Long-term animal experiments with an intraventricular axial flow blood pump.

A miniature intraventricular axial flow blood pump (IVAP) is undergoing in vivo evaluation in calves. The IVAP system consists of a miniature (phi 13.9 mm) axial flow pump that resides within the left ventricular (LV) chamber and a brushless DC motor. The pump is fabricated from titanium alloy, and the pump weight is 170 g. It produces a flow rate of over 5 L/min against 100 mmHg pressure at 9,000 rpm with an 8 W total power consumption. The maximum total efficiency exceeds 17%. A purged lip seal system is used in prototype no. 8, and a newly developed "Cool-Seal" (a low temperature mechanical

A legal dispute resolution intervention for patients with substance use disorders: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent major public health concerns and are linked to enhanced risk of legal consequences. Unresolved legal issues may prevent individuals with SUD from completing treatment. Interventions aimed at improving SUD treatment outcomes are limited. Filling that gap, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) tests the ability of a technology-assisted intervention to increase SUD treatment completion rates and improve post-treatment health, economic, justice-system, and housing outcomes. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with a two-year administrative

Cost-utility analysis of the wearable cardioverter defibrillator in high-risk post-myocardial infarction patients in the Spanish healthcare system.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction after myocardial infarction (MI) remain at increased risk of sudden cardiac death during the early post-MI period, before implantable cardioverter defibrillator eligibility is confirmed. The wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) offers temporary protection during this vulnerable interval within post-MI care. We evaluated the cost-utility of WCD therapy plus guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) vs. GDMT alone from the Spanish healthcare system perspective. METHODS: A cost-utility analysis used a Markov state-transi

Advancing Vaccination Strategies for Older Adults: Insights of the Adult Immunization Board Meeting.

As Europe's population ages, optimizing vaccination strategies for older adults is an increasing public health priority. Vaccine-preventable infections pose significant risks, including increased morbidity and mortality, reduced quality of life, and substantial healthcare costs. Prevention, particularly adult vaccination, plays a vital role in mitigating these outcomes and supporting healthy ageing. While childhood immunization remains essential, a life-course approach including routine older adult vaccination is needed. Coverage among older adults across Europe remains suboptimal owing to fac

The impact of COVID-19 on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of end-of-life care and decision making amongst doctors in South African Emergency Departments.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented strain on emergency departments (EDs), altering approaches to end-of-life (EOL) care. This study assessed its impact on emergency clinicians' knowledge, decision making and attitudes towards EOL care in Johannesburg, South Africa. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among doctors working in five state-funded Johannesburg EDs between July 2024 and January 2025. A self-administered questionnaire assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices across three peripandemic time periods: pre-COVID-19, during COVID-19 and post-COVID-19. P

Axial load behaviour of concrete infilled and partially encased cold formed double sigma composite columns.

This study presents a comparative experimental investigation on the structural behaviour of concrete-infilled and partially encased cold-formed steel composite columns (CFSCC) incorporating Basalt Fibre Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (BFRSCC). Two built-up column configurations are fabricated using sigma sections: a face-to-face (closed) arrangement fully infilled with BFRSCC, and a back-to-back (open) arrangement partially encased with BFRSCC. Axial compression tests are performed to evaluate and compare the load-bearing capacity, axial shortening, ductility, and failure mechanisms of th

Bifidobacteria infantis and human milk oligosaccharides have independent and synergistic effects on immune response and amino acid metabolism in germ-free mouse models.

UNLABELLED: Early-life microbial colonization is essential for gut and immune development. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) support the growth of Bifidobacterium infantis (BI). Here, we studied the individual and combined effects of BI and HMOs on the immune and colon transcriptomes and on serum and cecal metabolome. Germ-free mice were randomly assigned to four groups (10-14/group: HMO, BI, BI + HMO, and control [no HMO or BI]). HMO and BI + HMO groups received 5 mg/day each of 2'-fucosyllactose, lacto-N-tetraose, and 3'-sialyllactose for 14 days. BI and BI + HMO received BI ATCC 15,697 (1

Validation study of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function-Version 3 for the Portuguese population.

BackgroundCancer-related cognitive impairment is a common and potentially debilitating symptom experienced by patients with non-central nervous system (CNS) cancers, with negative impact on their quality of life. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function-Version 3 (FACT-Cog-v3) is the most extensively used instrument specifically developed to evaluate cognitive complaints in adult cancer patients. Nevertheless, this self-report measure is not yet validated for the Portuguese population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the

"Just too busy living in the moment and surviving": barriers to accessing health care for structurally vulnerable populations at end-of-life.

BACKGROUND: Despite access to quality care at the end-of-life (EOL) being considered a human right, it is not equitable, with many facing significant barriers. Most research examines access to EOL care for homogenous 'normative' populations, and as a result, the experiences of those with differing social positioning remain unheard. For example, populations experiencing structural vulnerability, who are situated along the lower rungs of social hierarchies of power (e.g., poor, homeless) will have unique EOL care needs and face unique barriers when accessing care. However, little research examin

Neurosurgical complications of left ventricular assist devices in children.

OBJECT: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are continuous or pulsatile flow devices that could potentially be life-saving measures for patients with end-stage heart failure. These devices have clear advantages over extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and are often used in adults. They are only recently being commonly used in the pediatric age group. As the use of LVADs becomes more mainstream in children, it is important to determine the complication profile associated with these devices. Furthermore, with the increasing application of LVADs in children, pediatric neurosurgeons are

Endocrine treatment of prostate cancer.

Although androgen deprivation as a treatment for patients with prostate cancer was described more than 60 years ago its optimal use remains controversial. The widespread use of prostate-specific (PSA) assay has lead to earlier diagnosis and earlier detection of recurrent disease. This means that the systemic side effects of androgen deprivation and quality of life have become more important. Debates continue regarding the proper use and timing of endocrine therapy with orchiectomy, oestrogen agonists, gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, GnRH antagonists, and androgen antago
