Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia with a Normal QTc Interval in a Patient with COVID-19 and Fever: Case Report.

Cataract formation represents a serious problem in the elderly, with approximately 25% of the population aged >65 years and about 50% aged >80 years experiencing a serious loss of vision as a result of this condition. Not only do cataracts diminish quality of life, they also impose a severe strain on global healthcare budgets. In the US, 43% of all visits to ophthalmologists by Medicare patients are associated with cataract. Surgery represents the standard treatment of this condition, and 1.35 million cataract operations are performed annually in the US, costing 3.5 billion US dollars (year of

Comparative evaluation of the short-term bactericidal potential of a steroid-antibiotic combination versus steroid in the treatment of chronic bacterial blepharitis and conjunctivitis.

The effects of four days' treatment with topical Maxitrol (neomycin sulphate 3500 IU/mL, polymyxin-B sulphate 6000 IU/mL with dexamethasone 0.1%) were compared with those of Maxidex (dexamethasone 0.1% alone) in a double-masked study in 111 patients with bacterial blepharitis or conjunctivitis, 95 of whom were evaluable for efficacy. The majority of patients (N = 80) had chronic blepharitis. Maxitrol treatment resulted in a significantly greater reduction (90%) in bacterial counts and bacterial eradication (50%) compared with Maxidex (34% and 17% respectively). Maxitrol treatment also produced

In situ antibody-loaded hydrogel for intravitreal delivery.

Therapeutic protein medicines have transformed the treatment of blinding diseases (e.g. age-related macular degeneration, AMD) during the last 1-2 decades. Many blinding conditions such as AMD are chronic; and require multiple intravitreal injections over a long period to achieve a high and reproducible dose needed for clinical benefit. Prolonging the duration of action of ophthalmic drugs is critical to reduce the frequency of injections. Thermoresponsive hydrogels (e.g. N-isopropylacrylamide, NIPAAM) that collapse in physiological conditions can entrap and sustain the release of a therapeuti

Efficacy of a fixed combination of 0.09 % xanthan gum/0.1 % chondroitin sulfate preservative free vs polyethylene glycol/propylene glycol in subjects with dry eye disease: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) is multifactorial, affecting 5-34 % of the global adult population and reducing quality of life. The artificial tears or lubricants are the therapy most used for the treatment of DED, due to their low side effect profile, which attempt to modify the properties of the tear film. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a fixed combination of xanthan gum and chondroitin sulfate preservative free on the ocular surface of patients with dry eye disease during 60 days of intervention. METHODS: A phase III, double-blind, masked, controll

Incidence of postoperative eye infections in a private eye hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of information on postoperative eye infections in Nigeria and most hospitals do not have an infection control program in place. OBJECTIVE: This study was done to investigate the incidence of post-operative eye infections, their potential sources and the preparedness of the hospital to prevent such infections. METHODS: A microbiological survey of all eye surgical procedures between March 2004 and May 2005 was performed. Relevant samples were taken and cultured pre, intra and post operatively as required. Definitions of infections were based on the Centers for Dis

Role of protein tyrosine phosphorylation in rat corneal neovascularization.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that tyrosine kinase pathways that are activated by angiogenic growth factors may play a role in corneal neovascularization. METHODS: Corneal neovascularization was induced in rat corneas by chemical cauterization. At 6, 24, 48, 96, and 168 h after chemical cauterization the rat corneas without the corneal epithelium were prepared for gel electrophoresis. Total protein profiles of the corneal samples were examined by staining gels with Coomassie brilliant blue. Tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins, three angiogenic growth factors (basic fibroblast growth

Efficient Ensemble Learning with Curriculum-Based Masked Autoencoders for Retinal OCT Classification.

Background/Objectives: Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) is essential for diagnosing ocular diseases, yet developing high-performing multiclass classifiers remains challenging due to limited labeled data and the computational cost of self-supervised pretraining. This study aims to address these limitations by introducing a curriculum-based self-supervised framework to improve representation learning and reduce computational burden for OCT classification. Methods: Two ensemble strategies were developed using progressive masked autoencoder (MAE) pretraining. We refer to this curriculum-

GA-TAN: a graph aggregation and topology-aware network for unified 3D ocular-cerebral vascular segmentation.

BACKGROUND: The eye and brain share developmental and regulatory vascular similarities, and 3D vascular segmentation from Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is essential for neuro-ophthalmic assessment. However, vascular trees exhibit extreme multi-scale morphology and are vulnerable to topology disruptions caused by OCTA artifacts (e.g., noise and discontinuities) and MRA anatomical variants (e.g., Circle of Willis incompleteness), which often lead to fragmented vessels and unstable segment-wise predictions. PURPOSE: To develop a unified
