A new model of bacterial peritonitis in mice for evaluation of antibiotics. Effects of aspoxicillin and piperacillin.

Experimental peritonitis was produced in mice with Escherichia coli TPRL 10760 derived from the intestinal flora of mouse and used to evaluate the chemotherapeutic effects of semisynthetic penicillins, aspoxicillin (ASPC) and piperacillin (PIPC). The peritonitis was induced by inserting a gelatin capsule containing the bacterial cells, sterilized cecal contents and BaSO4 into the pelvic cavity of an anesthetized mouse. Infection with more than 10(6) colony forming units (CFU) of the bacteria/mouse resulted in an acute peritonitis associated with 100% mortality, whereas an inoculum size of 10(2…

Acquired hydrocephalus and hydromyelia in a cat with feline infectious peritonitis: A case report and brief review.

A one-year-old domestic long-haired cat was referred to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine because of acute onset of paraparesis and hyperesthesia associated with trauma. Myelography and cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed severe hydromyelia and myelitis, respectively. The definitive diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis was made by histological examination at necropsy. Lesions were confined exclusively to the brain and spinal cord. Partial occlusion of the third and fourth ventricles with pyogranulomatous debris caused hydrocephalus and subsequent hydromyelia. The hydrom…

Ascitic fluid analysis in the differentiation of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis from gastrointestinal tract perforation into ascitic fluid.

A review of patients with bacterial peritonitis and ascites revealed six patients with gastrointestinal tract perforation into their ascitic fluid and 33 episodes of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in 32 patients. Signs and symptoms were not helpful in differentiating the two groups; however, ascitic fluid analysis was found to be useful. All patients with perforation peritonitis fulfilled at least two of the following criteria: ascitic fluid total protein greater than 1 gm per dl, glucose less than 50 mg per dl and lactate dehydrogenase greater than 225 mU per ml. In only two episodes of sp…

Associations between the Cardiothoracic Ratio and All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in Patients Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis: Fukuoka Peritoneal Dialysis Registry (F-PDR) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) experience exceptionally high mortality. While the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR), a simple radiographic measure, has prognostic value in hemodialysis, its role in PD is unclear because of limited evidence. We hypothesized that a high baseline CTR is independently associated with mortality in patients undergoing PD. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cohort study using data from the Fukuoka Peritoneal Dialysis Registry study. Of 1,217 patients who participated in the study between 2011 and 2020, 972 with a baseline CTR were included. The

Effects of automated peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis on residual kidney function in Chinese patients with new-onset end stage kidney disease.

Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) is a widely used dialysis modality for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). However, controversy remains regarding the rate of residual kidney function (RKF) decline between patients treated with APD and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). This study aimed to investigate the effect of peritoneal dialysis modality on the rate of RKF decline in Chinese patients with new-onset ESKD. We conducted a single-center retrospective study to explore the association between PD modalities and RKF decline. A total of 53 patients with new-onset ESKD

Outcomes on peritoneal dialysis in patients with primary kidney disease related to multiple myeloma: A cohort study with data from the French Language Peritoneal Dialysis Registry.

BackgroundKidney impairment (KI) is a frequent complication of multiple myeloma (MM), with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often necessitating dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) offers quality-of-life advantages over haemodialysis (HD), yet its use in patients with CKD secondary to MM (CKD-MM) remains understudied. This study investigates the characteristics and outcomes of PD in CKD-MM patients compared to those with other kidney diseases.MethodsThis retrospective observational study analysed data from the French Language PD Registry (RDPLF) for patients initiating PD between 2010 and 2020. Integrating single-cell RNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq and network pharmacology reveals protective effect of salidroside in peritoneal dialysis-associated peritoneal fibrosis.

Salidroside (2- (4-Hydroxyphenyl) ethyl β-D-glucopyranoside, SAL) is a bioactive compound present in Rhodiola rosea L., exhibiting diverse pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. Despite its known benefits, the therapeutic potential of SAL in peritoneal dialysis (PD) -induced peritoneal fibrosis remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the protective effects of SAL in PD-related peritoneal fibrosis and its underlying mechanisms through the integration of single-cell RNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, and network pharmacology analyses. A total of 249 diseas

Reduced preoperative serum choline esterase levels and fecal peritoneal contamination as potential predictors for the leakage of intestinal sutures after source control in secondary peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: The high rate of stoma placement during emergency laparotomy for secondary peritonitis is a paradigm in need of change in the current fast-track surgical setting. Despite growing evidence for the feasibility of primary bowel reconstruction in a peritonitic environment, little data substantiate a surgeons' choice between a stoma and an anastomosis. The aim of this retrospective analysis is to identify pre- and intraoperative parameters that predict the leakage risk for enteric sutures placed during source control surgery (SCS) for secondary peritonitis. METHODS: Between January 201…

Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis Due to Bacillus licheniformis in an Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Patient on Peritoneal Dialysis: A Rare Presentation Linked to Avian Exposure.

This case report details a rare instance of Bacillus licheniformis-induced peritonitis in a 43-year-old male diagnosed with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The patient presented with acute onset of severe abdominal pain and fever, prompting a microbiological investigation that revealed Gram-positive bacilli. Initial empirical treatment with ceftazidime and vancomycin was followed by targeted vancomycin therapy upon identification of B. licheniformis. The patient's clinical course showed steady improvement, corroborated by a recent histo…

Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) syndrome presenting as recurrent aseptic peritonitis in a patient receiving peritoneal dialysis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) syndrome is caused by mutations in the ubiquitin-activating enzyme1 (UBA1) gene and characterised by an overlap between autoinflammatory and haematologic disorders. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of a 67-year-Japanese man receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) who had recurrent aseptic peritonitis caused by the VEXAS syndrome. He presented with unexplained fevers, headache, abdominal pain, conjunctival hyperaemia, ocular pain, auricular pain, arthralgia, and inflammatory skin lesions. Laboratory investigations sho…

Patterns of peritoneal dissemination and response to systemic chemotherapy in common and rare peritoneal tumours treated by cytoreductive surgery: study protocol of a prospective, multicentre, observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite optimal patient selection and surgical effort, recurrence is seen in over 70% of patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for peritoneal metastases (PM). Apart from the Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), completeness of cytoreduction and tumour grade, there are other factors like disease distribution in the peritoneal cavity, pathological response to systemic chemotherapy (SC), lymph node metastases and morphology of PM which may have prognostic value. One reason for the underutilisation of these factors is that they are known only after surgery. Identifying clinical p
