Dressings and topical agents containing hyaluronic acid for chronic wound healing.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid is synthesised in plasma membranes and can be found in extracellular tissues. It has been suggested that the application of hyaluronic acid to chronic wounds may promote healing, and the mechanism may be due to its ability to maintain a moist wound environment which helps cell migration in the wound bed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of hyaluronic acid (and its derivatives) on the healing of chronic wounds. SEARCH METHODS: We used standard, extensive Cochrane search methods. The latest search date was February 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomise

Spinal cord stimulation plus conventional medical management versus conventional medical management alone for severe, non-surgical, refractory back pain: a randomized clinical trial followed by crossover.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain is a major contributor to long-term disability. Many patients lack a clearly identifiable source for their pain on physical examination or imaging or present with multiple pain generators. This subset of patients, who do not have surgical pathology, relies on conservative medical management (CMM) in the absence of effective and lasting treatment alternatives. For those who fail to respond to CMM, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) should be considered as an effective adjunctive therapy for improving pain, disability and health-related quality of life. METHODS: S

Designing assisted living technologies 'in the wild': preliminary experiences with cultural probe methodology.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in assisted living technologies to support independence at home. Such technologies should ideally be designed 'in the wild' i.e. taking account of how real people live in real homes and communities. The ATHENE (Assistive Technologies for Healthy Living in Elders: Needs Assessment by Ethnography) project seeks to illuminate the living needs of older people and facilitate the co-production with older people of technologies and services. This paper describes the development of a cultural probe tool produced as part of the ATHENE project and how it was used to

Transcatheter Repair for Patients with Tricuspid Regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Severe tricuspid regurgitation is a debilitating condition that is associated with substantial morbidity and often with poor quality of life. Decreasing tricuspid regurgitation may reduce symptoms and improve clinical outcomes in patients with this disease. METHODS: We conducted a prospective randomized trial of percutaneous tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) for severe tricuspid regurgitation. Patients with symptomatic severe tricuspid regurgitation were enrolled at 65 centers in the United States, Canada, and Europe and were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to re

Adjuvant Lipoic acid Injection in Sepsis treatment in China (ALIS study): protocol for a randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is a life-threatening immune disorder resulting from an dysregulated host response to infection. Adjuvant therapy is a valuable complement to sepsis treatment. Lipoic acid has shown potential in attenuating sepsis-induced immune dysfunction and organ injury in vivo and in vitro studies. However, clinical evidence of lipoic acid injection in sepsis treatment is lacking. Hence, we devised a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of lipoic acid injection in improving the prognosis of sepsis or septic shock patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 3

High Amplitude EEG Motor Potential during Repetitive Foot Movement: Possible Use and Challenges for Futuristic BCIs That Restore Mobility after Spinal Cord Injury.

Recent advances in neuroprostheses provide us with promising ideas of how to improve the quality of life in people suffering from impaired motor functioning of upper and lower limbs. Especially for patients after spinal cord injury (SCI), futuristic devices that are controlled by thought via brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) might be of tremendous help in managing daily tasks and restoring at least some mobility. However, there are certain problems arising when trying to implement BCI technology especially in such a heterogenous patient group. A plethora of processes occurring after the injurie

Cardiac lymphatics undergo distinct remodeling during hypertrophic and nonhypertrophic pregnancy.

Lymphatic vessels of the heart undergo dynamic remodeling in response to physiological and pathological cardiovascular events such as development, adult cardiac maintenance, and injury repair. During pregnancy, the cardiovascular system undergoes physiological changes to meet the increased demand for blood supply to the fetus. These extensive physiological changes make pregnancy and delivery a high-risk period in a woman's life. However, whether and how cardiac lymphatics change during pregnancy is largely undefined. Therefore, we used whole mount immunofluorescent labeling and quantitative mo

Epidemiological study about the mental state of patients after a pulmonary embolism or deep venous thrombosis event.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs frequently and represents a serious threat to patient health. However, its effects on mental health have not been studied sufficiently. The objective of this study was to investigate whether VTE alters the patients' mental state. We gathered questionnaire data on 100 patients (59 men, 41 women; age ranging from 24 to 85 years) concerning psychological symptoms and body image. Our results show that after a VTE, patients develop psychological symptoms, some of which persist for more than 2 years. Examples of those symptoms include depression, intrusion, and in

Analysis of heart rate variability and clinical implications.

In the last decades analysis of heart rate variability has emerged as a new useful tool for assessing the changes in autonomic tone that influences cardiovascular function. High variability of oscillations and the integrated physiologic activities of heart and cardiovascular system isassociated with physiologic functioning. Irregularity of the length of consecutive heart cycles, designated as heart rate variability, reflects the ability of cardiovascular system to adapt to different situations in everyday life. Reduction of these fluctuations of the heart periods has been shown to be associate

Targeting of cellular redox metabolism for mitigation of radiation injury.

Accidental exposure to ionizing radiation is a serious concern to human life. Studies on the mitigation of side effects following exposure to accidental radiation events are ongoing. Recent studies have shown that radiation can activate several signaling pathways, leading to changes in the metabolism of free radicals including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). Cellular and molecular mechanisms show that radiation can cause disruption of normal reduction/oxidation (redox) system. Mitochondria malfunction following exposure to radiation and mutations in mitochondria DNA (mtDNA

Transposable elements drive rapid phenotypic variation in Capsella rubella.

Rapid phenotypic changes in traits of adaptive significance are crucial for organisms to thrive in changing environments. How such phenotypic variation is achieved rapidly, despite limited genetic variation in species that experience a genetic bottleneck is unknown. Capsella rubella, an annual and inbreeding forb (Brassicaceae), is a great system for studying this basic question. Its distribution is wider than those of its congeneric species, despite an extreme genetic bottleneck event that severely diminished its genetic variation. Here, we demonstrate that transposable elements (TEs) are an

Inter-hemispheric frontal alpha synchronization of event-related potentials reflects memory-induced mental fatigue.

Mental fatigue is often associated with continuous brain activities in our daily life. It can diminish efficiency and increase errors. However, the related physiological features are still not clear and under exploration. The present study investigated changes of inter-hemispheric synchronization in event-related potentials (ERPs) due to mental fatigue during sustained memory processing. Twenty-six participants performed a continuous two-back memory task for around 2.5h. Prefrontal and frontal synchronies in the alpha frequency band (8-13Hz) were analyzed because of their close relationships w
