in a randomized controlled cross-over study. Each intervention began with a 30 min resting phase under normoxia (NOR), followed by a 90 min continuation of NOR or NH (peripheral oxygen saturation [SpO2] 85-80%). Serum and plasma samples were collected every 15 min. Heart rate and SpO2 we

A patient-centered 'test-drive' strategy for ankle-foot orthosis prescription: Protocol for a randomized participant-blinded trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are commonly used to overcome mobility limitations related to lower limb musculoskeletal injury. Despite a multitude of AFOs to choose from, there is scant evidence to guide AFO prescription and limited opportunities for AFO users to provide experiential input during the process. To address these limitations in the current prescription process, this study evaluates a novel, user-centered and personalized 'test-drive' strategy using a robotic exoskeleton ('AFO emulator') to emulate commercial AFO mechanical properties (i.e., stiffness). The study will dete

Comparison of two 3D reconstruction models for understanding of complicated female pelvic tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed models have been shown to improve visualization in complex female pelvic tumors. Cinematic rendering (CR) is a 3D imaging technique for computed tomography (CT) images, which creates more realistic images with the ability to enhance imaging of anatomical features for diagnosis. This study was set up to compare two types of 3D models and to validate the use of 3D anatomical techniques for the diagnosis of complex female pelvic tumors. METHODS: The preclinical, randomized, two-sequence crossover investigation was performed from December 2022 to Ja

Elastic Bands Improve Oral Appliance Treatment Effect on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: A Randomised Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Oral appliances (OAs) that limit mouth opening during sleep, such as monobloc appliances, have shown superior treatment effects in subgroups of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. The application of elastic bands on bibloc appliances may resemble these benefits. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to investigate if application of elastic bands to bibloc appliances improves treatment success (> 50% reduction of respiratory event index (REI)), in addition to other subjective variables. Furthermore, we aimed to identify variables predicting the need for elastic bands in OA trea

Comparative Pharmacokinetics of Curcuminoids from Water-Dispersible Turmeric Extract Against a Curcuminoids-Piperine Combination: An Open-Label, Randomized, Balanced, 2-Treatment, 2-Sequence, 2-Period Crossover Study.

OBJECTIVE: Curcuminoids, the major component of which is curcumin, are natural polyphenolic compounds from the rhizome of Curcuma longa Linn. and possess extensive biopharmacological properties that are limited in humans due to poor bioavailability. Currently, most commercial bioavailable turmeric extracts use synthetic excipients or the addition of piperine to enhance bioavailability, and are needed in multiple daily doses to achieve clinical efficacy. This study was conducted to compare the bioavailability of a natural, water-dispersible turmeric extract containing 60% natural curcuminoids,

Prevalence of orthostatic hypotension and associated factors among older people with hypertension in Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hypertension increases with age, and older people with this condition are at increased risk of developing orthostatic hypotension (OH) due to age-related changes in blood pressure regulation mechanisms as well as prescribed medications. OH increases the risk of falls, often with subsequent fractures as well as other morbidity and even mortality. The prevalence and characteristics of OH in older people with hypertension in Low-Income Countries have not been well characterized. This study aims to determine the prevalence of OH and associated factors among older peop

Effects of physical exercise on cardio-respiratory health of young adults during short-term exposure to varying air pollution levels.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution (AP) has become a substantial environmental issue affecting human cardiorespiratory health. Physical exercise (PE) is widely accepted to promote cardiorespiratory health. There is a paucity of research on the point at which the level of polluted environment engaged in PE could be used as a preventive approach to compensate for the damages of AP. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of acute moderate-intensity PE on the cardio-respiratory and inflammatory responses of young adults in varying levels of AP, and to determine the pollution level at which engaging in short-te

Acute ergogenic effects of repetitive maximal breath-holding maneuvers on hematological and physiological responses: a graded exercise test investigation.

PURPOSE: Repetitive maximal breath-holds (BHs or apneas) have been noted to induce advantageous hematological and blood buffering changes. Building on this, the hypothesis was formulated that the execution of repeated maximal BH efforts might lead to subsequent enhancements in performance during a time-to-exhaustion test. METHODS: This study investigated the acute effects of five static maximal breath-holding maneuvers conducted with face immersion in cold water (10 °C) on subsequent graded exercise test (GET) performance. Seventeen well-trained participants completed a GET on a motorized tre

Evaluation of URO17® to improve non-invasive detection of bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for detecting bladder cancer is cystoscopy with biopsy or transurethral resection confirming histologic diagnosis. URO17® employs a chromogenically labeled monoclonal antibody to keratin 17 (k17), an intermediate filament cytoskeleton molecule associated with bladder, pancreatic, and cervical cancers. Preliminary studies evaluating k17 demonstrated a high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of bladder cancer, supporting the need for further study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of URO17. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study

Reservoir-excess pressure parameters are independently associated with NT-proBNP in older adults.

AIMS: Parameters derived from reservoir-excess pressure analysis have been demonstrated to predict cardiovascular events. Thus, altered reservoir-excess pressure parameters could have a detrimental effect on highly-perfused organs like the heart. We aimed to cross-sectionally determine whether reservoir-excess pressure parameters were associated with N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in older adults. METHODS: We studied 868 older adults with diverse cardiovascular risk. Reservoir-excess pressure parameters were obtained through radial artery tonometry including reservo
