BACKGROUND: Release of virus-blocking Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes is an emerging disease control strategy that aims to control dengue and other arboviral infections. Early entomological data and modelling analyses have suggested promising outcomes, and wMel Wolbachia releases are now ongoing or planned in 12 countries. To help inform government, donor, or philanthropist decisions on scale-up beyond single city releases, we assessed this technology's cost-effectiveness under alternative programmatic options.
METHODS: Using costing data from existing Wolbachia releases, previous dynamic model

BACKGROUND: The location of the microhabitats where immature phlebotomine sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia develop is one of the least-known aspects of this group of medically important insects. For this reason strategies of source reduction approach for their control have not been possible in contrast to other insect vectors (such as mosquitoes), because their juvenile stages in terrestrial microhabitats is difficult to detect.
METHODS: Direct examination of soil samples, incubation of substrates and the use of emergence traps were the methods used to identify juvenile stages in 160 soil sa

Vaccines that target blood-feeding disease vectors, such as mosquitoes and ticks, have the potential to protect against the many diseases caused by vector-borne pathogens. We tested the ability of an anti-tick vaccine derived from a tick cement protein (64TRP) of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus to protect mice against tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) transmitted by infected Ixodes ricinus ticks. The vaccine has a "dual action" in immunized animals: when infested with ticks, the inflammatory and immune responses first disrupt the skin feeding site, resulting in impaired blood feeding, and then

Studies were conducted on the efficacy of Olyset nets-a long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) factory treated with 2% (w/w) permethrin on malaria transmission in an area under the influence of pyrethroid susceptible vector species Anopheles culicifacies and A. fluviatilis in Sundargarh District, Orissa, India. The study area comprised 22 villages that were randomized into three clusters and designated as Olyset net, untreated net, and no net area. Malaria incidence in the study population was measured through longitudinal active surveillance at fortnightly intervals. There was a reduction of 65

Botanical extracts and essential oils derived from medicinal plants have attracted increasing interest as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic insecticides for mosquito control. In the present study, nanoemulsion formulations of Araucaria heterophylla and Azadirachta indica leaf extracts were developed to enhance their insecticidal efficacy against Culex pipiens and their biochemical impacts. Nanoemulsions were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential analysis, and transmission electron microscopy, confirming stable nanoscale droplets with spherical m…

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission is highly sensitive to climatic variability, as changes in temperatures and rainfall, directly influence mosquito breeding, survival, and parasite development. Extreme climatic events, such as flooding, further exacerbate malaria risk by disrupting access to preventive, diagnostic and treatment services. However, there is limited evidence on how communities in malaria-endemic settings perceive and respond to the health impacts of climate variability and change. This study explored community knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to the relationship betwe

Background and Objectives: Malaria, a mosquito-borne parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium species, remains a public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions. In Saudi Arabia, sustained control efforts have substantially reduced malaria transmission; however, regional heterogeneity and the growing contribution of imported infections continue to shape national malaria epidemiology. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive national assessment of malaria patterns in Saudi Arabia within a prevention-of-reintroduction framework. Materials and Methods: National malaria surveillanc

O'nyong-nyong virus (ONNV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus first isolated in Uganda in 1959. Since its discovery, ONNV has caused several outbreaks in Africa, manifesting clinically as fever, rash, and joint/muscle pain lasting months. Currently, we have a limited understanding of ONNV infection and disease in relevant animal models, which restricts the evaluation of vaccines and therapeutics. In 1967, Binn et al. reported that infection of rhesus macaques (RMs) with ONNV failed to induce viremia in two animals. This may be attributed to the potential attenuation of the virus through extensive

Getah virus (GETV) is an emerging mosquito-borne zoonotic alphavirus that poses a threat to multiple animal species, particularly pigs, and carries significant public health implications. Nevertheless, the molecular evolution and pathogenicity of circulating GETV strains in China remain incompletely defined. In this study, three GETV strains were isolated from diseased piglets during concurrent outbreaks on three geographically distinct commercial pig farms in China in August 2025. The isolates shared 99.67%-99.91% genomic nucleotide (nt) identity and were phylogenetically classified into subg

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus transmitted by a wide range of mosquito vectors present across the African continent. RVFV has resulted in large-scale epidemics in East, West, southern, and northern Africa with additional epidemics affecting the Arabian Peninsula, Mayotte, and Comoros. In some areas, rather than large-scale isolated outbreaks, RVFV causes a fluctuating low-level endemic burden affecting livestock populations by resulting in pregnancy loss and significant production losses. RVFV risk extends into the human population when it is transmitted either by vecto

Orthoflavivirus denguei (Dengue virus) type 4; (DENV-4) has emerged as a significant public health concern in Brazil, particularly following its reintroduction in the early 21st century. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of DENV-4's genetic characterization and its spatiotemporal dynamics reassessment within Brazil, with a focus on the period between 2010 and 2017. We performed direct genomic sequencing on 24 human samples obtained from various Brazilian states using a multiplex sequencing approach on the Ion Torrent platform. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the new isolates bel

The Aedes aegypti mosquito serves as a vector for several diseases, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. This species is well adapted to urban environments and poses a significant threat to public health. Some studies suggest that the gut bacteria of insect vectors may play a crucial role in developing resistance to insecticides. This study assessed the resistance of Ae. aegypti from Florencia, Caquetá, to temephos and deltamethrin and analyzed the diversity of gut bacteria in resistant larvae and adult females. Larvae exhibited resistance to temephos at a lethal concentratio

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne zoonosis that causes periodic and explosive epizootics/epidemics in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In Rwanda, RVF virus (RVFV) circulation has resulted into two major outbreaks in 2018 and 2022, both of which involving humans. Information on the magnitude of human exposure to RVFV in the country is scarce. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of RVFV and associated risk factors in humans in the Eastern province of Rwanda, 3 years after the end of the 2018 outbreak.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 552 outpatients

GW4869, a cell-permeable, selective inhibitor of neutral sphingomyelinase is a pharmacological agent that blocks the production and release of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Our previous studies have shown that GW4869 inhibits flaviviral loads in tick, mosquito and mammalian cells, including murine cortical neurons. Yet the mechanism(s) of GW4869 inhibitor upon viral infections were not addressed. In the current study, we focused on how GW4869 interferes with Langat Virus (LGTV, a tick-borne flavivirus) replication in ISE6 tick cells. First, we found that GW4869 is neither cytotoxic at tested d

BACKGROUND: Promoting the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) is one of the main strategies for reducing malaria-related morbidity. An innovative activity-based contracting (ABC) approach has been implemented in Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo to optimize ITN mass distribution campaigns, with payments based on contractually defined programmatic outcomes for key campaign activities following independent verification of results.
METHODS: This internal evaluation was carried out using a mixed methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative document and content an

Ecdysteroids are major hormones in insects and control molting, growth, reproduction, physiology, and behavior. The biosynthesis of ecdysteroids such as 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) from dietary sterols is well characterized, but ecdysteroid catabolism is poorly understood. Ecdysteroid kinases (EcKs) mediate the reversible phosphorylation of ecdysteroids, which has been implicated in ecdysteroid recycling during embryogenesis and reproduction in various insects. However, to date, only 2 EcK-encoding genes have been identified, in the silkworm Bombyx mori and the mosquito Anopheles gambiae. Previou

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is currently the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral illness in the world, with over half of the world's population living in areas at risk of dengue. As dengue continues to spread and become more of a health burden, it is essential to have tools that can predict when and where outbreaks might occur to better prepare vector control operations and communities' responses. One such predictive tool, the Early Warning and Response System for climate-sensitive diseases (EWARS-csd), primarily uses climatic data to alert health systems of outbreaks weeks before they occur. EWAR

Uganda has had repeated outbreaks of Rift Valley fever (RVF) since March 2016 when human and livestock cases were reported in Kabale after a long interval. The disease has a complex and poorly described transmission patterns which involves several mosquito vectors and mammalian hosts (including humans). We conducted a national serosurvey in livestock to determine RVF virus (RVFV) seroprevalence, risk factors, and to develop a risk map that could be used to guide risk-based surveillance and control measures. A total of 3,253 animals from 175 herds were sampled. Serum samples collected were scre

The goal of global malaria programming is to eliminate and eventually eradicate the disease. Achieving this global goal requires eliminating malaria in individual endemic countries. This paper, based on the observations of current and former implementers of malaria programs at district level, examines Ghana's malaria strategy to determine its adequacy for the elimination of malaria in the country, with a focus on the governance of district health systems. The paper argues that Ghana's malaria strategy is medically oriented, focusing predominantly on diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The
