PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Anastomotic leakage (AL) and presacral abscess (PA) after rectal cancer surgery are a major concern for the colorectal surgeon. In this study, incidence, prognosis and treatment was assessed.
METHODS: Patients operated on in our institute, between 1994 and 2011, for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC, T3+/T4M0) were included. Morbidity was scored using the Clavien-Dindo classification. Prognostic factors were analysed using binary logistic regression.
RESULTS: 517 patients were included after a low anterior resection (n = 219) or abdominoperineal resection (n = 232).

We conducted an international, prospective, 3-year questionnaire-based survey among 11 pulmonary hypertension centres to assemble data from patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) undergoing noncardiac and nonobstetric surgery. Data were collected between July 2007 and June 2010 from 114 patients with PAH (70% female, mean age 57 years) who underwent major surgery. AIM: To measure the drift of ocular alignment following strabismus surgery utilising adjustable sutures.

PURPOSE: Most surgeons and podiatrists prefer to operate on toes and feet with a bloodless operating field. This can be achieved with a pneumatic tourniquet applied to the thigh after exsanguination of the limb with a rubber bandage or with an Esmark bandage alone, placed below the knee. A pneumatic tourniquet requires the use of general anesthesia with associated increased risks. 103 patients from a group of 115 patients with catecholamine secreting tumours were reinvestigated 7.0 +/- 4.9 years following surgery. Throughout the follow-up period 15 patients had died. BACKGROUND: Third molar surgery is a common procedure performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. This kind of surgery is predictable, and complications are infrequent. Immune deficiency is one of the considerations for the prevention of complications. HIV patients may be immune deficient. Third molar surgical procedures are associated with bleeding and increased risk of infection. Improvement in oral hygiene must be encouraged, such as pre-operative scaling. OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function after orthognathic surgery differs from normal patients. Dysfunction of the joints occurs often even in the general public, with an incidence in the range of 20%-25%. Population-based studies among adults report that approximately 10%-15% have symptoms of pain and 5% of them had a perceived need for treatment. BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a growing and probably undervalued concern for neurosurgeons and spine surgeons, as they can impact their quality of life and career length. This systematic review aims to ascertain this association and to search for preventive measures.

CONCLUSION: The choice of technique will depend on the glottic gap observed by stroboscopy, the alteration of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the recorded values of harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), jitter and shimmer, and the general health, age and underlying pathology.
