Dynamic Graph Theoretical Analysis of Functional Connectivity in Parkinson's Disease: The Importance of Fiedler Value.

Graph theoretical analysis is a powerful tool for quantitatively evaluating brain connectivity networks. Conventionally, brain connectivity is assumed to be temporally stationary, whereas increasing evidence suggests that functional connectivity exhibits temporal variations during dynamic brain activity. Although a number of methods have been developed to estimate time-dependent brain connectivity, there is a paucity of studies examining the utility of brain dynamics for assessing brain disease states. Therefore, this paper aims to assess brain connectivity dynamics in Parkinson's disease (PD)

Adaptive Sojourn Time HSMM for Heart Sound Segmentation.

Heart sounds are difficult to interpret due to events with very short temporal onset between them (tens of milliseconds) and dominant frequencies that are out of the human audible spectrum. Computer-assisted decision systems may help but they require robust signal processing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for heart sound segmentation using a hidden semi-Markov model. The proposed algorithm infers more suitable sojourn time parameters than those currently suggested by the state of the art, through a maximum likelihood approach. We test our approach over three different da

Virtual M-Mode for Echocardiography: A New Approach for the Segmentation of the Anterior Mitral Leaflet.

Rheumatic heart disease can result from repeated episodes of acute rheumatic fever, which damages the heart valves and reduces their functionality. Early manifestations of heart valve damage are visible in echocardiography in the form of valve thickening, shape changing and mobility reduction. The quantification of these features is important for a precise diagnosis and it is the main motivation for this work. The first step to make this quantification is to accurately identify and track the anterior mitral leaflet throughout the cardiac cycle. An accurate segmentation and tracking with minimu

Optimized Multistable Stochastic Resonance for the Enhancement of Pituitary Microadenoma in MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice as far as imaging diagnosis of pathologies in the pituitary gland is concerned. Furthermore, the advent of dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) has enhanced the capability of this modality in detecting minute benign but endocrinologically significant tumors called microadenoma. These lesions are visible with difficulty and a low confidence level in routine MRI sequences, even after administration of intravenous gadolinium. Techniques to enhance the visualization of such foci would be an asset in improving the overall accuracy of DCE-MRI for

Application of short message service to control blood cholesterol: a field trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations, many middle-age adults neglect to check their blood cholesterol levels. Short message service (SMS, also known as texting) has been seldom studied for preventive education. We estimated how SMS can be a cost-effective method in encouraging people to check their blood cholesterol levels. METHODS: In a field trial, 3600 cell phone users (age > 30) were randomly assigned to the intervention (N: 1200) and the control groups (N: 2400). An SMS was sent to the intervention group for five rounds every two weeks, which targeted the cognitive and affective learning

Quantitative Evaluation of Rehabilitation Effect on Peripheral Circulation of Diabetic Foot.

Diabetes may cause different foot problems, which could easily lead to infection, ulcers, and increasing risk of amputation due to nerve or vascular injury. In order to reduce the risk of amputation, Buerger's exercise is frequently used for rehabilitation to improve the blood circulation in lower limbs. However, it is difficult to evaluate the rehabilitation efficiency with Buerger's exercise objectively. In this study, a novel non-invasively optical system is developed to non-invasively monitor the change of the foot blood circulation before and after long-term Buerger's exercise. Radial bas

Parameters Extracted From Arterial Pulse Waves as Markers of Atherosclerotic Changes: Performance and Repeatability.

Arterial diseases are significant and increasing cause of mortality and morbidity. In this study, we analyze and compare the discrimination capability of different arterial pulse wave (PW) based indices, both earlier proposed and novel ones, for describing the vascular health. The repeatability of the indices is also evaluated. Both volume PWs and dynamic pressure PWs are recorded by using photoplethysmographic and electromechanical film (EMFi) sensors connected to a wireless body sensor network. The study population consists of 82 subjects, 30 atherosclerotic patients, and 52 control subjects

A Survey on Computer Vision for Assistive Medical Diagnosis From Faces.

Automatic medical diagnosis is an emerging center of interest in computer vision as it provides unobtrusive objective information on a patient's condition. The face, as a mirror of health status, can reveal symptomatic indications of specific diseases. Thus, the detection of facial abnormalities or atypical features is at upmost importance when it comes to medical diagnostics. This survey aims to give an overview of the recent developments in medical diagnostics from facial images based on computer vision methods. Various approaches have been considered to assess facial symptoms and to eventua

Knowledge-driven binning approach for rare variant association analysis: application to neuroimaging biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Rapid advancement of next generation sequencing technologies such as whole genome sequencing (WGS) has facilitated the search for genetic factors that influence disease risk in the field of human genetics. To identify rare variants associated with human diseases or traits, an efficient genome-wide binning approach is needed. In this study we developed a novel biological knowledge-based binning approach for rare-variant association analysis and then applied the approach to structural neuroimaging endophenotypes related to late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). METHODS: For rare-var

Surface structure feature matching algorithm for cardiac motion estimation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac diseases represent the leading cause of sudden death worldwide. During the development of cardiac diseases, the left ventricle (LV) changes obviously in structure and function. LV motion estimation plays an important role for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases. To estimate LV motion accurately for cine magnetic resonance (MR) cardiac images, we develop an algorithm by combining point set matching with surface structure features of myocardium. METHODS: The structure features of myocardial wall are described by estimating the normal directions of points locating on

A Bayesian network and heuristic approach for systematic characterization of radiotherapy receipt after breast-conservation surgery.

BACKGROUND: Breast-conservation surgery with radiotherapy is a treatment highly recommended by the guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. However, several variables influence the final receipt of radiotherapy and it might not be administered to breast cancer patients. Our objective is to propose a systematic framework to identify the clinical and non-clinical variables that influence the receipt of unexpected radiotherapy treatment by means of Bayesian networks and a proposed heuristic approach. METHODS: We used cancer registry data of Detroit, San Francisco-Oakland, and A

Effective Glottal Instant Detection and Electroglottographic Parameter Extraction for Automated Voice Pathology Assessment.

Accurate determination of glottal instants and electroglottographic (EGG) parameters is most important in voice pathology analysis including multiple voice disorders: neurological, functional, and laryngeal diseases. In this paper, we present a new effective method for reliable detection of glottal instants and EGG parameters from an EGG signal composed of voiced and nonvoice segments. In the first stage, we present an adaptive variational mode decomposition based algorithm for suppressing low-frequency artifacts and additive high-frequency noises. Based upon mode center frequency criterion, t

Dynamic-ETL: a hybrid approach for health data extraction, transformation and loading.

BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) contain detailed clinical data stored in proprietary formats with non-standard codes and structures. Participating in multi-site clinical research networks requires EHR data to be restructured and transformed into a common format and standard terminologies, and optimally linked to other data sources. The expertise and scalable solutions needed to transform data to conform to network requirements are beyond the scope of many health care organizations and there is a need for practical tools that lower the barriers of data contribution to clinical rese

Empirical advances with text mining of electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Korian is a private group specializing in medical accommodations for elderly and dependent people. A professional data warehouse (DWH) established in 2010 hosts all of the residents' data. Inside this information system (IS), clinical narratives (CNs) were used only by medical staff as a residents' care linking tool. The objective of this study was to show that, through qualitative and quantitative textual analysis of a relatively small physiotherapy and well-defined CN sample, it was possible to build a physiotherapy corpus and, through this process, generate a new body of knowled

Autism risk classification using placental chorionic surface vascular network features.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the United States. It was hypothesized that variations in the placental chorionic surface vascular network (PCSVN) structure may reflect both the overall effects of genetic and environmentally regulated variations in branching morphogenesis within the conceptus and the fetus' vital organs. This paper provides sound evidences to support the study of ASD risks with PCSVN through a combination of feature-selection and classification algorithms. METHODS: Twenty eight arterial and 8 shape-based PCSV

Detection of Nocturnal Scratching Movements in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis Using Accelerometers and Recurrent Neural Networks.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting both children and adults and is associated with pruritus. A method for objectively quantifying nocturnal scratching events could aid in the development of therapies for atopic dermatitis and other pruritic disorders. High-resolution wrist actigraphy (three-dimensional accelerometer sensors sampled at 20 Hz) is a noninvasive method to record movement. This paper presents an algorithm to detect nocturnal scratching events based on actigraphy data. The twofold process consists of segmenting the data into "no motion," "single han

Differences Between Gait on Stairs and Flat Surfaces in Relation to Fall Risk and Future Falls.

We used body-worn inertial sensors to quantify differences in semi-free-living gait between stairs and on normal flat ground in older adults, and investigated the utility of assessing gait on these terrains for predicting the occurrence of multiple falls. Eighty-two community-dwelling older adults wore two inertial sensors, on the lower back and the right ankle, during several bouts of walking on flat surfaces and up and down stairs, in between rests and activities of daily living. Derived from the vertical acceleration at the lower back, step rate was calculated from the signal's fundamental

Epithelium-Stroma Classification via Convolutional Neural Networks and Unsupervised Domain Adaptation in Histopathological Images.

Epithelium-stroma classification is a necessary preprocessing step in histopathological image analysis. Current deep learning based recognition methods for histology data require collection of large volumes of labeled data in order to train a new neural network when there are changes to the image acquisition procedure. However, it is extremely expensive for pathologists to manually label sufficient volumes of data for each pathology study in a professional manner, which results in limitations in real-world applications. A very simple but effective deep learning method, that introduces the conc

A novel data-driven workflow combining literature and electronic health records to estimate comorbidities burden for a specific disease: a case study on autoimmune comorbidities in patients with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Data collected in EHRs have been widely used to identifying specific conditions; however there is still a need for methods to define comorbidities and sources to identify comorbidities burden. We propose an approach to assess comorbidities burden for a specific disease using the literature and EHR data sources in the case of autoimmune diseases in celiac disease (CD). METHODS: We generated a restricted set of comorbidities using the literature (via the MeSH® co-occurrence file). We extracted the 15 most co-occurring autoimmune diseases of the CD. We used mappings of the comorbidit
