Awake bruxism in temporomandibular disorders patients referred to tertiary care: A retrospective study on its assessment and TMD management.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is defined as a repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. Bruxism can occur during sleep (sleep bruxism, SB) or during wakefulness (awake bruxism, AB). To date, the effect of AB on the purported negative consequences of bruxism has remained unclear. OBJECTIVES: The assessment of AB, its relation to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) treatment modalities, and their possible outcomes were investigated among TMD patients resistant to treatment in primary care and referred to a tertiary car

Association of participants who screened positive for night eating syndrome with physical health, sleep problems, and weight status in an Australian adult population.

BACKGROUND: Night eating syndrome (NES) is a unique eating disorder characterised by evening hyperphagia and nocturnal ingestions which cause significant distress and/or impairment in functioning. Despite the growing literature, NES remains poorly understood and under diagnosed. As such, this study aims to compare the prevalence of physical health conditions in participants with NES when compared to participants without an eating disorder (ED) and participants with other eating disorders (including anorexia nervosa (AN), binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN)) in a general popula

The psychological impact, risk factors and coping strategies to COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers in the sub-Saharan Africa: a narrative review of existing literature.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the physical and mental health of the general population worldwide, with healthcare workers at particular risk. The pandemic's effect on healthcare workers' mental well-being has been characterized by depression, anxiety, work-related stress, sleep disturbances, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Hence, protecting the mental well-being of healthcare workers (HCWs) is a considerable priority. This review aimed to determine risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes and protective or coping measures to mitigate the harmfu

Treatment needs of dementia with Lewy bodies according to patients, caregivers, and physicians: a cross-sectional, observational, questionnaire-based study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the treatment needs of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is essential to develop treatment strategies. We examined the treatment needs of patients with DLB and their caregivers and the extent to which the attending physicians understand these treatment needs. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, observational study conducted using questionnaires for patients, caregivers, and physicians. The study participants included patients, their caregivers, and their attending physicians who were experts in DLB. Fifty-two symptoms that are frequent and clinically imp

Sleep inertia measurement with the psychomotor vigilance task in idiopathic hypersomnia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep inertia is a frequent and disabling symptom in idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), but poorly defined and without objective measures. The study objective was to determine whether the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) can reliably measure sleep inertia in patients with IH or other sleep disorders (non-IH). METHODS: A total of 62 (51 women, mean age: 27.7 ± 9.2) patients with IH and 140 (71 women, age: 33.3 ± 12.1) with non-IH (narcolepsy = 29, non-specified hypersomnolence [NSH] = 47, obstructive sleep apnea = 39, insomnia = 25) were included. Sleep inertia and sleep drunkennes

Can mindfulness mechanistically target worry to improve sleep disturbances? Theory and study protocol for app-based anxiety program.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is associated with sleep disturbance and insomnia. Mindfulness-based interventions, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction, have shown consistent anxiety reduction. Mindfulness training has been theorized to affect reinforcement learning, affecting habitual behaviors such as smoking and overeating, but a direct mechanistic link between the use of mindfulness training for anxiety reduction and improvement in sleep has not been studied. Moreover, the mechanisms by which mindfulness might affect worry and subsequent sleep disturbances have not been elucidated. This study pr

Is sleep deficit associated with infertility and recurrent pregnancy losses? Results from a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Biological rhythms, the innate cycle of changes in the body's physiological functions, are circadian if they have a 24-hour period. It is known that sleep is a key feature of human circadian rhythm but the relation between sleep and female fertility is largely unknown. This paucity of research is surprising given that circadian rhythms are paramount to human physiology and sleep is related to major female reproductive events. This study was designed to investigate whether there is a difference between the sleep and activity parameters of women with poor reproductive outcome compa

Association of CSF orexin-A levels and nocturnal sleep stability in patients with hypersomnolence.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between CSF orexin-A (ORX) levels and markers of nocturnal sleep stability, assessed by polysomnography. METHODS: Nocturnal polysomnography data and ORX levels of 300 drug-free participants (55% men, 29.9±15.5 years, ORX level 155.1±153.7 pg/mL) with hypersomnolence were collected. Several markers of nocturnal sleep stability were analyzed: sleep and wake bouts and sleep/wake transitions. Groups were categorized according to ORX levels, in 2 categories (deficient ≤110; >110), in tertiles (≤26, 26-254, >254), and compared using logistic regression models

Associations Between Widespread Pain and Sleep Quality in People With HIV.

BACKGROUND: We investigate the association of widespread pain with sleep quality among people with HIV and HIV-negative controls. SETTING: UK-based cohort. METHODS: Pain information was collected through a pain mannikin identifying affected body sites; pain was classified as widespread if pain was reported in ≥4 of 5 body regions and in ≥7 of 15 body sites, and as regional otherwise. Sleep was assessed a median of 3.2 years later through 7-night actigraphy and through self-reported assessments of sleep quality. Chi-squared tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and linear/logistic regression considere

Mediators of Change in Imagery Rescripting and Imaginal Exposure for Nightmares: Evidence From a Randomized Wait-List Controlled Trial.

Imagery rescripting (IR) and imaginal exposure (IE) are two efficacious treatments for nightmare disorder, but their discrete underlying mechanism(s) remain largely unknown. We therefore examined mediators of the treatment effects of IR and IE in a randomized wait-list controlled trial (N = 104). Therapeutic outcomes were assessed at pre- and post-assessment, and mediator assessment took place in between treatment sessions to establish a temporal relationship between mediators and nightmare symptoms (i.e., frequency and distress). In line with the hypothesis, enhanced mastery (or self-efficacy

Brief report: Longitudinal associations between physical activity, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms in adolescent girls.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity (PA) and sleep disturbances (SD) are related with depressive symptoms in adults. However, evidence that PA and SD are prospectively associated with depression is mixed. The aim of this study was to examine longitudinal and bidirectional associations between PA, SD and depressive symptoms in adolescent girls. METHODS: A 2-year longitudinal study was conducted consisting of three waves, each separated by 1 year. The participants were 173 Estonian adolescent girls aged 14.3 ± 0.4 years (M±SD) who individually completed self-report measures of PA, SD and depressive

The Emerging Relationship Between Interstitial Fluid-Cerebrospinal Fluid Exchange, Amyloid-β, and Sleep.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques are a key histopathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and soluble Aβ species are believed to play an important role in the clinical development of this disease. Emerging biomarker data demonstrate that Aβ plaque deposition begins decades before the onset of clinical symptoms, suggesting that understanding the biological determinants of the earliest steps in the development of AD pathology may provide key opportunities for AD treatment and prevention. Although a clinical association between sleep disruption and AD has long been appreciated, emerging clinical s

Sleep difficulties and academic performance in Norwegian higher education students.

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties are common among university students and may detrimentally affect academic outcomes. Despite this, remarkably little information is currently available during this critical developmental period of early adulthood, and thus, the direct effect on measurable domains of academic ability and proficiency is equivocal. AIMS: To evaluate the associations between difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS) and subjective and objective academic performance in a large sample of university students. SAMPLE: A total of 12,915 students who participated in large stud

Interest in Information about Nightmares in Patients with Sleep Disorders.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Despite the considerable prevalence of the nightmare disorder and its burden on the patient, nightmares are underdiagnosed and undertreated, even in sleep centers. METHODS: A total of 1,125 patients in a sleep center undergoing routine diagnostic procedures for their sleep disorders completed a questionnaire about nightmares. RESULTS: About 20% of the sample indicated an interest in more information about nightmare etiology and nightmare therapy-even patients who had never sought professional help previously. CONCLUSIONS: From a clinical viewpoint, health care professional

Non-inflammatory Causes of Pain in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Although pain in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is frequently thought to be inflammatory in nature, the association between measures of inflammation and pain intensity is low. This observation is likely due to the multifactorial nature of pain. In addition to pain from joint inflammation, RA patients may also have pain due to structural damage or central etiologies, such as aberrancies in the central nervous system (CNS) pain regulatory pathways. These CNS pathways include mechanisms that facilitate pain, as well as mechanisms that inhibit pain. Other factors, such as sleep disturbances, depression

Establishing a Role for Polysomnography in Hospitalized Children.

BACKGROUND: Children with medical complexity have a high prevalence of sleep disorders. However, outpatient polysomnography to evaluate for these conditions may be difficult to perform because of lack of skilled nursing care. The aim of this study was to explore polysomnography indications in hospitalized children and assess its impact on patient care. METHODS: Data from 85 inpatient polysomnographies of 70 children hospitalized between March and December 2014 were retrospectively collected. RESULTS: Sixty percent of patients were boys with ages 6.5 ± 6 years. Chronic respiratory failure was
