Analysis of Gender-Dependent Personal Protective Behaviors in a National Sample: Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study.

During the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the basic strategy that is recommended to reduce the spread of the disease is to practice proper hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors, but among adolescents, low adherence is common. The present study aimed to assess the gender-dependent hand hygiene and personal protective behaviors in a national sample of Polish adolescents. The Polish Adolescents' COVID-19 Experience (PLACE-19) Study was conducted in a group of 2323 secondary school students (814 males, 1509 females). Schools were chosen based on the random quota sampling proc

The effect of lockdown regulations on SARS-CoV-2 infectivity in Gauteng Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: On 26 March 2020, the South African (SA) government initiated a 21-day national level 5 lockdown which was subsequently eased off and downgraded to level 4 on 1 May and to level 3 on 1 June. The effect of lockdown measures on SARS-CoV-2 infectivity is currently uncertain. In this article, we analyse the effects of the lockdown measures on the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in one of the epicentres in SA. OBJECTIVES: To measure the effects of lockdown measures introduced in SA on SARS-CoV-2 attack rates (ARs, the percentage of individuals who tested positive in a specified time period) in Gau

Decreasing HIV transmissions to African American women through interventions for men living with HIV post-incarceration: An agent-based modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Incarceration and HIV disproportionately impact African American communities. The mass incarceration of African American men is hypothesized to increase HIV acquisition risk for African American women. Interventions optimizing HIV care engagement and minimizing sexual risk behaviors for men living with HIV post-incarceration may decrease HIV incidence. METHODS: Using an agent-based model, we simulated a sexual and injection drug using network representing the African American population of Philadelphia. We compared intervention strategies for men living with HIV post-incarceration

Contrasting Transmission Dynamics of Co-endemic Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum: Implications for Malaria Control and Elimination.

BACKGROUND: Outside of Africa, P. falciparum and P. vivax usually coexist. In such co-endemic regions, successful malaria control programs have a greater impact on reducing falciparum malaria, resulting in P. vivax becoming the predominant species of infection. Adding to the challenges of elimination, the dormant liver stage complicates efforts to monitor the impact of ongoing interventions against P. vivax. We investigated molecular approaches to inform the respective transmission dynamics of P. falciparum and P. vivax and how these could help to prioritize public health interventions. METHO

Preventing tuberculosis in the foreign-born population of Canada: a mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born persons in Canada contribute 67% of all tuberculosis (TB) cases annually, but represent only 21% of the total population. Molecular epidemiological studies suggest that most foreign-born TB cases result from the reactivation of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) acquired before immigration. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect on incidence of a prevention strategy that would screen selected immigrants at arrival for LTBI and offer preventive treatment to those who test positive. DESIGN: A deterministic model was developed to quantify the incidence of active TB in immig

A follow-up study of Opisthorchis viverrini infection after the implementation of control program in a rural community, central Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini infection is still one of the public health problems in Thailand. Our recent cohort study conducted in a rural community in central Thailand showed that the incidence rate of O. viverrini infection in 2002-2004 was 21.6/100 person-years. Conventional control activities including case diagnosis and treatment, hygienic defecation promotion and health education focusing on avoiding raw fish consumption was implemented. This study aimed to re-assess the status of infection after implementation of intervention programs, using both quantitative and qualitative meth

Certified athletic trainers' knowledge of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and common disinfectants.

CONTEXT: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are increasingly common in athletic settings. The MRSA knowledge and infection-control practices of certified athletic trainers (ATs) and the cleanliness of the athletic training room are important factors in preventing MRSA infections. OBJECTIVE: To assess knowledge of MRSA and the use of common disinfectants among ATs and to explore their infection-control practices. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: High school and collegiate athletic training rooms. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 163 ATs from Natio

Cultural case management of latent tuberculosis infection.

SETTING: The proportion of tuberculosis (TB) among foreign-born individuals in the United States is steadily increasing. Treatment of latent TB infection can prevent future cases of disease, although generally only 60% of patients who start a 6-month regimen of isoniazid complete therapy. OBJECTIVE: Cultural case management--employing case manager cultural mediators who serve patient-defined needs in addition to performing TB control functions--may improve results of testing and treatment in one high-risk group, new refugees. DESIGN: A cultural case management approach was established for fi

Surveillance of adverse events following immunisation: Australia, 2000-2002.

The Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee (ADRAC) database collates notifications of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) from across Australia. The data were analysed for vaccines received between 1 January 2000 and 30 September 2002. Dose-based AEFI reporting rates were calculated using denominator data from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register and annual national influenza vaccination coverage surveys. The majority of the 2,409 AEFI records analysed described non-serious events, principally injection site reactions; 10.5 per cent (n = 253) described AEFIs with outcomes

[International and regional standardization of immunoenzyme tests: methods, concerns and limitations].

Numerous attempts have been made to standardise immuno-enzyme techniques (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay: ELISA) used for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, in order to improve the reproducibility of the tests, expression of results, choice of a positive threshold, and selection of reference samples. The international standardisation of reagents and test protocols appears essential for quality control and the comparison of results between laboratories, but the interpretation of results can encounter major differences depending on the geographical sector under study. Based on these studie

The impact of the needle and syringe-exchange programme in Amsterdam on injecting risk behaviour.

We interviewed a group of 145 injecting drug users (IDUs) in Amsterdam about their drug use, participation in a needle-exchange programme and needle sharing. Approximately 1 year later 60 IDUs were followed up. IDUs who exchange regularly ('exchangers') are older, inject longer and are more often in contact with methadone programmes. Exchanging is associated neither with an increase in injecting nor with lending needles to other IDUs. The risk level of injecting of the exchangers is much lower than that of the non-exchangers. From this it can be concluded that a needle exchange is an effective

Non-traditional barriers to participation in pharmacologic chronic kidney disease clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: The Agenda for Sustainable Development agenda prioritizes access to care for non-communicable diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), and sustainable cities and communities. City-level health may impact local research capacity and subsequent participation in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We identified city-level barriers to CKD RCT participation in the cities from the Global Observatory of Healthy and Sustainable Cities (GOHSC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 214 drug CKD RCTs (2003–2023) with participants spanning 146 GOHSC sites. We queried open

Lifecourse body mass index trajectories and cardio-metabolic disease risk in Guatemalan adults.

Little is known about body size over the life-course and non-communicable disease risk in low- and middle-income country populations. Our study explored the role of body mass index (BMI) trajectories from infancy through mid-adulthood on cardio-metabolic disease (CMD) risk factors in a prospective cohort of Guatemalan adults. Study participants were born in Guatemala from 1962-77 and have been followed prospectively since participating in a nutrition supplementation trial as children. Sex-specific BMI latent class trajectories were derived using latent class growth modeling from up to 22 possi

The CREST-2 experience with the evolving challenges of COVID-19: A clinical trial in a pandemic.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has disrupted the lives of whole communities and nations. The multinational multicenter National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial stroke prevention trial rapidly experienced the effects of the pandemic and had to temporarily suspend new enrollments and shift patient follow-up activities from in-person clinic visits to telephone contacts. There is an ethical obligation to the patients to protect their health while taking every feasible step to ensure that

Sociodemographic factors associated with daily tobacco smoking and binge drinking among Zambians: evidence from the 2017 STEPS survey.

BACKGROUND: The burden of disease attributable to tobacco smoking and harmful alcohol consumption poses a major threat to sustainable development in most low- and middle-income countries. However, evidence on tobacco use and harmful alcohol consumption to inform context-specific interventions addressing these harmful social behaviours is limited in the African context. This study aimed to determine the sociodemographic factors associated with daily tobacco smoking and binge drinking in Zambia. METHODS: The study stems from nationwide population-based representative survey data collected using
