It's Not Nature versus Nurture; It's Neural Networks: Adverse Childhood Experiences and Attachment Disruption as Neurodevelopmental Causes of Adult Mental Illness and Addiction.

Neuroscience continues to uncover anatomical, mechanistic, and etiological linkages between mental illness and addiction. The neurodevelopmental pathogenesis of these often intertwined brain disorders is contributed to by both genetic and experiential-causal events. This article introduces the term ecocausatypes to describe traumatically adverse experiences and attachment disruptions that are biologically potent on par with genes, and highly interactive with genetics in causing psychiatric and addiction phenotypes. Neural network theory explains how genotypes and ecocausatypes are biologically

Aging in Schizophrenia: Clinical, Biological, and Psychosocial Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder traditionally associated with early adulthood; however, an increasing number of individuals are now reaching older age, highlighting the need to better understand the aging process in this population. Emerging evidence suggests that schizophrenia may be associated with accelerated aging, characterized by an earlier onset of age-related conditions and increased vulnerability to physical and cognitive decline. Methods: We provide an integrative overview of aging in schizophrenia, focusing on biological mechanisms, clinical ma

Robust integrated multi-modal network design for green petroleum distribution under uncertainty.

Globally, a significant volume of petroleum products is transported daily through logistic networks to meet diverse regional demands, where unreliable or delayed delivery can lead to serious economic, social, and political consequences. The primary contribution of this research is the development of a comprehensive, robust multi-period mathematical model for the integrated planning of a green multi-modal petroleum product logistic network. This model advances current frameworks by simultaneously integrating pipeline, rail, and road transportation; synchronizing strategic facility development w

Socio-economic influences from egg to exit: Emerging biology.

Socio-economic status (SES) impacts life-long health from early development to old age. We review SES differences in biological factors that begin before fertilization and extend into later life, 'egg to exit'. SES gradients are shown in onset and prevalence of chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia, leading up to a 15-year difference in life expectancy in some countries. Our analysis is limited to high-income countries and does not include detailed discussion of gender or ethnic differences. We develop a comprehensive multi-disciplinary framework for SES gr

Stress Urinary Incontinence as a Chronic Stress Model: Clinical Evidence and Emerging Epigenetic Implications for Mental Disorders.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is conventionally viewed as a peripheral mechanical disorder, yet its psychological burden suggests that a broader biopsychosocial interpretation may be warranted. This perspective considers whether recurrent leakage, anticipatory anxiety, behavioural avoidance, and social evaluative threat may allow SUI to function as a chronic psychosocial stressor. It integrates clinical observations with established concepts in stress physiology, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation, allostatic load, inflammation, and stress-related epigenetic mechanisms, i

Kinship, favors, and officer integrity: exploring wasta in Kuwait's National Police Force.

INTRODUCTION: Wasta, a culturally ingrained practice of favoritism prevalent in Arab culture, presents significant challenges to governance and organizational integrity in the Middle East. However, empirical research on its role in policing - an area notoriously tied to its use - is extremely scarce. This study proposes a framework explaining the elements that perpetuate wasta and examines officers' attitudes toward the practice. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed. Survey data were collected from 199 officers to identify correlates of attitudes toward wasta, and semi-structured inte

Dual Perspectives: A Nurse-Patient's Lived Experience Informing Holistic Perioperative Care and Rehabilitation for Acoustic Neuroma.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic neuroma (AN), or vestibular schwannoma, accounts for 8% to 10% of intracranial neoplasms and 80% of cerebellopontine angle tumors. Postoperative vestibular symptoms are common, yet research has largely failed to integrate the perspectives of both health care providers and patients. METHOD: This case report documents the perioperative experiences of a nurse diagnosed with AN, including psychological changes, symptom progression, and rehabilitation, from a dual nurse-patient perspective. RESULTS: The patient presented with vertigo and an unsteady gait and was diagnosed wit

Is it time to introduce health coaching in inflammatory bowel disease management?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic, relapsing-remitting condition with profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Conventional therapies are essential for controlling intestinal inflammation but often fail to address behavioral and motivational dimensions critical for adherence, stress management, and quality of life. Health Coaching has emerged as a patient-centered intervention that fosters self-efficacy, resilience, and sustainable behavior change. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on Health Coaching in chronic disease management and explores its potent

Ageing, clinical complexity, and exercise therapy: a multidimensional approach.

Ageing is a multidimensional concept related to the progressive decline in physiological functions. The decrease of physical autonomy due to the ageing process leads to frailty, which in turn is associated with disability and comorbidity. Ageing represents the primary risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases, especially involving cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, and osteoarticular systems, determining the decrease in activities and quality of daily life. Regular physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of chronic degenerative diseases, moderate or severe functional limit

A Network Analysis of Negative Affect and Risky Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Negative affect is a well-established risk factor for problematic drinking, but little is known about how specific emotional and behavioral symptoms interact. Network analysis provides a framework to examine these symptom-level connections. OBJECTIVES: This study explored (1) the network of negative affect symptoms, (2) the network of risky alcohol use behaviors, and (3) the integrated network linking the two domains. METHODS: Data came from 13,250 adults in the 19th wave of the Korean Welfare Panel Study. Seven negative affect and seven risky drinking items were analyzed using a

Structural Racism, Geographies of Opportunity, and Maternal Health Inequities: A Dynamic Conceptual Framework.

Addressing the grave racial inequities in maternal health requires a new generation of research that better operationalizes root causes of these outcomes. Recent frameworks improving the conceptualization of structural racism have illuminated the need for better conceptual clarity when investigating neighborhoods as a site of structural marginalization for Black birthing populations as well. In particular, better conceptualization of dynamic feedback in how neighborhoods are constructed and experienced, especially as they embed vicious cycles of place-based racialization, is integral to produc

When a Woman's Heart Fails to Contain: Takotsubo Syndrome as a Gendered Collapse of Emotional Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS), or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is an acute and typically reversible cardiac condition that mimics acute coronary syndrome without obstructive coronary artery disease. Predominantly affecting postmenopausal women, TTS has been increasingly recognized as a psychobiological disorder involving neuroendocrine dysregulation, autonomic imbalance, psychosocial stress, and gendered patterns of emotional regulation. This review aimed to synthesize multidisciplinary evidence to propose an integrative, gender-informed model of TTS. METHODS: A narrative literature

Biofeedback-Based Proprioceptive Training to Improve Functional Prerequisites of Dragon Boating in Breast Cancer Survivors.

Breast cancer (BC)-related sequelae drastically impact the psychophysical functioning and quality of life of affected women. Adapted physical activity (APA) has proved to effectively counteract these impairments in a non-medicalized framework. In particular, dragon boats are able to promote body functionality, social interaction, and quality of life in BC survivors, but the literature on specific motor gestures is scarce and practice is still based more on a re-educative perspective than a performative one. In this context, the present longitudinal study investigated the benefits of an adapted

Discipline and punishment in panoptical public goods games.

In Public Goods Games (PGG), the temptation to free-ride on others' contributions poses a significant threat to the sustainability of cooperative societies. Therefore, societies strive to mitigate this through incentive systems, employing rewards and punishments to foster cooperative behavior. Thus, peer punishment, in which cooperators sanction defectors, as well as pool punishment, where a centralized punishment institution executes the punishment, is deeply analyzed in previous works. Although the literature indicates that these methods may enhance cooperation on social dilemmas under parti
