Community health programmes can be one of the most important and most available forms of education for the total community. This article outlines health programmes and health education initiatives, as well as approaches to participatory training, in several South Pacific countries.

The etiology of and suspected risk factors leading to mild mental retardation were analyzed in unselected series of 109 Bahraini school children with this condition born between 1967 and 1982. The cause was considered to be prenatal in 38.5% of the children; perinatal (asphyxia and prematurity), in 11.9%; and postnatal, in 7.4%. In 42% the cause was untraceable. A decade of perinatal audit in the Maputo Central Hospital is reviewed with the objective of addressing the potential value of the audit process in monitoring the different constituents of morbidity and mortality in the perinatal period. A Thai male, aged 36 yrs, presented with chronic progressive sensorimotor polyneuropathy and mixed osteosclerotic and lytic lesions at the lumbar vertebrae (L). Adults accompanying 64 children attending a hospital out-patient clinic were questioned about treatment and injections given for illnesses in the previous month. Half the children had received injections, almost all given by private doctors: we consider most of these injections to have been unnecessary. Three girls were paralysed by aggravation poliomyelitis after unnecessary injections. Adults approved of injections although they did not know what was injected.

Twenty one surgically documented cases of Meckel's diverticulum in children treated at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal since 1981 are reviewed. Of them, 14 presented with intestinal obstruction, 2 with pain abdomen, 2 with Littre's hernia and 2 were found incidentally. Only one patient presented with gastrointestinal bleeding. The clinical profile of these patients is analyzed.
