Unilateral congenital linear atrophoderma of the leg.

We report an infant with depressed, hypopigmented, linear plaques of congenital onset on the lower extremity. The lesions were asymptomatic and the child was otherwise healthy. Despite the clinically obvious change in skin texture and color, histopathologic changes were subtle: a biopsy specimen showed hypopigmentation and a decrease in elastic fibers in the papillary and upper reticular dermis. Diagnoses considered included various congenital syndromes, idiopathic atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini, and especially, linear atrophoderma of Moulin. However, because of the significant clinical an

Palpation imaging using a haptic system for virtual reality applications in medicine.

In the field of medical diagnosis, there is a strong need to determine mechanical properties of biological tissue, which are of histological … tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) imaging. However, they cannot provide direct measure of tissue elasticity. Last year we presented the concept of the first haptic sensor actuator system to visualize and reconstruct mechanical properties of tissue using ultrasonic elastography and a haptic display with electrorheological fluids. We developed a real time s …

[Unilateral acro-keratoelastoidosis].

INTRODUCTION: Acrokeratoelastoidosis was first described by O. Costa in 1953. We report a new case with a unilateral localization. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old woman had atypical acrokeratoelastoidosis lesions of the right hand and foot since adolescence. Diagnosis was confirmed by histology. DISCUSSION: Several cases of acrokeratoelastoidosis have been reported in the literature, but this case is novel because of the unilateral localization. We recall the characteristic features of this disease and emphasize the heterogeneous nature of the manifestations. Differential diagnosis is discussed f

Viscoelastic behavior of fractionated ovine submaxillary mucins.

Solution properties of fractionated ovine submaxillary mucin (OSM) and asialo OSM (aOSM) in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride have been investigated using light scattering and rheological methods. For the first time we present viscometric evidence in both dilute and concentrated solution that the molecular structure of OSM is that of a wormlike chain. The intrinsic viscosity shows molecular weight dependence consistent with the linear extended chain conformation observed by light scattering measurements. The viscoelastic behavior of the OSM fractions in aqueous guanidine hydrochloride was furthe

[Vascular damage in arterial hypertension: its noninvasive assessment].

Arterial hypertension is a definite risk factor for the atherosclerotic disease and thus has a primary role in the genesis of cardiovascular diseases, but it acts also though a direct structural damage of great and small arteries and arterioles. Up to date, clinical research and technological advancements have made possible the development of instruments and methods for the evaluation of the vascular damage. Ultrasonographic methods are now the better non invasive tools for the study of arterial diseases, allowing a definition power comparable to angiography, and giving useful data on characte

Viscoelastic behavior of erythrocyte membrane.

A nonlinear viscoelastic relation is developed to describe the viscoelastic properties of erythrocyte membrane. This constitutive equation is used in the analysis of the time-dependent aspiration of an erythrocyte membrane into a micropipette. Equations governing this motion are reduced to a nonlinear integral equation of the Volterra type. A numerical procedure based on a finite difference scheme is used to solve the integral equation and to match the experimental data. The data, aspiration length vs. time, is used to determine the relaxation function at each time step. The inverse problem of

Protocol for AFM Nanoindentation of Viruses and Protein Cages.

Protein-based nanocompartments are ubiquitous in nature. They include both viruses as well as protein cages from non-viral origin. To broaden our knowledge on viruses and non-viral protein nanoshells, a profound insight into their mechanical properties is required. Nanoindentation measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM) are increasingly being performed to probe such material properties. This single-particle approach allows for determining the shell's spring constant, their Young's modulus, as well as the force and deformation at which failure occurs. The experimental procedures for

Cross-Linkable Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Polymer Blends With Ultrawide Modulus Tunability.

Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymers have attracted considerable attention for their promising applications in information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and flexible optoelectronics. Herein, we report a strategy combining physical blending and in situ covalent cross-linking to fabricate processable RTP polymer blends with ultrawide mechanical tunability. Flowable precursors are first prepared by dispersing carbazole-based phosphor-doped polystyrene (PS) into polyethylene glycol (PEG), followed by cross-linking of terminal hydroxyl groups to form a three-dimensional p

Mechanical-acoustic-optical response properties in uniaxial compression failure of rock masses with different dissolution degrees.

To reveal the effects of dissolution cavities on the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of surrounding rock, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on rock-like specimens with dissolution degrees of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. A mechanical-acoustic-optical integrated system combining acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) was used to characterize mechanical response, AE activity, strain field evolution, and failure behavior. The results indicate that with increasing dissolution degree, compressive strength, elastic modulus, peak axial strain, and deformation mod

A computational dynamics and damping-induced transitions in beam-foundation systems with viscoelastic constraints.

This study examines the vibrational dynamics of elastically constrained beam foundation systems by considering Timoshenko, shear, Rayleigh, and Euler-Bernoulli beam models resting on viscoelastic Filonenko-Borodich and Hetényi foundations. Emphasis is placed on understanding how damping, foundation stiffness, shear deformation, and rotary inertia govern dynamic transitions across undamped, underdamped, and overdamped regimes. Using separation of variables for the analytical solution and the Galerkin finite element method for the numerical solution, non-classical boundary conditions are used fo

Ultra-Robust and Hyperelastic Triboelectric Webbing for Self-Powered Rehabilitation Sensing with Invisible and Embedded Design.

Driven by the rapid evolution of flexible electronics, rehabilitation healthcare is shifting toward devices that seamlessly interface with human body. Yet, existing solutions often simply layer flexible sensor units over rigid components, making it difficult to combine high elasticity, mechanical robustness, and true imperceptibility. Here, we are pioneering a super-tough (∼54.7 MPa) and highly stretchable (>400% strain) triboelectric webbing (T-webbing) that overcomes this long-standing trade-off through the synergistic integration of an embedded textured architecture and functional elastic y…

Fiber-Based Hydrogels for Designing Viscoelastic Responses in Particle-Based Biomaterials That Support Embedded 3D Printing.

Viscoelastic biomaterials that exhibit biomimetic responses to applied stresses are important in studying physiology and designing biomaterial scaffolds. Particle-based hydrogels offer potential for engineering viscoelasticity through the design of both the component microparticles and their processing into bulk particle-based materials. When particles are not cross-linked to one another, particle movements in response to strain can potentially relieve applied stresses and facilitate the material's use in dynamic processes like bioprinting. In particle-based hydrogels based on spherical hydrog…

Stiffening of soft silicone upon deep UV treatment as characterized using nanoindentation.

Silicones are elastomers that have a wide variety of uses, including biomedical applications such as the coating of biomedical devices and as implants. Soft silicones with mechanical properties similar to those of biological tissues have particularly gained use as substrates for cell culture in mechanobiology studies. In this context, it would be desirable to be able to alter their surface mechanical properties with a relatively simple physical treatment. While deep ultraviolet (deep UV) or ultraviolet C (UV-C) treatment has been previously used as a surface treatment method for stiffer silico

Water pressure effect and influence mechanism of coal mechanical property degradation under mine water immersion conditions.

This study investigates the hydro-pressure effects and degradation mechanisms of coal under mine water immersion using a self-developed pressurized water soaking system. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on water-saturated coal samples to analyze their mechanical behavior under varying water pressures. The results demonstrate that both the strength and elastic modulus of coal samples decrease with increasing immersion pressure. During loading, multiple deformation localization zones develop, and the elastic energy stored in the load-bearing structure diminishes as water pressure rises,

Ultrasound Elastography in Prostate Diseases: Current Status and Future Directions-A Review.

Prostate diseases, including prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia, have become significant threats to men's health. Accurate and reliable diagnostic methods are critical for early detection and timely intervention. Although current imaging modalities such as conventional transrectal ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of prostate diseases, they remain hampered by certain limitations that prevent them from comprehensively and precisely addressing clinical demands. Ultrasound elastography (UE),

Novel biomarkers for alcohol-associated liver disease and their implications across clinical settings.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a leading cause of preventable cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and liver-related mortality, yet current laboratory and imaging tools detect only late-stage disease. This narrative review synthesizes emerging evidence on novel biomarkers that capture the multidimensional pathophysiology of ALD and discusses their utility for routine clinical practice. Traditional serum-based liver fibrosis markers (e.g., cytokeratin-18 fragments, Pro-C3, the enhanced liver fibrosis test) improve non-invasive staging risk beyond aminotransferases, while elasto
