Prevention of nostril lacerations in endonasal drilling procedures by use of a conventional protective ear speculum.

PURPOSE: Injuries of the nasal vestibular skin caused by the rotating burr shafts can represent a tedious complication following endonasal drilling and is experienced sooner or later by every rhino-surgeon. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To protect the nasal entrance from laceration by the free rotating drill shaft we position an otology speculum in the nasal entrance. The speculum is held in place by the scrub nurse during the critical phase of bone drilling. RESULTS: Following the introduction of the ear speculum protection, we successfully treated our dacryocystostamia procedures (n = 27) and medi…

The Piezo channel is a mechano-sensitive complex component in the mammalian inner ear hair cell.

The inner ear is the hub where hair cells (HCs) transduce sound, gravity, and head acceleration stimuli to the brain. Hearing and balance rely on mechanosensation, the fastest sensory signals transmitted to the brain. The mechanoelectrical transducer (MET) channel is the entryway for the sound-balance-brain interface, but the channel-complex composition is not entirely known. Here, we report that the mouse utilizes Piezo1 (Pz1) and Piezo2 (Pz2) isoforms as MET-complex components. The Pz channels, expressed in HC stereocilia, and cell lines are co-localized and co-assembled with MET complex par…

Morphometric Study of Malleus, Incus, and Stapes of Middle Ear Along With Associated Clinical Significance.

The ear ossicles transmit sound from the external ear to the inner ear. The aplasia, hypoplasia, erosion, and trauma to the ear ossicles cause conductive deafness, which can be corrected by ossiculoplasty, for which detailed knowledge of morphometry of the ear ossicles is very essential. So, the study was carried out. The aim of the study is to analyze the morphometric data and correlate it with clinical significance. The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy using 47 malleus, 46 incus, and 10 stapes of known age, sex, and side. The various parameters of these ossicles were measured…

Ear Keloid as an Unusual Complication of Prolonged Mask Use during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic required many people to wear ear-loop face masks (ELFMs) for protracted periods, and ear injuries have been reported. Here, we report a rare case of a keloid on the right posterior ear that appeared to arise from prolonged ELFM use. A 76-year-old Japanese man presented with a 7.3 × 2.2 × 1.4-cm keloid running from the medial retroauricular sulcus to the posterior lobule. The lack of keloid history suggested the absence of genetic risk factors. The patient reported extensive mask-wearing habits that were augmented by the pandemic. The keloid developed from an ear in…

Experience With Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery and Preoperative Imaging in the Case of Persistent Stapedial Artery.

The persistent stapedial artery (PSA) is an exceedingly vascular anomaly that can lead to hearing loss or pulsatile tinnitus, yet its preoperative diagnosis is often challenging. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman with bilateral PSA and stapes ankylosis who presented with progressive bilateral mixed hearing loss. The patient was initially diagnosed with bilateral congenital stapes ankylosis and stapes surgery was performed on the left side using transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES). Intraoperative observation of the tympanic cavity revealed the presence of a persistent stapedial art…

The presence of a submucous cleft palate in patients with isolated cleft lip and middle ear dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested that children with an isolated cleft lip (CL) are more likely to develop middle ear disease and eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) compared to the general population. This may be related to abnormal palatal musculature or an undiagnosed submucosal cleft palate (SMCP). We aim to determine the prevalence of SMCP in patients with CL who exhibit ETD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for children with an isolated CL requiring tympanostomy tubes over a 20-year period at an academic tertiary care medical center. Demographic, clin…
