Decision-making deficits linked to real-life social dysfunction in crack cocaine-dependent individuals.

Crack cocaine-dependent individuals (CCDI) present abnormalities in both social adjustment and decision making, but few studies have examined this association. This study investigated cognitive and social performance of 30 subjects (CCDI × controls); CCDI were abstinent for 2 weeks. We used the Social Adjustment Scale (SAS), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Disadvantageous choices on the IGT were associated with higher levels of social dysfunction in CCDI, suggesting the ecological validity of the IGT. Social dysfunction and decision making may be linked to the

Repetitive self-mutilation among Japanese eating disorder patients with drug use disorder: comparison with patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

Repetitive self-mutilation and drug use disorder are less prevalent in Japan, although the prevalence of eating disorder is comparable with rates in Western countries. However, repetitive self-mutilation has not previously been described in relation to eating disorder and drug use disorder in Japan. Subjects consisted of 19 patients with eating disorders and drug use disorders (ED+DUD) and 12 patients with methamphetamine use disorders (MAP). Subjects were drawn from 180 patients who were referred because of eating disorders and 22 patients who were referred because of methamphetamine-related

[Pregnancy and substance dependency].

Substance dependency in pregnancy leads to severe health risks for the expecting mother and for the foetus and the new-born. The problem of substance dependent pregnant women lies not only in the use of illegal substances but also to a high degree in the use of legal substances such as alcohol and nicotine. In contrast to most other substances of abuse, opioids do not show cytotoxic or teratogenic characteristics. The primary goal should be the stabilisation of the patient and a reduction of additional illicit consumption. The ideal goal of abstinence is difficult to reach and often puts the w

Predictive validity of bulimia nervosa as a diagnostic category.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to investigate the predictive validity of bulimia nervosa as a diagnostic category. METHOD: More than 10 years after they appeared as patients with bulimia nervosa, 177 women (participation rate=79.7%) completed follow-up assessments. RESULTS: Among the women with a current eating pathology, most engaged in recurrent binge eating and purging. Anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder were relatively uncommon. Eating disorder outcome was significantly related to the presence of mood, substance use, and impulse control disorders but not to the presence of anxiety

Integrating forensic pathology and toxicology for in-depth analysis of performance-enhancing substance misuse: Insights into injury, death, and broader implications.

The death of a non-professional bodybuilder with a history of performance-enhancing drug (PED) use was thoroughly investigated. At the decedent's residence, investigators found four boxes of methylprednisolone tablets, one galenic preparation of sibutramine, and two unlabelled galenic compounds. Blood and hair samples were collected during autopsy. Toxicological analysis revealed the presence of methylprednisolone (19 ng/mL), methandrostenolone (27 ng/mL), and sibutramine (29 ng/mL) in blood. Hair analysis confirmed sibutramine (80 pg/mg) and methandrostenolone (1.28 ng/mg). GC-MS analysis of

HIV surveillance among injecting drug users.

Injecting drug users (IDUs) should be considered a 'partially hidden population' at high risk for HIV infection. In almost all locations it should be possible to locate and conduct research with IDUs, but it will probably never be possible to enumerate or draw random samples from an IDU population. Surveillance research studies with IDUs should include risk behaviors, as surveillance of HIV infection only will not be sufficiently time sensitive, and be used to develop and refine HIV prevention programming for the population. Contacts with IDUs can be developed at multiple settings, including v

Anxiety and the brain: Neuropeptides as emerging factors.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by intense feelings of worry and fear, which can significantly interfere with daily functioning. Current treatment options primarily include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepine anxiolytics, gabapentinoids, and beta-blockers. Neuropeptides have shown an important role in the regulation of complex behaviours, such as psychopathology and anxiety-related reactions. Neuropeptides have a great deal of promise to advance our understanding of and ability to help people with anxiety disorders. This review focuses on the expand

Time-based prospective memory predicts engagement in risk behaviors among substance users: results from clinical and nonclinical samples.

Deficits in prospective memory (PM; i.e., enacting previously learned actions at the right occasion) and risky decision-making (i.e., making choices with a high chance of undesirable/dangerous outcomes) are both common among individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Previous research has raised the possibility of a specific relationship between PM and risk-taking, and the present study aimed to systematically study if PM provides unique variance in the prediction of risky decision-making. Two samples were included: (1) a group of 45 individuals with SUD currently in treatment, and (2) a

Alcohol and drug disorders among physically abusive and neglectful parents in a community-based sample.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency of substance use disorders and symptoms between adults reporting child physical abuse or neglect and individually matched control subjects in a community sample. METHODS: In a nested case-control study, 169 adults reporting physical abuse of a child and 209 adults reporting neglect of a child from 11,662 individuals successfully interviewed in a probabilistic survey in four communities were individually matched with control subjects drawn from the participants. Case subjects were compared with control subjects on the number of

High-risk profiles for polysubstance use among veterans: Associations of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and sexual assault in a clinical cohort.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are prevalent among military veterans, with severe substance use and polysubstance use disorder (poly-SUD) related to worse clinical outcomes. Although the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and SUD is well established in veterans, less is known about how other common psychiatric conditions (e.g., major depressive disorder [MDD], generalized anxiety disorder [GAD]) or traumatic exposures (e.g., sexual assault) may collectively affect SUD severity and poly-SUD. The current study examined the association between MDD, GAD, and sexual assault histo

A network analysis of Hurricane Maria-related traumatic stress and substance use among Puerto Rican youth.

Youth exposed to natural disasters are at risk of developing trauma-related symptoms as well as engaging in substance use. Although previous research has established associations between disaster-related stressors and substance use in youth, less has focused on how symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may underpin this association. The current study used network analysis to identify specific PTSD symptoms associated with substance use following a natural disaster. Participants were 91,732 youths (Grades 3-12) from across Puerto Rico who completed a needs assessment 5-9 months after

Use of machine learning to examine disparities in completion of substance use disorder treatment.

The objective of this work is to examine disparities in the completion of substance use disorder treatment in the U.S. Our data is from the Treatment Episode Dataset Discharge (TEDS-D) datasets from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for 2017-2019. We apply a two-stage virtual twins model (random forest + decision tree) where, in the first stage (random forest), we determine differences in treatment completion probability associated with race/ethnicity, income source, no co-occurrence of mental health disorders, gender (biological), no health insurance,

Alternative model for personality disorders and drug use among the homeless individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This article aims to examine the contribution of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in relation to social exclusion and substance use. Indeed, numerous studies converge in highlighting a higher prevalence of personality disorders and substance use among homeless individuals. Since its publication in 2013 the DSM-5 has proposed an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, allowing for an assessment of personality based on two criteria: the level of personality functioning (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B). The tools developed for

Assessing measurement bias in substance use disorder criteria associated with childhood adversity and genetic liability.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis and severity of substance use disorders (SUDs) are classified by the number of criteria endorsed. However, environmental and genetic factors may influence criterion endorsement. To evaluate this, we tested for differential item functioning of SUDs criteria by adverse childhood events (ACEs) and SUD polygenic scores. METHOD: In 10,275 Yale-Penn participants (Mage = 40.59 years, 56.2% male, 47.21% of African-like genetic ancestry, 52.79% of European-like genetic ancestry), we used item response theory models to estimate difficulty and discrimination parameters for each

An investigation of fentanyl and methamphetamine use among first-time arrestees from 25 county jails across the U.S. in 2023.

Widespread use of fentanyl in combination with methamphetamine in carceral settings presents unique health risks and public health challenges. To contribute to continued efforts to understand drug use among first-time arrestees, this study characterizes the nature and extent of urine drug screenings (UDS) positive for fentanyl and/or methamphetamine among first-time arrestees receiving healthcare in 25 jails across the U.S. This study used the same data source, data extraction, sample selection, and UDS variables as those reported by Schumacher et al. (2025) and a similar data analytic strateg

Benzodiazepines and Opioid co-use Among Rural People Who Use Drugs: Findings From the Rural Opioid Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines and opioids are among the most frequently misused psychoactive substances, but their patterns of co-use (polysubstance use) in rural areas are unclear. As resources to address substance use are disproportionally scarce in rural areas, a better understanding of this polysubstance use is critical to allocate and direct interventions. METHODS: The Rural Opioid Initiative comprises 8 research cohorts spanning 10 states and 65 rural counties. Participants were recruited from January 2018 to March 2020 and eligibility included past 30-day opioid use by any route or past

Contingency Management for Stimulant Use Disorder and Association With Mortality: A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: While opioid overdose has begun to decrease in recent years, stimulant overdose has continued to increase and has not been adequately addressed. Unlike opioid use disorder, there are no medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat stimulant use disorder (StUD). The most effective treatment is contingency management (CM), a behavioral intervention that provides tangible rewards to reinforce target behaviors, such as biochemically verified abstinence. Despite the effectiveness of CM on near-term substance use behaviors, the long-term impact on key outcomes su

Moving Beyond Referrals: Addressing Multilevel Barriers to Substance Use Treatment Engagement Through Police-Led Recovery Management Check-Ups.

The opioid epidemic in the United States (US) has prompted innovative responses from law enforcement agencies including specialized units to refer overdose survivors to substance use treatment following an overdose. However, traditional law enforcement outreach does not address the multilevel barriers to treatment engagement that lead to repeat overdose-related calls for service. The current evaluation explored the process components and outcomes of a Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program (COAP) initiative within a local law enforcement agency in the Southeast US. COAP funding supported a police-

Another Round: Influence of Alcohol-Related Conditions and Other Drug Use-Related Disorders in Emergency Department Frequent Use - A Single-Site Matched Case-Control Study in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who make 5 or more visits per year to hospital emergency departments (EDs) are usually considered ED frequent users (FUs). This study aims to better characterize the influence of alcohol and other drug use-related disorders in this phenomenon in a European Mediterranean country with public, universal, tax-financed healthcare system. METHODS: Matched case-control study. Cases were adults between 18 and 65 years old who consulted 5 or more times the ED of a tertiary hospital in Spain between December 2018 and November 2019. Each case was assigned a control of the same age
