Feline transfusion medicine. Blood types and their clinical importance.

Anemia is the most common indications for a blood transfusion in cats and fresh whole blood is typically administered. Recent experimental studies and clinical reports have elucidated the importance of feline blood types in transfusion medicine. The AB blood group system, the only recognized feline blood group system, consists of three blood types: type A is most common, type B is frequently found in certain breeds, and type AB occurs rarely. The blood type frequently varies geographically among domestic shorthair cats and between breeds. Because of the presence of naturally occurring alloanti

A single major-gene defect underlying cardiac conotruncal malformations interferes with myocardial growth during embryonic development: studies in the CTD line of keeshond dogs.

The common forms of isolated congenital heart disease are usually not inherited in a Mendelian pattern, and most are considered multifactorial threshold traits. A large subset consisting of a group of malformations of the ventricular outflow region, termed "conotruncal defects" (CTDs), include subarterial ventricular septal defects, tetralogy of Fallot, and persistent truncus arteriosus. Similar aggregations of CTDs have been reported in human families and in the keeshond breed of dog. The results of our early breeding experiments utilizing noninbred keeshonds were not consistent with any hypo…

An epidemiological survey of dog bites presenting to the emergency department of a children's hospital.

German shepherds are the most popular registered breed of dog in South Australia, but are also the most hazardous to children, biting more often and more severely. A study of the victims of dog bites presenting to the Emergency Department of the Adelaide Children's Hospital over an 18 month period revealed that, although many breeds were involved, only German shepherds were implicated more frequently than their prevalence in the community. Attacks occurred most often in a domestic setting involving a friendly dog that was known to the victim. Boys were more often bitten than girls and children

[Comparative techniques for the diagnosis of rabies and its incidence in Tamaulipas in 1987].

Rabies in suspect cases was diagnosed by immunofluorescence, histopathology and biological tests in samples from government health centers i … s. During spring, an increase of positive samples were received possibly associated with the canine breeding season. Urban rabies is a real problem in Tamaulipas, expressed by 97.7% of positive canine samples, 63.6% males and 36.3% females of an average age of fifteen months and were primarily of native breeds. Only 22% of positive cases had been previousl …

Epidemiologic study of canine blastomycosis in Wisconsin.

An epidemiologic study was designed to investigate the increasing number of cases of canine blastomycosis being reported in Wisconsin. From January 1980 through July 1982, 200 cases of canine blastomycosis from 39 Wisconsin counties were examined to assess epidemiologic and environmental aspects of this disease. Based on a survey of 176 dog owners, principal disease characteristics for canine blastomycosis were anorexia, lethargy, shortness of breath, chronic cough, and weight loss. The greatest number of cases of canine blastomycosis was in the northwest, north central, northeast, central, an

Sheep consumption: a possible source of spongiform encephalopathy in humans.

A fatal spongiform encephalopathy of sheep and goats (scrapie) shares many characteristics with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a similar dementing illness of humans. To investigate the possibility that CJD is acquired by ingestion of contaminated sheep products, we collected information on production, slaughtering practices, and marketing of sheep in Pennsylvania. The study revealed that sheep were usually marketed before central nervous system signs of scrapie are expected to appear; breeds known to be susceptible to the disease were the most common breeds raised in the area; sheep were imp

Dynamic changes in the hindgut bacterial community of pre-weaning crossbred beef calves in a pasture-based system.

The early-life gut microbiome represents a window during which microbial alterations may impact long-term health and productivity. However, most research has focused on confined dairy systems with limited breed variation. To address this gap, we examined bacterial community dynamics in pasture-raised South Poll × Angus and Angus cow-calf pairs (n = 7). Fecal samples were collected from calves at birth and weekly through 8 weeks, with dam's samples collected post-calving. DNA was extracted from fecal samples, and bacterial communities were profiled using the V1-V2 region of the 16S rRNA gene. A

Farm-to-fork changes in poultry microbiomes and resistomes in Maputo City, Mozambique.

UNLABELLED: Increasing demand for poultry has spurred poultry production in low- and middle-income countries like Mozambique. Poultry may be an important source of foodborne, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to consumers in settings with limited water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. The Chicken Exposures and Enteric Pathogens in Children Exposed through Environmental Pathways (ChEEP ChEEP) study was conducted in Maputo City, Mozambique from 2019 to 2021 to quantify enteric pathogen exposures along the supply chain for commercial and local (i.e., scavenger) chicken breeds. Here, we per

Effect of heat stress on milk production, rectal temperature, respiratory rate and blood chemistry in Holstein, Jersey and Australian Milking Zebu cows.

The effect of heat stress on changes in milk production, rectal temperature, respiratory rate and blood chemistry was evaluated in three groups of six mature Holstein, Jersey and Australian Milking Zebu (AMZ) dairy cows. These animals were subjected to a cool environment when the mean temperature-humidity index (THI) was 72+/-1.4 (dry bulb temperature of 22.2-24.4 degrees C and relative humidity of 100-60%) during the month of December. This experiment was repeated during the hotter month of July of the following year, when the mean THI was 93+/-3.1 (dry bulb temperature of 35.6-43.9 degrees C

Detection and duration of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in semen, serum, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and tissues from Yorkshire, Hampshire, and Landrace boars.

Because transmission of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) can occur through boar semen, it is important to identify persistently infected boars. However, even for boars given the same PRRSV strain and dose, variability in the duration of viral shedding in semen has been observed, suggesting that host factors are involved in PRRSV persistence. To determine whether there are host genetic factors, particularly litter and breed differences related to the persistence of PRRSV, 3 litters from 3 purebred swine breeds were used for this study. It was also determined whether P

Veterinarians' attitudes towards the treatment and surgical management of brachycephalic dogs - a survey among small animal veterinarians in Austria.

BACKGROUND: The rising popularity of flat-faced dog breeds has intensified discussions around brachycephaly and its associated health risks. The structural shortening of the skull coupled with a lack of a concurrent reduction in the volume of the soft tissues in these breeds often results in chronic health issues, notably Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which remains incurable but may be alleviated through corrective surgical interventions. In light of these challenges, veterinarians are increasingly called upon to provide informed guidance and support to pet owners navigati

Molecular epidemiology and characterization of goose polyomavirus in China: insights into its impact on hatchability and susceptibility to co-infections.

INTRODUCTION: Goose hemorrhagic polyomavirus (GHPV) is the primary etiological agent of goose hemorrhagic nephritis and enteritis (HGNE), a disease causing substantial economic losses to the global waterfowl industry. Despite documented outbreaks in Europe and Asia, integrated molecular epidemiological evidence linking clinical outbreaks, co-infections, and viral phylogeny remains limited. METHODS: We conducted nationwide epidemiological surveillance across eight provinces in China from March 2023 to April 2025, covering 83 farms and 1,902 samples. An outbreak of reduced hatchability was inve

Genomic evaluation for cow wellness traits in crossbred and purebred Holsteins and Jersey cattle.

The growing adoption of crossbred populations by dairy farmers has sparked increased interest in multibreed genomic evaluation, which offers promising opportunities to accelerate genetic progress and refine breeding strategies. This study assessed the feasibility of applying single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) for multibreed genomic evaluation of cow wellness traits in Holstein (HO), Jersey (JE) and their crosses (HO × JE). The traits considered were abortion (ABRT), cystic ovaries (CYST), displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis (KETO), lameness (LAME), mastitis (MAST), metr…

Integrated pathological and molecular characterisation of respiratory disease in extensively reared Sicilian Black pigs: detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, porcine circovirus type 2, and concurrent pulmonary silicosis.

The Sicilian Black pig is a well-adapted autochthonous breed, yet its susceptibility to respiratory disease remains poorly defined due to limited data on pathogen circulation and lesion patterns in extensive production systems. This study characterised the pathological features of Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC) in this breed by examining lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes from 59 animals through pathological assessment, molecular detection of major respiratory pathogens, and evaluation of crystalline particulates using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive

Rare phenotypes of white coat color in Simmental calves: genetic causes of syndromic forms of albinism and depigmentation.

The aim of this study was to investigate three unrelated Simmental calves with atypical white coat color, identify potential genetic causes using a trio-based whole-genome sequencing approach, and assess the prevalence of the identified variants in the breed. Several inherited alleles affecting coat color, ranging from fawn to red spotted and white-headed, have been described in Simmental cattle originating from Switzerland. However, no genetic variant has yet been associated with an almost completely white coat in this breed. Clinical examination revealed different syndromic disorders of whit

Study of correlations between serum taurine, thyroid hormones and echocardiographic parameters of systolic function in clinically healthy Golden retrievers fed with commercial diet.

Taurine deficiency predisposes to the development of nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy and is widespread in dogs fed with non-traditional diets. However, Golden retrievers show lower plasma taurine concentration and an impaired systolic function compared to breeds of the same size and morphotype. For these reasons, it can be difficult to classify a subject from a cardiological point of view, with the risk of considering as pathological characteristics that can be completely normal in this breed. This is a cross-sectional multicenter study. The aims were 1) to identify breed-specific range of

Live attenuated goatpox vaccination in pregnant Murcia-Granada goats: dosage implications and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases, particularly the Goatpox virus (GTPV) from the Poxviridae family, significantly impact livestock health and agricultural economies, especially in developing regions. Recent GTPV outbreaks in previously eradicated areas underscore the need for effective control measures, with vaccination being the most reliable strategy. This study investigates the effects of administering standard and double doses of live attenuated goatpox vaccine in pregnant Murcia-Granada goats, a non-native breed in Iran, to determine optimal vaccination protocols. RESULTS: In 2018, 400 he
