The periapical microbiota of 36 teeth with refractory apical periodontitis was investigated. None of the teeth had responded to conventional endodontic or long-term (> 6 months), calcium-hydroxide treatment. Eight patients had received antibiotics systemically. We present our observations on the skeletal muscle pathology of nine cases from seven families of autosomal dominant Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (ADEDMD) with identified mutations in the lamin A/C gene, aged 2-35 years at the time of biopsy. A 62-year-old man with a history of a resected rectal polyp was diagnosed 14 years later with right liver and multiple bone metastases. The liver biopsy showed a malignant epithelial tumor that was positive for neuron-specific enolase immunostaining and negative for chromogranin. PURPOSE: This study investigated the tissue response associated with titanium plates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Titanium miniplates were used to stabilize fractured bones and a bone graft in 14 patients. We studied 20 individuals from 17 unrelated families with congenital dyserythropoietic anemia (type II; CDAII). The clinical phenotype was mild to moderate. The inheritance pattern was invariably recessive. BACKGROUND: Zidovudine (azidothymidine, AZT) causes a toxic mitochondrial myopathy in AIDS patients with changes in mitochondrial (mt) DNA and mitochondrial structure.
