Frailty in liver transplantation: Exploring prescribing exercise as medicine to improve patient outcomes.

Liver transplantation (LT) represents a curative avenue for individuals with advanced chronic liver disease. Given the inherent illness severity of LT candidates, identifying patients at greater risk for adverse outcomes before and after transplantation is paramount. Approximately 50% of cirrhotic patients are frail and have considerable functional impairment. Various measures have been used to assess frailty, including performance-based tests and functional status evaluations. Frailty carries significant prognostic implications and predicts both mortality and pre- and post-LT complications. C

Relationship between psychological stress with functional constipation in children: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: constipation affects up to 29.6% of children worldwide, making it one of the most common gastrointestinal illnesses in the pediatric population. As a functional disorder, the development of constipation is mostly influenced by a child´s psychosocial condition, even considered as one of important contributing factors. This systematic review aims to evaluate the relationship between psychological stress with constipation in the pediatric population. METHODS: three online databases were searched as study sources, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Study sel

Neuropsychological performances, quality of life, and psychological issues in pediatric onset multiple sclerosis: a narrative review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is primarily a disease diagnosed in young and middle-aged adults. Although MS is a rare condition in pediatric age, an increasing rate of patients is diagnosed under the age of 18. The disabling nature of the disease cannot be reduced only to physical symptoms. Several additional symptoms such as cognitive impairment, fatigue, and psychological symptoms are common features of pediatric MS. The reviewed literature suggests that, despite the lower physical disability, children and adolescents diagnosed with MS are vulnerable to cognitive impairment even in the early stage

The neurobiological underpinnings of placebo and nocebo effects.

The placebo effect, once considered only a nuisance in clinical research, is today a target of scientific inquiry that allows us understand how words, rituals and, more in general, the whole psychosocial context around the patient, affect the response to a treatment and the course of a disease. Today we are in a good position to study all these complex psychological factors by using a physiological and neuroscientific approach that uses modern neurobiological tools to probe different brain functions. Since a placebo is represented by the whole ritual of the therapeutic act, the main concept th

Examining social support, rumination, and optimism in relation to binge eating among Caucasian and African-American college women.

PURPOSE: Binge eating is a significant concern among college age women-both Caucasian and African-American women. Research has shown that social support, coping, and optimism are associated with engaging in fewer negative health behaviors including binge eating among college students. However, the impact of sources of social support (i.e., support from family, friends, and a special person), rumination, and optimism on binge eating as a function of race/ethnicity has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social support, rumination, and optimi

Who are those "risk-taking adolescents"? Individual differences in developmental neuroimaging research.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has illuminated the development of human brain function. Some of this work in typically-developing youth has ostensibly captured neural underpinnings of adolescent behavior which is characterized by risk-seeking propensity, according to psychometric questionnaires and a wealth of anecdote. Notably, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed age-dependent differences between adolescents and other age groups in regional brain responsiveness to prospective or experienced rewards (usually greater in adolescents) or penalties (usually diminished in adoles

Quality of life assessment in a living donor kidney transplantation program: evaluation of recipients and donors.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QOL) in donors before and after living kidney donor transplantation (LKDT) has been an important concern. Investigation of these issues in related recipients is not as common. Since 2002, a protocol of psychosocial evaluation for donors and recipients was included in the living kidney donation program. We sought to evaluate QOL in donors and recipients, before and after transplantation, and to compare the 2 groups. METHODS: Before and after transplantation, 35 recipients and 45 donors completed a Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Short-Form 36 Health Survey Quest

Ethical implications for clinical practice and future research in "at risk" individuals.

The last 15 years have witnessed a shift in schizophrenia research with increasing interest in earlier stages of illness with the hope of early intervention and ultimately prevention of psychotic illness. Large-scale longitudinal studies have identified clinical and biological risk factors associated with increased risk of psychotic conversion, which together with symptomatic and demographic risk factors may improve the power of prediction algorithms for psychotic transition. Despite these advances, 45-70% of at risk subjects in most samples do not convert to frank psychosis, but continue to f

Do interactions between stress and immune responses lead to symptom exacerbations in irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, debilitating gastrointestinal (GI) disorder, with a worldwide prevalence of between 10% and 20%. This functional gut disorder is characterized by episodic exacerbations of a cluster of symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating and altered bowel habit, including diarrhea and/or constipation. Risk factors for the development of IBS include a family history of the disorder, childhood trauma and prior gastrointestinal infection. It is generally accepted that brain-gut axis dysfunction is fundamental to the development of IBS; however the underlying pat

Effects of hearing aids on cognitive functions and depressive signs in elderly people.

With the physical, emotional and cognitive effects of senility, elderly people, especially those with impaired hearing, need rehabilitation for improving their life conditions. Hearing aids are frequently used to improve their daily life communications and activities. The aim of this study was to report the cognitive and psychological benefits of using hearing aids by the elderly people, over the age of 65. This was a prospective, single-arm interventional study in 34 elderly subjects with hearing impairment who answered the geriatric depression scale-short form (GDS) questionnaire and the min
