On the ultrastructure of mast cells and globule leucocytes in the common bile duct of cattle chronically infected with fasciola hepatica.

Mast cells and globule leucocytes in the walls of the common bile ducts of seven uninfected slaughtered cows and of five cows chronically infected with Fasciola hepatica were studied by electron microscopy. The mast cells displayed numerous small intracytoplasmic granules, the matrixes of which were either strongly electron-opaque and homogeneous or less dense with a fine-granular ultrastructure. Unattached ribosomes were abundant in the cytoplasm of the cells. Many mast cells in the walls of chronically infected bile ducts were normal-looking while the cells in the subepithelial tissues often

Efficacy of four commercially available multivalent modified-live virus vaccines against clinical disease, viremia, and viral shedding in early-weaned beef calves exposed simultaneously to cattle persistently infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus and cattle acutely infected with bovine herpesvirus 1.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of 4 commercially available multivalent modified-live virus vaccines against clinical disease, viremia, … 0], D [11], and E [11]). Forty-five days after vaccination, calves were exposed simultaneously to 6 cattle persistently infected with BVDV and 8 calves acutely infected with BHV1 for 28 days (challenge exposure). For each calf, serum antibody titers against BVDV and BHV1 were determined before vaccination and before and after challenge exposure. Virus is …

Effects of Rumen-Protected β-Alanine on Hepatic Gluconeogenesis-Related Indices and Muscle Energy Metabolism in Transported Cattle.

Preslaughter nutritional strategies that preserve energy reserves in transported beef cattle may help maintain normal post-mortem muscle metabolism and meat quality. β-alanine, a carnosine precursor, enhances glucose metabolism and glycogen reserves. This study evaluated the effects of rumen-protected β-alanine (RP-β-Ala) on meat quality, hepatic gluconeogenesis-related indices, and muscle energy metabolism in long-distance transported cattle. Thirty-six healthy 18-month-old Simmental crossbred bulls (627 ± 41 kg) were randomly assigned diets containing 0 (control) or 96 g/head/d RP-β-Ala. Aft…

Stakeholder perspectives on biosecurity adoption in the Colorado cattle supply chain: lessons from foot-and-mouth disease preparedness.

Biosecurity is essential to protecting cattle health and maintaining continuity of business during high-consequence disease events, yet adoption of preparedness measures remains uneven across the beef supply chain. Using foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) as a motivating case, we examine how Colorado cattle-industry stakeholders define practical biosecurity and what lessons support preparedness before an emergency. Data were collected through 12 focus groups and 18 individual interviews with 75 stakeholders across nine cattle-industry sectors, followed by four cross-sector workshops with 56 particip…

Effect of physically effective fiber on animal growth performance, carcass characteristics, digestibility, and rumination in finishing beef cattle.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of altering dietary peNDF concentration by modifying forage particle size on di … id not affect growth performance, rumination behavior, or carcass characteristics in finishing beef cattle, but may reduce NDF digestibility.

Whole-genome sequencing reveals genomic diversity and selection signatures for adaptation in South African Afrikaner and Bonsmara cattle.

The indigenous Afrikaner and composite Bonsmara cattle breeds are hardy and adapted to the diverse South African climate and biomes. Both breeds have been successfully used in the South African stud and commercial industries. This study explored the genomic diversity and population structure, as well as identified selection signatures within and between the Afrikaner and Bonsmara breeds with a focus on signatures related to adaptation traits. Short-read whole genome sequencing data of 42 Afrikaner and 43 Bonsmara cattle were analysed. Diversity analysis revealed comparable nucleotide diversity…

Short-Term Longitudinal Biometric Identification of Cattle Using Planum Nasolabiale Images and a Two-Stage Deep Learning Framework.

Individual cattle identification is essential for traceability and precision livestock management, but conventional identifiers may be lost or damaged. This study evaluated a non-invasive biometric framework based on PN images. A two-stage pipeline combined a YOLOv12n detector for muzzle localization with an ImageNet-pretrained EfficientNetB0 classifier for individual identification. Forty-eight cattle (32 adult cows and 16 calves) were photographed on 31 January 2025 (T0) and again on 11 June 2025 (T1), a 131-day interval. Four images per animal were obtained at each session, producing 384 lo…

Detection of viruses associated with bovine respiratory disease complex in samples collected from Albanian cattle during 2022/2023.

The bovine respiratory disease complex causes significant morbidity and mortality with numerous aetiological agents known to contribute to its development, including several bacteria and viruses. In Albania, there is limited information on the prevalence or genetic makeup of viral bovine respiratory disease complex pathogens, which limits mitigation strategies and effective responses such as targeted vaccination against circulating viruses. Nasal or pulmonary samples were collected from cattle in 2022/2023, and then, PCR of bovine Betacoronavirus gravedinis (BoCoV) and Orthopneumovirus bovis (…

Understanding the diagnostic tests and challenges in host genetic selection against Johne's disease in New Zealand dairy cattle.

Johne's disease (JD) is a common endemic gastrointestinal disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). With no effective treatment or vaccine preventing infection, control is currently based on the identification of infected animals and prevention of the spread of infection. The aim of this review is to critically assess the diagnostic tests currently used to detect MAP infection in NZ dairy cattle and to evaluate the current understanding of the host's genetics in preventing the disease. Multiple diagnostic tests for MAP infection, such as ELISA and fa…
