BACKGROUND: Our aim was to investigate the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in a prospective clinical study.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 36 eyes of 36 patients suffering from uncontrolled POAG, treatment was carried out with a frequency-doubled, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (532 nm). This paper is the first to report the benefits of CO2 laser treatment for pain control in severe oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). A CO2 laser device was used during 17 treatment sessions in four patients. The CO2 laser was applied over the mucosal lesions using 1 W for 2-3 s/1 mm(2). This treatment resulted in a consistent and significant decrease in pain, measured using a standard visual analogue scale. These results suggest that the CO2 laser can be used for the alleviation of pain in oral chronic GVHD.

We report the results of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in a 51-year-old woman with subsequent mycobacterial keratitis diagnosed by staining with acid-fast and fluorochrome methods, a technique known to have good sensitivity and specificity for mycobacteria. A rapid diagnosis was made without waiting for cultures, and treatment was instituted, including tapering of topical steroids and appropriate antibiotic therapy. The result was preservation of the LASIK flap and a favorable visual outcome at 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiodermatitis after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the breast is a common sequela of treatment and can be distressing for the patient. The skin is atrophic and shows prominent telangiectasia due to dilatation of a reduced or poorly supported skin vasculature. CASE REPORT: We present a case of 28-year-old female patient with condylomata gigantea (Buschke-Lowenstein tumor) in anal and perianal region with propagation on vulva and vagina. The local surgical excision and CO(2) laser treatment were performed. Histological examination showed presence of HPV type 11 without malignant potential.

PURPOSE: To report results applying diode laser photocoagulation to both the peripheral avascular retina and the ridge in stage 3+ threshold retinopathy of prematurity.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of 82 consecutive eyes in 43 preterm infants with threshold disease who had both the peripheral avascular retina and the ridge treated with diode laser photocoagulation. With a minimum follow-up of 3 months, these eyes were evaluated for intraoperative and postoperative complications and long-term anatomic results.

OBJECTIVE: Laser monotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the mobile tongue treated with CO2 laser was carried out on 18 cases between 1979 and 1997.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases recurred after laser surgery. As a subsequent therapy, radiotherapy was performed on two of them and laser surgery was repeated on the remaining one. No recurrences were found in the two patients who died from other diseases after laser surgery.
