The acromion plate angle: a simple measurement to predict clinical outcomes after plate removal in proximal humerus fractures.

BACKGROUND: One-third of patients who undergo open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures require subsequent plate removal (PR). It is currently unclear which patients will benefit most from this procedure. Therefore, to support preoperative decision-making we sought to identify predictive factors of the clinical benefits of PR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with open reduction and internal fixation for proximal humerus fractures from 2014 to 2020 were recorded prospectively in an institutional register. All those with a 1-year follow-up were included in the study

Do Percutaneously Applied Medial Proximal Tibia Plates Need To Go Beneath the Pes Tendons?

BACKGROUND: Bicondylar tibial plateau fractures are often associated with significant soft tissue compromise making operative treatment challenging. Dual plating through a two-incision approach following temporary external fixation has been shown to improve complication rates although deep infection rates remain high. The objective was to evaluate early outcomes following a novel technique of percutaneous application of the medial plate superficial to the pes anserinus tendons. Indications for a percutaneous medial plate included local soft tissue conditions, lack of or minimal involvement of m

Flexible intramedullary nailing in the treatment of forearm fractures in children and adolescents, a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are common injuries among children and adolescents. Traditionally, they were managed conservatively with closed reduction and cast immobilization. The last decade there is an increasing trend towards operative treatment. The treatment modalities available include plate and screws, flexible intramedullary nailing and external fixation devices - rarely used nowadays. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the indications of flexible intramedullary nailing in the childhood population, to compare its results with plating and to provide detailed informatio

Improved Rotator Cuff Footprint Contact Characteristics With an Augmented Repair Construct Using Lateral Edge Fixation.

BACKGROUND: The transosseous-equivalent (TOE) rotator cuff repair construct has become the gold standard for the repair of medium and large rotator cuff tears. Repair failure, however, continues to be a problem. One contributing factor may be the inability of the TOE repair to replicate the native footprint contact characteristics during shoulder movement, especially in rotation. This results in higher strain across the repair, which leads to gapping and predisposes the construct to failure. In an effort to better reproduce the native compression forces throughout the footprint, an augmented T

Microorganism-mediated synergistic degradation of antibiotics in wastewater via dual-electric centers.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays a trade-off effect in the transformation of antibiotics. However, how to actively utilize DOC to facilitate antibiotic elimination in biofilter remains a challenge. We employed a dual-electric centers catalyst consisting of graphene-like carbon nitride complex Cu-doped Al2O3 on commercial alumina (GL-Cu-Al2O3/Alumina) in biofilter to treat multiple antibiotics in municipal wastewater without external energy. The biofilter achieved removal efficiencies of 74.6% for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and 96.4% for sulfadiazine (SDZ) alongside a 46.6% reduction in antibiotic

Comparison of patient- and parent-reported outcome measures in pediatric limb deformity patients as assessed by the Limb Deformity-Scoliosis Research Society Questionnaire.

The agreement - or lack thereof - between patient- and parent-reported limb deformity Scoliosis Research Society (LD-SRS) questionnaires has not been described. Proxy accuracy varies depending on the patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) used and patient population, with differences reported in zero, some, or all content subgroups. This prospective study compares patient- and parent-reported scores to understand where the LD-SRS falls on this continuum. We enrolled 24 subjects aged 11-18 years who had lower limb deformity surgery (11 internal nail lengthening, 6 osteotomy, 5 guided growth, a

Eggshell debridement combined with vascularized fibular grafting for the treatment of bilateral calcaneal osteomyelitis and bone defects: a case report.

Bone defect following debridement for calcaneal osteomyelitis presents both a clinical challenge to surgeons and a significant burden to patients. A 68-year-old male patient sustained multiple injuries, including bilateral calcaneal fractures, due to a fall from height. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for bilateral calcaneal fractures and left fibular fracture at an external institution. Two months postoperatively, sinus tracts developed at the bilateral incision sites, leading to a diagnosis of bilateral calcaneal infection. The patient subsequently received multiple

Proximal Tibial Giant Cell Tumor in a Skeletally Immature Child: A Diagnostic Dilemma and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm that primarily involves the epiphysis of long bones in skeletally mature individuals. It is extremely rare in skeletally immature patients. We report a rare case of proximal tibial GCT in a 7-year-old girl with a pathological fracture and metadiaphyseal extension, highlighting diagnostic considerations and long-term outcomes. CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old girl presented with pain, swelling, and deformity of the left upper leg following trivial trauma. Radiographs and non-contrast computed tomography scan demonst
