The interprofessional clinical practice model is arguably the most impactful and generative aspect of hospice and palliative care (HPC) clinical practice. This article describes the innovative, shared interprofessional leadership model, andragogical infrastructure, program development, educational impact, and critical lessons from the Interactive Educational Exchange (IEE). In response to a deficit in interprofessional HPC educational opportunities for rapid scholarship dissemination and mentorship, interprofessional leaders from medicine, social work and nursing proposed and implemented the I

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence-based concussion practices have been codified into legislation, yet implementation has been narrowly evaluated. We examined implementation of concussion practices in Massachusetts high schools and adopted a disproportionality lens to assess the relationship between school sociodemographic and policy implementation and examine whether differences in policy implementation represent systematic disparities consistent with the disproportionality literature.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was sent to Massachusetts high school nurses (N=304). Responses (n=201;

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is regarded as one of the most critical public health challenges of the 21st century. It has evolved into a burgeoning epidemic since the last century, and today ranks among the major causes of mortality worldwide. Diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs) are central to good patient care and outcomes including confident self-care management. Evidence shows that DSNs are cost-effective, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce length of stay in hospital. In this brief narrative review, we aim to describe the roles of DSNs and their contribution in the treatment and management of pa

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired dysphagia has severe consequences for patients including increased morbidity and mortality. Standard operating procedures, however, including systematic evaluation of swallowing function and access to specialised assessment and training may be limited. Dysphagia management relies on multiprofessional collaboration, but practice is variable and nonstandardised.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore and compare nurses', physicians', and occupational therapists' perceptions of dysphagia management in the ICU.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis and timely management of neonatal late-onset sepsis (nLOS) have been less well-studied than those of early-onset sepsis. We noticed a delay in nLOS detection and management in our neonatal intensive care unit.
PURPOSE: To develop an assessment tool to aid in the recognition and reporting of nLOS and to standardize the management process once sepsis is recognized.
METHODS: The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) improvement model provided the framework for interventions for our antibiotic stewardship program, including the aims of this project. A literature review was perf

Our aim with this review is to provide practical advice and management support for nurses and other healthcare practitioners in managing fluid retention in adults with right heart failure (RHF) due to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Vigilant management of RHF is important for maintaining patient quality of life, as fluid overload can lead to abdominal bloating (ascites) and peripheral oedema, which also has a major impact on patients' morbidity and mortality. Patients with RHF should be assessed regularly for signs of fluid retention. If fluid overload develops, it is important to deter

Chronic pain, stemming primarily from musculoskeletal conditions and severe headaches, is a growing problem in the United States, affecting as many as 43% of adults. Opioids are frequently prescribed to manage chronic pain despite limited data on their long-term efficacy and the potential risks of long-term use. In 2017, more than 47,000 people died as a result of an opioid overdose involving illicit opioids (such as heroin), illicitly manufactured opioids, diverted opioids, prescription opioids, or some combination thereof. Although it's been more than three years since the nationwide opioid

PURPOSE: Non-medical or contextual factors strongly influence physicians' prescribing behavior and may explain why drugs, such as benzodiazepines and Z-drugs, are still frequently prescribed in spite of well-known adverse effects. This study aimed to explore which contextual factors influence the prescription of hypnotics and sedatives and to compare their role in primary and secondary care.
METHODS: Understanding medical practices as games with specific rules and strategies and performed in a largely habitual, not fully conscious manner, we asked a maximum variation sample of 12 hospital doc

UNLABELLED: Going into hospital may be a frightening experience. Fears and anxieties may be particularly compounded when the patient has an existing health diagnosis such as a mental health condition or intellectual disabilities (ID). While people with ID often have worse health than other people, they can experience more difficulty accessing healthcare.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to describe the self-evaluation process and outcome of a series of workshops designed to cultivate understanding of the health needs of adults with ID.
DESIGN: The research was designed to explore the imp

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an emerging infection that causes a potentially fatal respiratory disease. Although the SARS outbreak lasted less than 1 year, it resulted in significant morbidity and mortality and impacted nursing practices. A literature review was conducted. Only English language research articles in peer-reviewed journals, national organization publications, and book chapters were utilized. Data from 37 relevant articles were extracted, analyzed, and summarized. SARS' clinical description is presented, including its common signs/symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment

INTRODUCTION: Integrated, people-centred care requires continuity and coordination across services, and nurses increasingly contribute to case management; however, evidence on its effectiveness for older adults living at home remains limited. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led case management for community-dwelling older adults compared with usual care.
METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from inception to 13 August 2025, for randomised controlled trials comparing nurse-led case management wi

BACKGROUND: Biosafety, which pertains to the prevention of exposure to biological hazards that could pose risks to human health, ecosystems, and the environment, has become a global concern. Nowadays, biosafety threats are widespread and long-standing, posing a severe risk to all human lives. A key measure in tackling biosafety issues is to clarify the competence of clinical nursing staff in responding to biosafety incidents. Nevertheless, little network analysis research has been done on the relationships between the components of clinical nurses’ biosafety incident response competence. PURPO

Pain is highly prevalent during hospitalization, and inadequate assessment contributes to avoidable suffering, prolonged length of stay, and increased resource use. Nurses play a central role in pain assessment, timely analgesic administration, patient education, and escalation of care. Background/Objectives: This study assessed nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain assessment and management and examined perceived causes of delayed pain treatment and perceived barriers to timely pain control at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was condu

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are associated with a poor prognosis in intensive care units (ICUs). Nursing care during the night can further disturb patient sleep. We hypothesized that nursing rounds and care would be less harmful to sleep if guided by a real-time sleep monitoring system.
METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental, prospective, before-after study including non-sedated ICU patients. In the usual care group (first group recruited), nursing rounds and care were performed every four hours as daily practice, regardless of the patient's sleep/wake status. In the sleep-guided care grou
