OBJECTIVES: The safety, effectiveness and indications for ultrafiltration (UF) are not well established. We hypothesized that UF would not worsen renal function in patients with heart failure (HF) who were not responding to medical therapy.
METHODS: Data was collected for patients who underwent UF between 2006 and 2010 (n = 72, median age 61 years, 54% males, 61% Caucasian, 54% left ventricular ejection fraction ≥ 40%).

OBJECTIVE: To locate aquaporin (AQP) 1, 3, and 4, Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC) 1 and 2 in the human endolymphatic sac (ES).
METHODS: A sample of human ES was harvested during the removal of vestibular schwannoma via the translabyrinthine approach. The sample was immediately fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded in OCT compound. Immunohistochemistry was performed with AQP1, 3, and 4, NKCC1, and NKCC2 polyclonal antibodies.
RESULTS: AQP1, AQP3, and NKCC2 were strongly expressed in the epithelial layer of the ES. AQP4 and NKCC1 were weakly expressed in the epithelial layer of the ES.

The optimal use of diuretics in decompensated heart failure remains uncertain. We analyzed data from the ADHERE registry to look at the impact of diuretic dosing. 62,866 patients receiving <160 mg and 19,674 patients > or =160 mg of furosemide were analyzed. The patients receiving the lower doses had a lower risk for in-hospital mortality, ICU stay, prolonged hospitalization, or adverse renal effects. These findings suggest that future studies should evaluate strategies for minimizing exposure to high doses of diuretics.

We characterized ouabain-insensitive Na+-ATPase activity present in the plasma membrane of Leishmania amazonensis and investigated its possible role in the growth of the parasite. An increase in Na+ concentration in the presence of 1mM ouabain, increased the ATPase activity with a V(max) of 154.1+/-13.5nmol Pi x h(-1) x mg(-1) and a K0.5 of 28.9+/-7.7mM.
