The estimation of skeletal maturity of patients with cleft lip and palate using statistical shape analysis: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: To propose a skeletal maturity assessment method by developing a statistical regression analysis model through the integration of lateral and axial images of the cervical vertebrae of patients with cleft lip and palate obtained through CBCT. METHODS: 49 patients with cleft lip and palate (28 females, 21 males; age range, 4-16 years) underwent CBCT examination, and the hand-wrist radiographic data were selected. With coordinates of landmarks from lateral and axial images of the cervical vertebrae, Procrustes analysis and principal component (PC) analysis yielded PC scores of each c

The relation of object naming and other visual speech production tasks: a large scale voxel-based morphometric study.

We report a lesion-symptom mapping analysis of visual speech production deficits in a large group (280) of stroke patients at the sub-acute stage (<120 days post-stroke). Performance on object naming was evaluated alongside three other tests of visual speech production, namely sentence production to a picture, sentence reading and nonword reading. A principal component analysis was performed on all these tests' scores and revealed a 'shared' component that loaded across all the visual speech production tasks and a 'unique' component that isolated object naming from the other three tasks. Regio

Measurement of preoperative lobar lung function with computed tomography ventilation imaging: progress towards rapid stratification of lung cancer lobectomy patients with abnormal lung function.

OBJECTIVES: In lung cancer preoperative evaluation, functional lung imaging is commonly used to assess lobar function. Computed tomography ventilation (CT-V) imaging is an emerging lung function imaging modality. We compared CT-V imaging assessment of lobar function and its prediction of postoperative lung function to that achieved by (i) positron emission tomography ventilation (PET-V) imaging and (ii) the standard anatomical segment counting (ASC) method. We hypothesized (i) that CT-V and PET-V have similar relative lobar function and (ii) that functional imaging and anatomic assessment (ASC

Usefulness of texture analysis in differentiating transient from persistent part-solid nodules(PSNs): a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Early discrimination between transient and persistent par-solid ground-glass nodules (PSNs) at CT is essential for patient management. The objective of our study was to retrospectively investigate the value of texture analysis in differentiating pulmonary transient and persistent PSNs in addition to clinical and CT features. METHODS: This retrospective study was performed with IRB approval and a waiver of the requirement for patients' informed consent. From January 2007 to October 2009, we identified 77 individuals (39 men and 38 women; mean age, 55 years) with 86 PSNs on thin-sec

Interobserver reliability of computed tomography-derived primary tumor volume measurement in patients with supraglottic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have determined that macroscopic ("gross") tumor volume (GTV), as calculated from pretreatment computer tomography (CT), was capable of predicting local control in squamous cell carcinoma arising in different subsites in the head and neck in patients who were treated with nonsurgical organ-preservation therapy. The majority of these studies were single-institution, retrospective investigations. Consequently, there has been concern that GTV measurements may not be reproducible by different readers at different institutions. The objective of the current study was to mea
