The aim of this study, which was carried out in the area of Monastir from September 1st to December 31, 1989 was to evaluate the incidence of and to identify the factors associated with low birth weight (LBW). The average LBW was 1,913 +/- 497 g (20% of the LBW neonates had a weight below 1,500 g). Factors associated with LBW were: extreme ages of the mothers, illiteracy, working class, previous history

Methods currently used for the control of anaplasmosis and babesiosis: their validity and proposals for future control strategies.

Four alternative approaches to the control of anaplasmosis and babesiosis as a complex of diseases are identified: no active control, tick control, immunization, and chemoprophylaxis. These methods may be utilized in one of five strategies: tick eradication with or without concurrent immunization, tick reduction with or without concurrent immunization or no active control. Factors influencing the choice of strategy are discussed.

Prevention of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. One billion people are infected with the tubercle bacillus, and there are 8 million new cases and 3 million deaths annually. Existing methods of preventing TB are effective, but due to economic and societal constraints, have not been applied throughout the world. Examples of primary prevention include case management and contact investigation, environmental control and vaccination. Secondary prevention is achieved by chemotherapy. The efficiency and use of these various methods will be reviewed, an

Sexually transmitted disease among women attending a family planning clinic in Zaria, Nigeria.

Three types of sexually transmitted infections were investigated among 150 family planning clients using different methods of contraception and 50 controls. For oral contraception, intrauterine contraceptive device, medroxyprogesterone acetate (depo-provera) and controls, the incidence of trichomonas was 0%, 6%, 8% and 4%; for gonorrhoea it was 0%, 8%, 2% and 6%; for syphilis it was 4%, 34%, 16% and 12%. Only the difference in prevalence of syphilis among intrauterine contraceptive users and control was statistically significant (P less than 0.3).

Maternal mortality at the Women's and Children's Hospital, South Okkalapa (1978-1982).

The maternal deaths between the years 1978 and 1982 were studied. There were 22,468 maternities and 10,623 abortion patients treated at the hospital. There were 44 maternal deaths; 22 due to abortion and 22 due to other causes. The maternal mortality rate including abortions was 1.33 per 1,000 maternities and that excluding abortions 0.98 per 1,000. The abortion was 2.0 per 1,000 abortions treated at the hospital. To reduce maternal mortality, ways and means should be found to reduce the abortion deaths, most of which were avoidable.

Typhoid fever complicated by intestinal perforation: a persisting fatal disease requiring surgical management.

In Bangladesh, clinical records of 323 patients with typhoid fever were reviewed to study the incidence, fatality, and optimal therapy of the complication of intestinal perforation. Fifteen patients (4.6%) developed intestinal perforation. Case-fatality rates were six of nine patients treated medically and one of four patients treated surgically for whom the postoperative courses were known. A literature review of 57,864 cases of typhoid fever in developing countries in the antibiotic era revealed that perforation developed in 2.5% of patients, a percentage that was similar to the incidence of…

[An example of the application of factorial analysis of correspondences to infant mortality and its prevention in a rural area of West Africa].

A retrospective study through questionnaire was made among over 800 women of a Pre-Sahel region of Mali. It confirmed the very high infant and child mortality in this population: over 250% mortality under 1 year of age and over 400% under 6 years of age. The factorial analysis of correspondences proved adequate to determine the main characteristics of the local mortality pattern. In chronological order, the most important causes are obstetrical factors (1st day of life), umbilical tetanus (1 week to 1 month of age), malaria (1 month to 1 year of age), pneumopathies (including pertussis and lun

Distribution - on or off prescription (of oral contraceptives)?

Restrictions on sale of oral contraceptives (OCs) in Australia are based on their classification as Schedule 4 poisons; as such they are "restricted substances" and obtainable only on a prescription. In general only a medical practitioner can prescribe OCs and only a chemist or a licensed person can dispense them. Doctors at Family Planning Clinics and Hospital Outpatient Departments may also supply OCs. There are arguments for and against a relaxation of restrictions controlling the distribution of OCs, many of these views were stated in submissions to the Royal Commission on Human Relationsh
