Thyroid nodules are frequently accompanied by degenerative changes, such as hemorrhage, cholesterol crystallization, fibrous tissue deposition, or filling with fat. Although calcification is also a common phenomenon, osteogenesis, characterized by mature bone formation, is very rare. Here, we describe a case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis with osseous metaplasia and ectopic bone formation case and discuss its possible causes.

Malformation of teeth can be found in patients with bone diseases, which was induced when the disease occurred during the tooth formation. The tooth malformation shows typical manifestations of the disease, which may demonstrate the occurrence of the bone disease. We describe a girl with a severe progressive type of osteogenesis imperfecta, in association with multisutural craniosynostosis, growth failure, and craniofacial findings including ocular proptosis, marked frontal bossing, midface hypoplasia, and micrognathia. Collagen analysis was normal. These features are consistent with the diagnosis of Cole-Carpenter syndrome. This report provides further evidence for the existence of this rare genetic entity.

We report the case of a 52-year-old woman with a cerebellopontine angle tumor, which appeared to have arisen from the 8th nerve. Microscopically the tumor was proved to be an acoustic neurinoma and showed unusual findings such as inclusions of mature bone and bone marrow. The histogenesis and diagnostic relevance of the very rare heterotopic osteogenesis in acoustic neurinomas is discussed.

A father and daughter with apparently unique clinical findings are described. The findings include persistent Wormian bones, blue sclerae, mandibular hypoplasia, shallow glenoid fossae and campomelia. Apparently it is an autosomal dominant trait. Although the disorder is in the osteogenesis imperfecta group, nevertheless it appears to be different and until the basic defect is found we have named it "The Grant Syndrome".

A series of clinical cases very rarely observed in rheumatology is presented. These cases consist of osteoid-osteoma, osteogenesis imperfecta, pachydermo-periostosis, multiple chondromatosis, osteopecilia, Camurati-Engelmann disease. The caracteristics of the patients examined are appropriate and well adapted to the typical clinical studies of these diseases, and are considered current with the contributions concerning rheumatology appeared in the most recent literature.

Chronic focal sclerosing osteomyelitis is a periapical lesion that involves reactive osteogenesis evoked by chronic inflammation of the dental pulp. In most cases, this lesion develops in the mandibular molar region in response to a low-grade infection of the pulp that results from a deep carious lesion. A case is presented in which incomplete tooth fracture was the apparent cause of this type of periapical pathosis.

In this article the radiographic manifestations of various genetic diseases predominately affecting bone mineralization are considered. Osteogenesis imperfecta and other diseases of diffuse osteopenia, hereditary rickets and rachiticlike conditions, and osteopetrosis and other diseases of increased bone density are emphasized. Recognition of the radiographic manifestations allows accurate diagnosis, therapeutic intervention when possible, and determination of recurrence risk for genetic counseling.

The clinical use of a temporal periosteal bone flap for the reconstruction of a malar bone in a patient with the Treacher Collins syndrome is presented. The temporal muscle functions as an axial carrier of the periosteum that induces osteogenesis in young children, whereas the bone segments may serve as a nucleus for further bone formation from the periosteum. Correction of the eyelid coloboma was obtained by the rotation and advancement of a temporopalpebral flap.

Postoperative coronary vasospasm is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication after cardiac surgery. We present the case of a young patient with osteogenesis imperfecta who developed coronary vasospasm after each of his 2 aortic valve procedures. A total of 600 handicapped patients had dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia during an eight-year period. Handicaps included mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, seizure disorders, autism, cystic fibrosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and muscular dystrophy. No significant complications developed in the majority of patients. This is attributed to thorough preoperative evaluation, appropriate anesthetic management, and vigilant postoperative observation.
